CORe Digest

April 11th 2008

The CRe Digest

Some statistics for you!

Time flies. It seems like just yesterday that Chris Dellin and I were in the West Hall kitchen, Chris teaching me how to run the python scripts that make the CORe Digest happen, and me putting animated gifs of dancing dinosaurs in the Digest. Those were the days. Thirty one CORe Digests later, and here we are. It's just you, me, and a couple kilobytes. That's what it all breaks down to. In just two weeks, this Digest will be written by someone else, and the kilobytes will have an entirely new twist, an entirely new flavor, no carbs, and just one gram of fat.

Last year, Chris published a graph of CORe Digest release times. I updated it with his last few Digests and my own, and here is the cumulative results so far. I've attached the dataset, so if you guys want to play with it, it's there. Let's look at some interesting trends in the data.

Don't forget, E-Board elections are next Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the auditorium, followed by course fair. Also be sure to check out candidates' posted statements in the Dining Hall!

Also, as this is my 2nd to last Digest, I am trying to make it as excellent as possible. I just want to say, Babson's got iCals like you wouldn't even believe. Look how many events are going on over there.

Extended Advising Family Lunches
Dine with your extended family!
Based on recommendations from the Advising Advisory Board (AAB), which were developed in part from the student and faculty advising survey results, I am organizing lunches for extended advising families.  Students will receive individual invitations in their campus mailboxes; most lunches will occur in the Crescent Room.  Special desserts will be provided.  The first lunch occurred on Thursday, April 3rd with the advisees of Oscar, Zhenya, and Brian.  The next scheduled lunches are April 14th with Allen, John G., and Caitrin and April 15th with Debbie, Rebecca, Rob, Matt, and Chris M.  Be on the lookout for your invitation; I'm still waiting on a confirmation from some faculty members.  I'll do my best to fit in all extended families this semester!  Enjoy.

Interesting SLEEP information
Check out these results!
The National Sleep Foundation (www.sleepfoundation.org) just released a newsletter containing some recent sleep research results.  Check out what was learned:

Canadian researchers focused on 276 adults who participated in the Quebec Family Study over the course of six years and found that:

--Short sleepers (5-6 hours per night) were 35 percent more likely than average sleepers (7-8 hours per night) to gain 11 pounds.
--Long sleepers (9-10 hours per night) were 25 percent more likely than average sleepers to gain 11 pounds.
--Compared with average sleepers, short and long sleepers showed a greater increase in their percentage of body fat, and were more likely to develop diabetes.

A team of German researchers conducted a study of about 11 kids with a mean age of about 12 years, who performed two bicycle exercise sessions, one of medium intensity and the other of high intensity, on different days.  The study found that:

--High intensity exercise was associated with shorter sleep latency, more deep sleep and greater sleep efficiency.

What does all of this mean for you?  Overall good health requires optimal sleep, a balanced diet, and regular exercise.  While this is not new advice, scientific studies continue to support these tips.  For more information, ask me.  R2s also have sleep information.
OSL Contest Winner
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Alex Niswander, who won the Boston Red Sox hat in the OSL contest that was launched at the Red Sox Opening Day party on Monday, and which continued through today at noon.  Alex, along with Adam Kenvarg and Joanne Pratt, correctly guessed that 2205 is the combined age of the OSL staff in dog years.  (Don't ask us our individual ages to figure out how we got that number; trust us!).  Thanks to everyone who participated!
Student Reimbursements
Reimbursements
The 3rd quarter of our fiscal year has just ended.  Before we know it, commencement and the end of the year will be here.  In order to avoid the last minute rush, please take a moment to gather your receipts for reimbursements and bring them to  the CORe VP of Finance or the appropriate staff member for approval.  A few things to remember:
  • All receipts should be original.
  • If you are being reimbursed for a meal, please list all attendees.
  • E-mail receipts should include proof of payment (a line that shows the balance was paid by credit card).
Boston Marathon Spectators
Will you be there on Monday the 21st?
Are you planning on cheering on the runners at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 21st?  The course begins in Hopkinton, then passes through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Chestnut Hill, and into Boston, where it finishes near the Public Library on Boylston St.  The closest part of the course to Olin is in Wellesley, approximately 1.5 miles away.  If you are planning on being at the marathon, please let me know.  Thanks!
Monte Carlo Night
This Friday (read: tomorrow) is the Monte Carlo Night sponsored by SAC!  There will be food, dancing, and various types of poker available for students to enjoy.  Furthermore, to "up the ante", there are prizes that students can win by exchanging money won through playing games for raffle tickets.  These prizes include gift certificates to a myriad of places such as Anna's, Barnes & Noble, The Cheesecake Factory, and Godiva, as well as two 8G iPod Nanos!  The tables open at 9 pm tomorrow evening in the dining hall, and will remain open until 1 am.  Prizes will be called all night, with several prizes (including the iPods) saved for the end just after the tables close.  Please email sac@olin.edu with any questions, and we hope to see everyone there!
OCO Spring Concert!
Come support the Olin Conductorless Orchestra as we celebrate a year of growth and musicianship. The OCO will be holding its spring concert on April 18 at 4pm in the mezzanine of Milas Hall. Reception to follow!
SigSys Tutor Needed
Help a fellow student!
I'm looking to hire someone to tutor one or two students in SigSys.  You will be paid by the hour, and your schedule would be flexible depending on the schedules of you and the student you are tutoring.  If you would like more information, or would like to express interest, please contact me as soon as possible.  Thanks!
Two Summer Anthropology Research Assistants Sought
I am looking to hire two Olin students as summer Research Assistants (10 hours/week). The best candidates will have these qualifications: interest in learning about qualitative social science research; reliable, independent, and able to work closely with others! My research is about a small Needham factory that produces stainless steel needles and tubing. Its average employee age is approximately 75 years (the oldest worker is 96)! I am looking for students to work in a team of three with me to code and analyze interview transcripts and prepare a research publication. No experience needed--will train! May also involve: transcribing interviews, attending interviews, reading relevant scholarship, writing grant proposals. Please contact me if interested.
Babson Events

"Colored Girls"

Location: Sorenson Theater at Babson College

for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf was first staged in 1974 in a woman's bar, and two years later became nationally known when it was produced on Broadway at the Booth Theatre.
It is a choreopoem - a work written in poetic form but performed by an ensemble onstage - written by Ntozake Shange. It is a blend of narrative, poetry, and dancing performed by seven women and it explores themes of sexism, racism, and poverty.
It is performed very simply, without props and with minimal scenery. It ranges from darkly funny, including a scene where the seven women exchange apologies received from their boyfriends and husbands, to heartbreaking, with a narrative in which a woman describes the killing of her children by their father.
The cast is simple: Lady in Brown, Lady in Yellow, Lady in Purple, Lady in Red, Lady in Green, Lady in Blue, and Lady in Orange. The characters are all nameless to emphasize the idea that universal experience is being explored - while the stories themselves are highly individual, the intent of the piece is to draw the viewer's attention to the spectrum (hence the rainbow motif) of experiences that befall black women.
Despite the darkness of the material explored, the tone of the piece is one of positivity, growth, self-sufficiency, and beauty amidst sadness. for colored girls is very much accessible to anyone, no matter their own life - the writing and the stories are accessible no matter the experiences of the viewer.
It is inspirational and moving, and its message may be summed up in its last line: "i found god in myself & i loved her fiercely."
