CORe Digest

February 28th 2008

The CRe Digest

Shout out to all the FWOPers!

In honor of everyone working on producing the FWOP show that is showing this Friday and Saturday (and next Friday and Saturday), this episode of the Digest is themed after Red Bull [disclaimer: Red Bull has not compensated me in any way for theming this Digest Red Bull [disclaimer: They have, in the past, given me free Red Bull from their Red Bull promotional Beetle [disclaimer: photo here [disclaimer: it was sugar free]]]].

Red Bull sale is prohibited in some countries. It has received some notoriety due to urban legends that it was a Vietnam War-era drug manufactured by the American government.[citation needed]. The original Red Bull drink was developed in Thailand. [Thai] Truck drivers used to drink it to stay awake during the long late night drive. The UK football legend Paul Gascoigne (AKA 'Gazza) has become the latest victim of caffine related 'Red bull addiction'. [[Wikipedia]]

I have assembled the following graph comparing caffeine contents of several popular beverages. Notice that coffee basically dominates.

But generally, the best way to stay awake is by sleeping. That sounds ironic, but I have done some empirical experiments, and the preliminary results are encouraging. I will get back to you once my data set is more complete (that means after more naps! Whoooo!).

Anything can happen in the woods…

Ever wanted to see a leather jacket covered in fur?  Do you miss seeing girls dressed as cows (SAllen hasn't worn her costume in a while…)?  Or how about birds pecking evil stepsisters' eyes out?

Then I suggest you come see "Into the Woods" - FWOP's spring musical.  Written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, directed by Jonathan Cass, with music direction by Paul Mandel.

National Sleep Awareness Week is March 3rd through March 9th
Educate yourself about sleep issues!
In recognition of National Sleep Awareness Week, which starts on Monday, March 3rd, there will be a number of materials available around campus to educate the community about sleep facts, disorders, tips, etc.  Materials will be located in several locations, including: Dining Hall tables, campus bulletin boards, and the first floor of the Campus Center.  In addition, R2s have sleep awareness information.  Here's a couple of facts to get things going:  Did you know that since the invention of the electric light bulb in 1913, Americans average 1.5 hours less sleep per day?  Or that warm milk can help people sleep because it contains tryptophan?  Look for much more next week!
Babson Business Edge
3 Week Summer Program
Spread the word about Babson Business Edge, a three-week summer program for liberal arts, sciences, and engineering students.  The program introduces students to fundamental business concepts, combining many of the best features of Babson’s integrated, hands-on curriculum delivered in an entrepreneurial context.  Students work in teams to generate ideas and present business plans, analyze and visit a local company, and participate in a business simulation.  During the program students receive coaching on leadership styles, presentation skills, and how to leverage their liberal arts degrees for success in business.

The program has had two very successful years and are excited about our third run of Business Edge, May 27 – June 13, 2008.  This year the faculty director for the program is our new Chief Diversity Officer, Professor Elizabeth Thornton.  Elizabeth has taught the Business Edge entrepreneurship stream since the program’s inception.

Tom Kolditz will present on March 5 starting at 6:00 pm
When: Wednesday, March 5 at 6:00 pm
Where: Olin College Auditorium in Milas Hall
Who: Tom Kolditz, Ph.D., D., Professor and Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York
What: Topic – “Leading as if your Life Depended on It”

Abstract: Most approaches to crisis leadership focus on ordinary people who are forced to cope with extraordinary circumstances. But there are different lessons to be learned about crisis leadership through research with crisis professionals, like climbing guides, SWAT team chiefs, soldiers, and extreme sport coaches. What do people look for in leaders when their business risk or personal risk is so extreme that there may be no second chances? What are the moral obligations of leaders who, along with others, face extreme risk or crisis?
