The CRe Digest

Celebrating Co-Curriculars!

Well, we're all back to Olin and just settling into a new semester of classes and activities. Is your calendar not full enough (still not quite as full as that person on the therapy list?)? Don't worry, spread things out and make it harder for group members to schedule you with some awesome co-curriculars!

If you don't recognize this week's "O" image, that's because it is Wagner College's co-curricular logo. Guess when Wagner College launched their co-curricular program? 2003. Guess what year Olin started theirs? At least 2003, according to this paper by Jon Stolk and Dr. Spence-Adams. Coincidence? Probably.

Here are some of the excellent co-curriculars you could take and why they are awesome:

I really like Olin's co-curriculars because they provide an opportunity to do something fun and not worry about grades, but still have the structure to push me through the project. Having a bunch of other people working with you certainly makes things easier. I hope that at Expo we get to see some of the fruits of these co-curriculars, preferrably in epic-showdown format.

Also, don't forget to get your club/group/class/co-curricular/fun events on the CORe Calendar by meeting requesting "CORe"!

Honor Board Weekly Poll
Informal report features

As always, please feel free to give us feedback at any time by emailing the Honor Board.

This Week's Poll:

The Honor Board received feedback that an informal alternative to normal HB cases would be of some interest. Which of these possible features of such a system would be most important to you?
It would have a less threatening connotation
It would have less severe sanctions
It would not be confidential
It would involve the entire board, not just a small panel

Last Week's Results:

Should faculty and staff be able to vote for Honor Board members since they have to work closely with Board members on submitted violations?
Yes 29 % / 39 Votes
Maybe 24 % / 33 Votes
No 47 % / 64 Votes
Total Votes: 136

Talk to your friends and decide who you might want to work with.  If you have an odd-sized group or just need extra room, you can buy more space at the parent ad rate.

Once you decide who is in your group (but no later than Friday, February 1), send an email to yearbook@olin.edu with the list.  Please CC the other members of the group.

Of course, you're welcome to work alone and make a 1/6 page snapshot.  If you don't email us by Friday, we'll assume that this is what you're doing.

Also, don't forget to buy your 2007-2008 yearbook! See last week's Digest for ways to get another order form.

Student Handbook Amendments: Residence Hall Policies
With input from the Residence Life Committee of CORe, the following additions have been made to residence hall policies.  They take effect immediately and will appear in the next edition of the Student Handbook.

New Section on Used Furniture:  In an effort to avoid the health and financial issues associated with a bedbug or other pest infestation, the College prohibits furniture from unaccountable places such as town dumps and second-hand shops.  New furniture and furniture of confirmed quality (e.g., from family or close friends) is acceptable.  Students are expected to comply with this ban under the College's core values and Honor Code.  In addition, the often significant costs associated with addressing any such infestation will be billed to the student(s) responsible for bringing that piece of furniture into the residence halls.

NOTE:  Used furniture currently in the residence halls may remain.  Once it leaves the residence halls, it should not return.

Amended Section on Right of Entry (see page 93 of Student Handbook 2007-08) -- new wording underlined:  The College reserves the right to inspect rooms and perform maintenance at reasonable times, and to enter rooms at any time in case of emergency, in response to a complaint of a disturbance, or when there is reason to believe that a violation of College policy is occurring within the room.  E-mail notice will be provided to students at least 24-hours in advance of non-emergency inspections.  Residents are not permitted to change or add private locks or security devices to their rooms or to any part of the building.  College personnel are not to enter a room without knocking and, if asked, should identify themselves and their reason(s) for entering the room.

Questions may be addressed to Rod Crafts.
Super Tuesday Study Break
PPR is hosting a Super Tuesday Study in the West Hall First Floor Lounge Break from 8-11. There will be food, CNN on an HD projector, and, most importantly, 24 states’ Democratic and Republican primaries. Be there!
Passionate Pursuits Procedures
The approval process for Passionate Pursuits has two steps -- non-degree credit approval and funding approval.  Credit approval request forms are available on the StAR Center website.  Once signatures are obtained from a faculty sponsor and your adviser, the form goes to Rod Crafts in the Office of Student Life.  Rod circulates this form to the other members of the Passionate Pursuits Board executive committee for review.  Assuming non-degree credit is approved, Rod notifies the applicant and attaches the funding request form.  This completed form goes to Rod who circulates it to the full Passionate Pursuits Board (four students and two faculty members) for consideration.  The maximum allocation is $200.  Receipts are required for reimbursement.  Additional information is available on pages 50-52 of the Student Handbook 2007-08.  Questions may be sent to Rod Crafts.
Come to Jujitsu Classes!
Every Monday and Wednesday, 6:30-8:00 pm in Webster Center
Learn Jukido Jujitsu!  The official first classes for new students are Jan 28 & 30, and Feb 4 & 6 (next Monday and Wednesday).  No martial arts experience is necessary. If you can't make the classes next week, feel free to show up anytime during the semester.

Classes take place in the Chandor Dance Studio in Webster Center (Babson's gym) every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-8:00.  The class is taught by Sensei Dean Ierardi (3rd dan in Kokondo Karate, 2nd dan in Jukido Jujitsu) and Sensei Mike Schultz (2nd dan Kokondo Karate, 2nd dan Jukido Jujitsu).

For the first week of February, Annie will be leaving from the first floor lounge of West Hall at 6:00 to walk over with any students who aren't sure where the gym is.
Passover Partnership
Hillel Council of New England, whose staff (Elissa Klein) works with Hillel students at Olin and Babson colleges is seeking Jewish families from the college community to host students for the First and/or Second Seder during this year’s Passover observance, April 19th and 20th.

Early planning has begun to provide a home based, familial seder experience for those students who will be unable to be with their own families during this important holiday period.  Opening our homes to students during Passover strengthens and enhances the relationships between Jewish students, faculty and staff.

If you are interested and able to host an Olin or Babson Hillel student, or two, for the First and/or Second seder, please contact Kathe Lewis, klewis@wellesley.edu for more information.   We will need an email address and/or phone number in order to contact you.  Thank you.
Sleep More Soundly
Check out these tips!
According to the December 2007 issue of Prevention magazine, here are three ways you can sleep more deeply.  Check them out and try one!

Slip on Some Socks.  The instant warm-up widens blood vessels in your feet, allowing your body to transfer heat from its core to the extremities, cooling you slightly, which induces sleep, says Phyllis Zee, PhD, director of sleep disorders at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.

Stay on Schedule.  People who follow regular daily routines--bedtimes and wake-up times, work hours and meals--report fewer sleep problems than those with more unpredictable lives, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Recurring time cues synchronize your body rhythms and sleep-wake cycles, says Lawrence Epstein, MD.

Go Dark.  Any light signals the brain to wake up, but "blue light" from your cell phone and your clock's digital display are the worst offenders.  for a sound sleep, turn your clock around and banish lighted devices from the bedroom.

Volunteer at the Boston Marathon
Want to be a part of the world’s oldest annual marathon?  This Patriot’s Day (Monday, April 21 – you don’t have classes), SERV will be taking a group to volunteer along the racecourse.  Hopefully we’ll be working at a water station, or we could be at the finish line doing security and returning runners’ bags. Contact Alex Jones for  more info and for instructions on how to sign up online for Olin’s volunteer team.
Do You Like to Bake?
Volunteer your time for a worthy cause!
Come help me bake cookies to sell in a Valentine bake sale to raise funds for the American Liver Foundation.  I am raising money for the Foundation as a Boston Marathon runner.  The week of February 11th I will be conducting a cookie sale, and I need help with some of the preparation (especially baking!  I'm not very handy in the kitchen…).  If you can't bake or don't like to, you can help me bag up the cookies and/or help me sell in the dining hall that week.  Or at the very least…you can buy a cookie (or two or three!).  Please contact me with any questions.  Thanks so much!
