The CRe Digest

House Returns Next Tuesday!

Welcome back to school everyone! I have been informed by Sarah Zimmermann (two N's) that House MD starts on Tuesday. If you enjoy watching it, you may enjoy tuning in. Also, if you're not sure when to watch for House, you can read about it in the new newspapers in the Dining Hall in the mornings. They'll be right next to the cash register station, courtesy of PPR!

Hopefully everyone is off to a good start of classes! Here are some pearls of wisdom that I learned today:

I promise next week's Digest will be more entertaining.!

SAC Announcements and a Survey
SAC has a few things to announce, some old, some not:

First, this week is the final chance to apply to SAC.  If you're interested, you can e-mail an application to sac@olin.edu, or even show up to the meeting on Monday at 7pm in the Crescent Room if you're too busy beforehand.  SAC plans events for the student body, and if you are interested in a certain event or type of event, the best way to make sure it happens is to be on SAC.

Second, SAC recently announced its new page on Facebook.  For all future events, if you are interested in receiving event invitations via Facebook, please become a fan, as invitations will be sent solely to fans of the page.  SAC will still send out emails to the entire student body announcing events if you prefer this method; this is simply another means of notification or reminder.

Finally, please take a survey regarding events this semester here.  If the first survey fills up, a second one is available here.  This survey will help us gauge students' interest in different types of events, with the intention of hosting events that you are most excited about.

Thank you,
SAC

Support the American Liver Foundation (ALF)!
Help me as I run for Marlene Veldwisch and ALF!
Many of you know that I ran the Boston Marathon in April of 2007. My only goal was to finish and have fun.  I successfully completed that goal and have decided to run the Boston Marathon again in April of 2008 but am raising funds this time for a very important cause: liver disease.  If you know Tiana Veldwisch, then you are touched by liver disease (and who doesn't know and love Tiana?!).  Some of you know that Tiana's mom Marlene was diagnosed with hepatitis C.  In fact, some Olin community members supported Marlene and Tiana by joining their team, the Hepa Titans, at the Liver Foundation walk in September of this year.  I will be running specifically for Marlene but the money goes to the entire Liver Foundation.  Please help continue this support by contributing to my efforts to raise funds for the American Liver Foundation.  There are many ways you can help.  You can donate money via this web site: http://www.active.com/donate/liverteam08/alfABlack or by writing a check to the American Liver Foundation and give that to me.  Financial donations are not due until May of 2008, but money submitted prior to the marathon on April 21st of 2008 are especially appreciated.  Or if you don't have money to spare, you can help by supporting our fundraising efforts.  We'll be doing a Valentine cookie sale in February so if you have baking talent (or at least interest!) then we could use your help.  If you are interested in helping to fundraise at all, just contact me and we'll put you to good use.

I'll send out a reminder about everything after the holidays, but I wanted to put this on everyone's radar now.  Thank you for reading this!  (Attached is a PDF of the Fall 2007 ALF newsletter which contains a front-page article about Marlene…and a picture of the Hepa Titans!  See some Olin students in this picture!)

He has written on environmental issues for The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Rolling Stone, and Outside. Recently, he has launched a campaign, Step It Up, to mobilize citizens to demand 80% cuts in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Peddocks Island Cleanup and Video
Hello Olin Community,

I am planning to implement a topical debris cleanup on the shoreline of Peddocks Island located between Hull and Quincy on June 7, 2008. If any faculty or students are interested in volunteering for this event please let me know.
