CORe Digest

December 14th 2007

The CRe Digest

A Digest for the Rest of Us!

Continuing the Digest's theme of "Winter Holidays," this week we present to you: Festivus! Festivus is a holiday that occurs near Christmas (on Decemer 23th), just like this issue of the Digest occurs near when it was supposed to.

You can visit the Wikipedia article about Festivus to learn more. Festivus is a, "non-denominational holiday to be celebrated by those frustrated or jaded with the commercialism and pressure surrounding the Christmas/ Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa season." It is a holiday celebrated in several parts: The Festivus Pole, the Festivus Dinner, the Airing of Grievances, and the Feats of Strength. For even more information, you can purchase the book about Festivus.

It's too late for the R2's secret santa events, but here are a few more options you could consider for your family on Festivus:

Next week is the last holiday themed Digest, so get your submissions in for Holidays!

Mail Services During Winter Break

To The College Community:

Due to the college being closed Monday, 12/24 through Tuesday, 1/1/08, there will be no internal mail service or package delivery on those days.

Regular service will be provided through the end of the day on Friday, 12/21 and resume on Tuesday, 1/2/08.

Mail will be picked up from the Needham post office on the mornings of 12/26,  12/28 and 12/31. If you need access to the mail on those days, please contact Scott Slaboden, prior to Wednesday, 12/19. There will be no UPS/FedEx/DHL-Airborne deliveries to the college during this time.

Students studying away for the spring semester, that want their mail forwarded, need to provide Ed Crawford with preprinted address labels. Mail forwarding will begin 1/2/08 and follow USPS standard rules.

Regular incoming student mail will be held at Olin and available in your mailbox when you return in late January.

Thank you and best wishes to you during the holiday season from Mail Services.

Design Build Brainstorming
Remember how awesome design-build was at your CW?  Well, Olin students made that happen.  By the way, you’re now an Olin student, and design build is coming up in a few months.  However, unlike design build, failure is not an option when planning for design build*.  So we’re starting the ball rolling now.  If you’re interested in design build – even if you think you don’t have time for it – please come to the initial design build brainstorming/organizing session during brunch on Saturday (Mezzanine, 11-12.30, officially, but drop in anytime).  I’ll be giving a short description  of how the design build process goes, and then we will get to brainstorming for this year.  Hope to see you there.

Your Friendly Design Build Coordinator,
G.Sass

Don't forget to submit senior comments!
Participate in an endsheet tradition!
Every year that we’ve had seniors, the yearbook’s endsheets have been covered with photos of our delightful graduates-to-be, along with compliments and quotes and such about them. This year, the tradition continues. The Yearbook is looking for nice comments or super-short stories about the seniors. As always, we collect these from the student body. The eminent Thomas Michon has created a website for people to log in and leave comments. Go to http://yearbook.olin.edu/seniors/ and help us out!  Just think: Next year or a couple years from now it'll be your turn to receive compliments!

We still need a lot more comments, so log in and write some nice things about your classmates!

Notes:
-- When you log in and get 5 names, hitting refresh will re-randomize the names.
-- Comments are entirely anonymous.
-- Log in as many times as you want!

Winter Break IT Prep
All;

We realize that this is a particularly busy time of year for everyone as the semester winds to a close and you prepare for the holidays and your winter break.  I would like to ask everyone to take a moment to review some important reminders and notices which have been posted on the IT web site's announcement section, and whose links I've pasted below.

In addition to the links below, it's important to verify that your computer is up to date with Microsoft updates and patches.  Your system should be configured to automatically apply Microsoft updates not just Windows updates.  The difference is that Microsoft updates will also apply patches and updates for other Microsoft applications such as Office and not just the operating system.  The simplest method to determine this is to open Internet Explorer, from the drop down menus, select Tools, Microsoft Update.  Select the express option and have your system scanned for necessary patches.  If it indicates you're running Windows updates, go ahead and select the option to upgrade to Microsoft updates and continue with the patching process until completed.

Hardware Repairs:
If your system requires hardware repairs, we recommend you bring it to us ASAP to ensure that we can order parts and repair it before next Friday the 21st.  If you have a loaner system while you're waiting for a repair, please return it to us and pickup your system ASAP once you've been notified of its completion.

Loaner equipment:
All loaner equipment must be returned to the IT Help Desk before you leave for winter break unless specific arrangements have been with us to keep the equipment during break.  PLEASE do not take anything with you or leave it in your dorm room or elsewhere.

Symantec Upgrade information:

VPN reminder:

System naming and domain reminder:

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the details in this notice, please don't hesitate to contact the IT Help Desk via email at help.desk@olin.edu or by phone at 781-292-2430.  All of us within the IT Department would like to wish you and yours a safe and enjoyable holiday season.  Have a great break!

Regards,
Manny

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), Korea
Deadline: January 2, 2008
Samsung is interested in Olin students for its research internship in Korea next summer. 30 students will be brought in from schools all over the world to work with Samsung research engineers for 8 weeks on a project. Samsung will provide paid housing, round trip airfare, a daily meal allowance and a small salary.  Normally, this program is only for graduate students, but they said they're very interested in having some of our Olin undergrads there as well!

The following is the process that Samsung has asked Olin Students to follow:

  • Prepare a cover letter and resume and send them to Sally Phelps by Jan 2nd.
  • Let me know if you're interested in pursuing this opportunity ASAP.  I'll watch for your resume and be sure to include it with the batch.
  • I will then send the resumes and cover letters directly to Samsung for review.
  • Final candidates may then be asked to fill out the on line application on the Samsung site, which will be available between Jan 15 - March 15, 2008.
  • Learn more about Samsung's SAIT at: http://www.sait.samsung.co.kr/eng/main.jsp
