The CRe Digest

Year of the Turkey!

Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays of the year. From the trace-your-hand-on-construction-paper turkeys of elementary school, to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, to sitting around and watching football games, it really doesn't get much better. Factor in that you get an excuse to eat way too much, and you wind up with something that really can't be rivaled.

As usual, I direct you to the Uncyclopedia page for Thanksgiving. It's full of such gems as "The first officially recognized Thanksgiving day occurred in 1777, when George Washington and his rock band 'The Pilgrims' won independence from Britain in a 'battle of the bands' contest. I highly recommend giving it a browse.

Safe travels to everyone traveling back home this weekend. Hopefully you don't run into much traffic or delays at the gate. Have fun with friends and family at home, or enjoy your time without new work at Olin!

Honor Board Weekly Poll
Honor Code and Alumni

As always, please feel free to give us feedback at any time by emailing the Honor Board.

This Week's Poll:

What should the Honor Board do if an alumnus is reported?
Drop it. Alumni are beyond the scope of the Honor Code.
It depends. Alumni should be accountable for egregious violations.
Treat it normally. Alumni signed the code, so they should be held to it.

Last Week's Results:

I love the Honor Board - 19 % / 12 Votes
The Honor Board is nice - 36 % / 23 Votes

Commencement '08 Speaker: James J. Duderstadt
Upon recommendation of the Commencement Steering Committee and with the consent of the Board of Trustees, President Richard K. Miller invited Dr. James J. Duderstadt of the University of Michigan to deliver the charge to the 2008 graduates.  Dr. Duderstadt is President Emeritus and University Professor of Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, an international leader in engineering education, and a member of the Olin College President's Council.  A recipient of the National Medal of Technology, former Chair of the National Science Board, and a member of US Education Secretary Spellings' Commission on the Future of Higher Education, he has served on numerous other national boards and has received many awards. A graduate of Yale and Caltech, his teaching and research activities include nuclear science and engineering, applied physics, computer simulation, science policy, and higher education.   At the University of Michigan, he currently directs the program on Science, Technology and Public Policy in the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the Michigan Energy Research Council, and the Millennium Project.  The Steering Committee offers special thanks to the 23 members of the Olin community for their suggestions of 30 potential speakers.

Miss the first several flu shot clinics at Babson?  You still have two more chances!  All Olin students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend the free flu shot clinic on Friday, November 16th between 10:00am and 11:30am at the Health Services office at Babson.  Clinic ends promptly at 11:30am.  Can't make it on Friday?  One more clinic will be offered after Thanksgiving; stay tuned for more information!
Sign up for your Yearbook snapshot!
It's free!
The deadline is almost here to sign up for your yearbook snapshot! Make sure you sign up before you leave for Thanksgiving!

What is a snapshot?
Each year, the yearbook includes a section of "student snapshots." A snapshot is 1/6 of a page for which each student creates content. In addition, students can collaborate in groups of size n, where n is a multiple of 2 or is a multiple of 3. To reserve your snapshot space, you must opt in to creating a snapshot. (If you want to work in a group, everyone in the group must opt in.) To see some examples, visit http://yearbook.olin.edu/snapshotgallery.htm.

How do I get one?
There is a list in the Mailing Room for you to opt in. You must initial next to your name to reserve your snapshot space. Do this by this Friday, November 16.

I have a question!
Please email Nikolaus Wittenstein. More details will be coming soon about submission deadlines and technical specifications for the snapshots.
Students, We Need Your Feedback!
Please complete the advising survey
The Advising Advisory Board is currently working on developing suggestions to improve the advising system at Olin.  In April of this year, we submitted a survey to faculty about advising.  Now, it's your turn!  Please click the link below to take our survey, which should take you no more than 10 minutes (there are only 7 questions).  If you can, please complete the survey before Thanksgiving break.  The survey will close on Monday, November 19th at Noon.

Once the survey data is collected, we will be distributing the results to the campus community.  We will also distribute the results from the faculty survey.  Following that, we will host a discussion for faculty and students to talk about the survey results as well as general advising topics.  More information on this opportunity will be posted after the Thanksgiving break, but for now I can tell you that it will be on Friday, November 30th from Noon until 1pm in AC 109 (iCal attached).

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Members of the Advising Advisory Board are: Alison Black, Linda Canavan, Jayesh Gorasia '11, Hari Iyer '11, Raymond Yim and Zhenya Zastavker (on leave).

Free Chair Massages
Take a study break!
Students--mark your calendars!  Come on over to the dining area of the Crescent Room between 7pm and 9pm on Monday or Tuesday night, December 3rd or 4th for a FREE five-minute chair massage.  The massages will be on a first-come, first-served basis, but a sign-up sheet will be located on site so that you can sign up for a time and come back later.  Look for posters around campus after Thanksgiving break.  Brought to you by your friends in OSL.

Science on Screen at Coolidge Corner Theatre
See David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth
Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre continues Monday, November 26 at 7:00 p.m. with the science fiction classic The Man Who Fell to Earth and an introduction by cultural anthropologist Robert Weller.

The Man Who Fell to Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roegs visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. More than just trippy sci-fi, Roeg's film is highly provocative allegory which raises myriad issues about the outsider's experience in modern Western culture. Joining us before the film to discuss some of these issues in-depth is cultural anthropologist Robert P. Weller, professor and chair of the anthropology department at Boston University. Mr. Weller is a member of the BU's Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs and the author of numerous books and papers. His most recent book is Discovering Nature: Globalization and Environmental Culture in China and Taiwan.
Tickets are available in advance at the box office or online at www.coolidge.org/science, or can be purchased the evening of the event. All Science on Screen programs are $7.75 for students and Museum of Science members, and $9.75 regular admission. Events are free for Coolidge Corner Theatre members.
For more information, call 617/734-2500 or visit www.coolidge.org/science.
Olin Christian Fellowship Missions Fundraising
Yardwork? Babysitting? Office Work? We’ve got you covered.
This January, approximately 20 Olin students will be traveling to Juarez, Mexico on the Olin Christian Fellowship Mission Trip.  On of the most prominent problems in Juarez is the lack of decent and affordable housing.  We will be working with Casas por Cristo to provide housing for a family in need.  We need your help.

Hire a group of college students to come to your house or office and help out with your yard work, babysitting, house repairs, filing, or other needs.  All money raised will go toward building supplies, ground travel, housing, and covering the costs of our volunteer staff for our upcoming mission trip to Juarez.
