CORe Digest

November 8th 2007

The CRe Digest

Year of the Cow!

It's the infamous day- the day that truly kicks off the year of the cow. Today, my friends, is the SERV auction. So why is it the year of the cow? How does this relate to the SERV auction? (Also, why is SERV writing the digest? We have cow-jacked it! Moo! Moohaha!)

This year, the proceeds from the SERV auction are going to go to two different things.

  1. Heifer International

Heifer International is a charity that provides livestock to sustenance farmers, and then in turn, when the livestock reproduces, the farmers give it back to heifer for redistribution. It's a very exciting charity and we're hoping to work with them all year. At some point we will organize a field trip to a nearby Heifer farm to learn more!

  2. SERV Big-Cool-Stuff Fund

This year SERV is going to be keeping half of the money from the SERV auction. This money isn't going to go towards everyday SERV operating. Instead, it's going to go towards large scale projects that individuals are passionate about and will make a difference. Look for more details on the fund as the year goes on.

So how can you support these two causes? Moo!! Go to the silent auction today ending at 12:15pm, and the live auction starting at noon and going until 1pm. Bid on items you like, and help support Olin students doing large scale service projects, as well as helping to create sustainable food sources.

Want to get involved with farming right now? Come to the WH1 lounge at 3pm and SERV will whisk you away to the Natick Community Organic farm. While not quite Heifer, it's still a farm, and still good!

Looking for highlights and auction tips? Jeff Moore promised an epic limerick (one verse per $1 donated) and it's already at whatever the bid is, plus an extra $20 Brad added on. Man Hall has once again donated Man hours, and more importantly, seat filling! Never fear that your event will be ill-attended again. So, take today and splurge a little bit, while still feeling good about yourself! There are many fabulous meals, items, and services to be had. Go out of your way to meet someone you don't know! Bid on lots of items...

So thanks for listening, and stay tuned for your regular-CORe-programming next week.

The Presidential Lecture Series presents Dr. Claire Gaudiani
Dr. Claire Gaudiani will speak Wednesday, November 14, at 11 am in the Olin Center Auditorium as part of the Presidential Lecture Series.

Dr. Gaudiani is an expert on the history and economics of American philanthropy. She is clinical professor at New York University, where she directs the graduate program in philanthropic studies.  She recently wrote The Greater Good (Henry Holt/New York Times Books).  This widely-cited book argues that Americans are not generous because we are rich, but rich because we are generous.

Dr. Gaudiani served for 13 years as President of Connecticut College. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a director of The Henry Luce Foundation, MBIA Inc. and The National Council for Economic Education. She is a trustee of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and holds a PhD in French literature from Indiana University.

Build a house in Mexico with OCF over winter break
This year’s Olin Christian Fellowship mission trip will be held in Juarez, Mexico where we will build a house with Casas por Cristo (http://www.casasporcristo.org/).   The trip is open all students and we encourage anyone who is not a member of OCF to attend.  A meeting to discuss the trip will be held every Thursday at 6pm in the dining hall balcony (iCal attached).  Please email me ASAP if you are interested in attending so that I can start to gauge numbers.

Tentative Date of trip: January 6-12, 2008 (including travel)

Where: Juarez, Mexico (fly through and spend one night in El Paso, TX)

Cost: We hope to fundraise a majority of the cost.  Without any fundraising the trip will be approximately $300 plus airfare per person.  Last year we got the cost down to about half of the airfare per person.  It all depends on numbers.

Further description: In Juarez, one of the most prominent problems is the lack of decent and affordable housing with tens of thousands of families in need of homes. Families who come to Juarez first build their homes by using heavy cardboard, scrap lumber, and other discarded material. Over a period of two to three years, families may be able to scrape together enough money to build a home. It takes about a day’s wages to purchase a dozen cement blocks and almost all of four months wages to build a 12’ x 12’ home.  We build a wood-frame house that is finished with stucco. All projects include electricity, doors, windows, drywall, insulation, and a ceiling fan.  For a day by day, visit: http://www.casasporcristo.org/BuildAHomeGuide.asp
Yearbook distribution party
Come get your yearbook!
It's been a long wait, but the 2006-2007 yearbooks are finally here! We're having a party to give them out, so come pick yours up! The party will be Saturday at 7pm-8pm in the West Hall 1st floor lounge. Refreshments will be provided!

Freshmen, you're invited to come and browse through the yearbook and spend some time with upperclassmen. See you there!
Thanksgiving Luncheon
President Miller and the entire President's Cabinet (Rod Crafts, Steve Hannabury, Joanne Kossuth, Mike Moody, and Charlie Nolan) would like to invite all faculty, staff and students to be our guest at a Thanksgiving luncheon on Thursday, November 15th, beginning at noon.  This 7th annual Thanksgiving luncheon is one of the oldest traditions at Olin College and it provides an opportunity for the entire community to come together to enjoy an excellent roast turkey meal and the good company of friends, colleagues and classmates.

Please show your Olin ID card at the check-in desk when you arrive.  We look forward to seeing you.
Help Select the new VP of Development
Important Person, Important Committee
Olin is currently looking to hire a Vice-President of Development, and is forming a committee to figure out who it should be.

The VP of Development would be a cabinet level position and would be in charge of Olin's fundraising programs. We are looking for a student to serve on the selection committee that would hear the interviews and provide feedback to President Miller.

If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact core@olin.edu and provide a brief (2 sentences is fine) explanation of why you want to serve on this committee, and why you'd be good at it. The deadline for volunteering is Monday, November 12 @ Midnight.

P.S. You may also provide your feedback on using the Digest for rep solicitation by sending an e-mail to core@olin.edu.
Ambassador to Needham
Get Olin involved with the local community.
We are looking for a student who is passionate about coordinating the student body's interactions with the town of Needham and who would like to serve as Olin's Student Ambassador to Needham.

This position would be mostly self-defined, but the idea is that this student would coordinate the current interactions with Needham and help plan even more. If you are interested, please contact CORe.

If you feel that these interactions would be better coordinated and planned through another medium, please let CORe know that, too.
Fun With Committees
No really, we mean it.
Occasionally the GA (General Assembly) will create a committee to tackle CORe duties that do not require the attention of all 21 GA members. Recently, a few non-GA members served on some of these committees and actually enjoyed themselves. I know, we were shocked, too.

In light of this, we would like to invite as many non-GA members as possible to join as many GA committees as possible. This will both make CORe's inner workings more transparent and also ensure that all CORe committees have a variety of perspectives.

You can find the list of GA and CORe related committees and a brief description of each attached*. If you are interested in joining any of these committees (and we hope you are) you can e-mail core@olin.edu or the committee chairs directly.

As always, please send any feedback our way. Thanks!

*We have not included in the list the 5 committees expected to dissolve in the next two weeks.
