CORe Digest

The C
Re Digest
This episode of the Digest is brought to you by free t-shirts and yo-yos!
CORe has been up to some development, and we've come up with some new nifty electronics things. The CORe Calendar has moved, there is a new way to submit items to the CORe Calendar, and there is a new line item submission form! All right!
Accessing the CORe Calendar
The CORe Calendar has moved from the public folder "CORe Calendar" to the calendar of the user "CORe". To open it in Outlook, go to your Calendar Pane and click "Open a Shared Calendar...". When the dialog pops up, type in "CORe".

And there you have it, the CORe Calendar of on-campus events! Use it to make sure your club events don't conflict with other on-campus events and find out what is going on when you're bored!
Adding Events to the CORe Calendar
Meeting request CORe with the details of your event. I'll accept it, and it will appear on the CORe Calendar! Fabulous!
Line Item Submission Form
There is a form online at http://core.olin.edu/lineitem/ that is the new preferred way to submit line items. The form asks for all the information that is relevant to line items, and ought to prevent the need for follow-up e-mails to line items. You don't have to use it, but it should make things easier overall.
Isn't that nifty? If you look at the CORe Calendar right now, you can check out the events upcoming for Family Weekend!

Family Weekend
(With iCals!)
Family Weekend is just one day away! What are you planning to do with your family? Have you made your reservations? Be sure to add these Family Weekend activities to your Outlook calendar to be sure you fit in all the fun and quality family time. See you there!
SERV This Week!
This Friday at 3pm meet in the first floor lounge of West Hall *with or without family* to go to the Natick Community Organic Farm! We promise a great time will be had by all. NEXT Friday, drop by the Auditorium during community service hours to be trained as a project leader for Boston Cares (
www.bostoncares.org), RSVP by emailing
serv@olin.edu!
Thank you to everyone who participated in Take Back the Night! Casey Canfield, Carl Tappan, Alex Jones, and Sarah Allen all volunteered. Talk to them if you have questions about what they did at TBTN. Hopefully we can get an even bigger Olin presence next year.
Also, check out the SERV calendar in the dining hall for future opportunities.
Baja Suspension Design Review
Short: The Baja Team is having a public design review on our new suspension design this Friday at noon. We would really appreciate your input!
Long: Phoenix Racing, the Olin College SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Baja team, is an organization building an off-road vehicle for the national SAE competition, and we’d like you to come check out what we’ve done! We will be discussing our new variable camber suspension design, which is a radical diversion from our previous pre-designed and pre-manufactured system used in past years. We would like to hear what you think before we begin fabrication. Whether you’re a dedicated car enthusiast or you are just curious about what, exactly, we’ve been doing for the last month, you are more than welcome. Bagged lunches will be available for pickup in the dining hall. Hope to see you there!

NASA-Sponsored Winter in Florida
In January of 2008 (during the winter break) NASA and the Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium will cosponsor a program in which a group of aerospace engineering students will spend three weeks at the Kennedy Space Center. The pedagogical purpose of this program is to introduce students to the systems and operational aspects of space flight and to demonstrate the relationship between design and operations - how design decisions made a long time ago continue to influence maintenance requirements today. Understanding the relationship of design and operations is critical for the successful practice of engineering, but is extremely difficult to teach in the classroom, especially for space activities.
Originally designed for MIT aerospace engineering students only, we have been able to provide a wedge for the selection of Olin students (who have been selected to participate in this program in each of the past three years for co-curricular credit). Funds are available through the Massachusetts Space Grant to support transportation and lodging for all students participating in this program, known as JOIE (January Operational Internship Experience). If you are interested, please send the following to
steve.holt@olin.edu no later than Wednesday, October 17 (sorry for the short fuse, but the Massachusetts Space Grant Consortium is making its selections earlier than usual this year):
- Unofficial transcript
- Short statement (one paragraph to one page) indicating why you are well-suited to participate in the program and what you hope to gain from this experience
- Names of at least two Olin faculty members to call if references are needed
Flash Conference October 19th to 21st
Design Pedal Powered Machines with students from Wellesley, Babson and MIT
Next weekend, Olin Students for Awesome will host the second appropriate technology flash conference. During the weekend, students will form teams and design pedal powered machines for use in the developing and the developed world. Off campus experts Gwyn Jones from Merlin Bikes and Job Ebenezer from Technology for the Poor will provide advice and give talks over the course of the weekend. At the end of the event, we hope to have the bases for long term student projects.
The event will go from
6 - 9 on Friday
9 to 5:30 on Saturday
9 to 12 on Sunday
You'll meet amazing students from other colleges in the area, gain real world design experience, and still have time for homework. The designs may even be picked up by organizations in the developing world or submitting to the Innovate or Die pedal power competition run by Specialized and Google (
http://www.innovate-or-die.com/). What's there to lose? Sign up now.
Send questions to Jef Gluckstein.
Looking for physics tutor
I have a 12th-grade daughter in need of a physics tutor. Tutoring times and locations are flexible, though getting started soon would be fantastic! The offered tutoring rate is $30/hr, and I'm hoping for both fall and spring coverage. Please e-mail me with interest, and thanks! Dee, library
