The C
Re Digest
This episode of the Digest is brought to you by a crisp autumn breeze!
It's official. Despite the sweltering weather on Wednesday, it has been officially autumn for the better part of a week. Autumn is a pretty awesome season for a variety of reasons. The weather is exceedingly pleasant, you can teach young children about chlorophyll, and you can put large amounts of leaves into bags shaped like pumpkins. The history of autumn is a long one that most people aren't familiar with. Let me run through it for you.
The History of Autumn:
- 550 BC: Pythagoras conducts elementary research into autumn, observing that pine trees essentially are giant triangles.
- 1000 AD: Having sailed to America, Lief Ericson discovers that the rumors of autumn are true, but is unable to return to Europe to report.
- 1543 AD: As part of the Spanish Inquisition, autumn is expelled from Spain. Another season "fell" into the opening to maintain continuity.
- 1914 AD: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is assassinated, just months shy of the start of autumn, triggering the start of World War I.
- 1955 AD: Watson and Crick successfully sequence the genome of autumn.
- 1969 AD: The Beatles release their album "Abbey Road" on September 26th. The depiction of trees with green leaves on the cover during the season of autumn created a tremendous anachronistic uproar from the music community.
- 2006 AD: Scientists promise "Cure to Autumn" in the next decade. Some remain skeptical.
I hope you found that Public Service Announcement informative and useful in your everyday life.
There's a bunch going on this week! Check out the HALO 3 tournament at Babson, the Needham Harvest Fair, and a chance for mock interviews during Career Initiatives Day! Also, if you want to present at Something Completely Different during parent's weekend, be sure to check out the announcement below. Present at Something Completely Different
Tell the community (and parents!) about something cool you’ve been up to during Parents’ Weekend
Short: Want to present at Something Completely Different during Parents’ Weekend? E-mail
Gregory.marra@students.olin.edu a paragraph about what you want to talk about!
Of Moderate Length:
Something Completely Different is a recurring event where community members are invited to give short, informal presentations on anything exciting they want to present about. It’s not formal like Expo, so non-academic presentations are encouraged! Talk about your experience vacationing somewhere exotic, the cool internship you had over the summer, or a hobby you’re passionate about.
The presentations are only five minutes long, so they’re super easy to put together. The idea is to get the audience’s feet wet, so that afterwards anyone who was interested in your presentation can come find out more.
If you want to present, send an e-mail to Greg (
Gregory.marra@students.olin.edu) by Sunday the 30th. Something Completely Different will be Friday the 12th of October from 8:00pm to 9:30pm as part of Family Weekend, so we’re expecting a big crowd! If there are more presentations than our time slot allows for, don’t worry! There will be more Something Completely Differents in the future, so you will have more opportunities to present and hear about what other people have been working on!
Thanks, and we’re looking forward to hearing about all the cool things you do!
Donate Old Athletic Shoes
Recycle your old shoes!
There is a drop-off location in Chestnut Hill that will take up to 10 pairs. I can collect the shoes from you and as soon as I have 10 pairs I will head on over to Chestnut Hill. I will do this as often as I can throughout the semester. You can drop the shoes off at my office in OSL and I will take it from there. If I'm not in the office, just leave the shoes with a note on them so I know who to thank!
Needham Harvest Fair - 9/29 10:00-3:00p
Olin Participating in Souperbowl
This Saturday, September 29th Needham will host is annual Harvest Fair Event in Needham Center from 10:00-3:00 pm. Entertainment and other activities will be provided. Additionally, the event will once again feature the "Souperbowl" - the soup tasting even under the tent on the Needham Town Common. Thanks to the hard work of George Butler, Olin is participating in this event, which runs from 11:30-1:30, with a Garden Vegetable soup entry.
Student volunteers, Stephen Westwood and Jennifer Keene will be on hand to serve soup and chat about Olin. If you care to join them or myself at the event, please email me (
alyson.goodrow@olin.edu). Otherwise feel free to attend and mingle with the Needham community.
Sleep: Did You Know?
Get the facts!
Did you know…
that the direct and indirect impact of daytime sleepiness and sleep disorders on the national economy is estimated to be $100 billion annually?
that most teenagers need at least 8.5 to 9.25 hours of sleep each night and most adults need 7 to 9 hours?
that drinking caffeine 3 to 6 hours before bedtime can double the time it takes to fall asleep and quadruple the number of time a person wakes in the night?
that trying to work off "sleep debt" by sleeping extra on the weekend is not as effective as getting sleep in the first place? (a bit obvious…)

Take Back the Night!
Help raise awareness about violence against women
Join the Needham community on Saturday, October 6th at 7pm at Memorial Field on Highland Avenue (Needham High School) to participate in an event aimed at raising awareness in our community about violence against women. The evening will include a march around town, guest speakers, live bands, and much more! Organizers include the Needham Domestic Violence Action Committee and several Needham High School students. Take Back the Night first started in Europe in 1976 to protect women who feared walking home at night alone and it has continued all over the globe as a sign of empowerment for women, men, and children. Now it has become a long standing tradition on college campuses around the country and the Needham community is hoping to start a tradition here. Participate in the event or volunteer to help! For more information, contact me or Alex Hogan at ahogan@town.needham.ma.us. Thanks! The 1st Annual Olin College Open Call for Photos.

Product Design: Refrigerators
Is it running?
Does your family have a refrigerator? Are you often on-the-go? If so, our product design team would love to interview you and shadow you using your refrigerator to help guide us in our redesign efforts.
Our team conducting some user interviews and taking observations of how people use their fridges. We would like to know if we could possibly have about 30 minutes of your time to observe how you and your family use the refrigerator and ask a few questions. If it is possible, it would be great if this were during a time in which you are coming back from grocery shopping and putting things away, or preparing a meal. Thanks!
