CORe Digest

September 20th 2007

The CRRRRe Digest

This episode of the Digest is brought to you by the letter Arrrrrr!

Ahoy maties!

I hope ye' scurvy sea dogs bin' takin' advantadge of them thar' International Talk like a Pirate Day, which has bin' goin' on fer the better part of the week. Even if ye' missed the festivities, there's no wrong time to talk like a pirate (or eat a Reese's)!

"International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday invented by John Baur ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. The date was selected because it was the birthday of Summers' ex-wife and consequently would be easy for him to remember."1

Personally, I think that getting to greet people as "Ahoy, Pad'ner!" during the Dining Hall's Texas BBQ was pretty darn awesome.

In on-campus news, congratulations to the winners of the Honor Board and SERV elections, and stay tuned for the SERV run-off election! Speaking of SERV, this Sunday is the Race for the Cure, so make sure to sign up on the ride wiki so you can get there! On the way, make sure not to walk on the grass, because facilities is spraying it to make it nice and green. Perhaps instead of playing frisbee in the O, you can go visit your friendly Writing NINJAs and get them to explain the proper usage of a semicolon; it would be fun! There are also tons of employment opportunities if you want to help people do stuff in exchange for money.

Possible Series on Olin
Dear Olin Community,

A producer from Herzog Cowen, a production company in Los Angeles, will be on campus next week to do some shooting and evaluate whether Olin could be the basis for some sort of series of programs on national cable TV. They would like to focus on the process of invention and how that process expresses itself here at Olin. Thus, the spotlight will be on inventions, devices, projects, entrepreneurial ventures, etc., originating at Olin, and on telling the story of how those inventions came to be. At the same time, they want to feature some of the unique aspects of Olin—the learning continuum, the well-roundedness of our students and other features of the college.

There is always the downside risk that such a degree of openness could produce results you don’t want, or feature aspects of the institution that you don’t want featured. However, I have a good feeling about the intent of this group. In my estimation, they “get” Olin, and understand what is special about it. They have invited me to make creative suggestions about how to shape the program, and I think my office can work with them in a way that will give them the great stories and visuals they need, while we will get a result that portrays us accurately and interestingly.

Of course, if we get the inkling as a result of next week’s visit that their intentions are not good, or would not portray us in a positive light, we are not obligated to go forward with this. But, as I say, based on my dealings with the company so far, I have a good feeling about them. Herzog Cowen has a gold-plated client list that speaks well for their professionalism and ability to work with a wide variety of organizations.

I would be glad to get your thoughts on this initiative, and suggestions for inventions and other aspects of Olin that could be featured. Thanks for taking the time to read this “spam.”

SERV Election Results
Thank you to everyone who ran. All of the applicants were extremely qualified and we look forward to working with all of you.

Congratulations to our new SERV Board member, Ollie Haas.
Run Off Election

We will be having a run-off election between Phil Dirske and Hari Iyer soon, as they were voted equally excellent.  We will create a new election and send an email to students once this is complete.

Thank you to everyone for running and voting, and stay tuned for the run-off election information!

Love,
SERV Board
First Ever Weekly Honor Board Question
As an experiment in noninvasive outreach, the Honor Board is going to be putting out a series of questions in the CORe Digest.  Each week there will be a single question for you to vote on, and the next week we will publish the results in the digest.  These questions are intended to be thought provoking and somewhat entertaining, but they’re also meant to survey the community opinion on controversial issues.  Please feel free to give us feedback at any time by emailing the Honor Board.

In the future we will try to embed these polls directly into the digest, but for now you’ll have to follow this link to the poll.
Honor Board Election Results
Thank you to all of the candidates who ran for a seat on the Honor Board, you were all very well qualified.

The 2011 Honor Board members this year are Tess Edmonds and Alyssa Levitz.

Yours truly,
The Honor Board.

Campus Day of Service Thank You
Thank you to the many Olin students who participated in the Campus Day of Service through Boston Cares on Saturday, September 15th!  Approximately 62 Olin students took part in the day, which was the greatest number of students among all five colleges represented.  Project sites included: Boston Nature Center, Chestnut Hill Reservation, and the Stone Dust Path Project with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.  Kudos to everyone for doing such great work!
On-Campus Memorial Service
A joint memorial service for Matthew Bowes '10 and Rachel Karis '11 will be held on Wednesday, October 3, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium.  The Reverend Dr. Thomas P. Sullivan, former Director of Spiritual Life at Babson College, will lead the service.  Both families will attend.  Please check the College website, under "Off-Campus Critical Updates," for other relevant information.
Take Back the Night!
Help raise awareness about violence against women
Join the Needham community on Saturday, October 6th at 7pm at Memorial Field on Highland Avenue (Needham High School) to participate in an event aimed at raising awareness in our community about violence against women.  The evening will include a march around town, guest speakers, live bands, and much more!  Organizers include the Needham Domestic Violence Action Committee and several Needham High School students.  Take Back the Night first started in Europe in 1976 to protect women who feared walking home at night alone and it has continued all over the globe as a sign of empowerment for women, men, and children.  Now it has become a long stranding tradition on college campuses around the country and the Needham community is hoping to start a tradition here.  Participate in the event or volunteer to help!  For more information, contact me or Alex Hogan at ahogan@town.needham.ma.us.  Thanks!

Photoshop Learn-a-Thon!
It's like Paint, only with more buttons!
Photoshop Learn-a-thon! Friday the 19th, 8:00pm, 1st Floor West Hall Lounge Learn about the workspace, layers, filters, and more!

Short: Come to WH1 at 8:00 on Friday to play with Photoshop stuff.

Long: A few of us are going to be teaching some basic Photoshop skills this Friday if anyone wants to learn. We’ll be starting from “how to open files,” so no Photoshop experience whatsoever is required. If you already know basic stuff, just show up and we’ll figure out something neat and show you separately. This might be particularly useful for the Freshmen who need to make pretty pictures of their hoppers…

Make sure you bring your laptop! It won’t matter if you have Photoshop CS2 or CS3; they’re pretty much the same.

The Harvest Moon Festival is one of the major Chinese holidays.  It occurs around the autumn equinox in the northern hemisphere, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.  Originally a way to worship the moon, the festival is now more of a social event where extended families unite in the festivities.
