CORe Digest

The CRe Digest

Hey everyone.

To say that this week has been hard would be a tremendous understatement. Remember, the R2s, OSL, the faculty and staff are all here for you. They all care about this community and will do everything they can to help.

The Council of Olin Representatives (CORe), Olin College's student government, offers our heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends of Matt and Rachel. The losses to their families and the Olin community are so profound that they transcend words. We pledge to do everything possible to support their families and to assist the College in remembering their contributions to our school.

Take advantage of all the fun things going on this week, take a break from studying, go have fun times with your friends. Look up pirate slang (you'll need it next week). Mix soft serve and hot chocolate and stir it up with a fork for a home-brew milkshake. Sit outside and enjoy the weather. Do what you love.

A million ways to SERVe
Pick out one or two you're passionate about!
Race for the Cure Registration is *still open* go to serv.olin.edu and click the link "do it now!" to sign up.  The cost to you is just $10.  We don't have as many people as last year, so help out!

SERV needs a few volunteers who want to work with the Needham community at the annual Souperbowl on the 29th from 10-3.  If enough people volunteer, we will schedule shifts.  It's a great way to get into the community.

Knitting is available in the first floor lounge of East Hall for service projects!

Missed out on SERV tables at club fair last week?
Contact Jill Kiser if you want to work on a tutoring project in downtown Boston, Rachel Nancollas if you want to work with CODA, and Ellen Chisa to work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Other opportunities include FIRST Robotics (contact Ash Walker), One Laptop per Child (Nikki Lee), Habitat for Humanity (Leslie Velez).

Finally, one special opportunity we have is for tutoring in Needham.   This is a second grader who needs nontraditional tutoring- in fact, it's more of a science "mentor" who can hang out and have fun with engineering related projects.  You'd make a little extra income and make a difference in the life of this second grader.  Want more information? Please contact Ellen Chisa or Alison Black.

Day of Service is Saturday!  If you signed up and haven't been contacted about your site, please let us know.  Also, the rides wiki is at http://mrwiki.olin.edu/mrwiki/DayOfService so make sure to sign up.

Remember to read the packet SERV sent out about elections- elections will be next Wednesday at 12:30, right after Honor Board elections, in the auditorium.

Summer Book Suggestions Due by October 31
The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee is accepting suggestions for next summer's book.  The committee will consider four factors in reviewing your suggestions:  readability, lends itself to a Convocation discussion, relates to the Olin curriculum, and is available in paperback or at paperback price.  Suggestions (title, author and brief rationale) should be sent to Rod Crafts (rod.crafts@olin.edu) by Wednesday, October 31.  The Summer Book Program is supported by the class gift from the Class of 2006.

Mark your calendars now for next fall's Convocation on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium.
Celebrate Constitution Day
Just like last year, another event to celebrate Constitution Day will be held on Tuesday, September 18 2007, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at the Olin College Auditorium.  Guest speakers will be present to discuss Supreme Court cases.  Ice cream sundae refreshments will be provided.  All are welcome.  This event is co-sponsored by Babson and Olin College.
Looking for an Afternoon Sitter
We are looking for someone after school from 2:30pm - 6:30pm, Monday thru Friday. We live in Needham and have two girls, ages 9 and 6 who are a lot of fun. If you are interested, please feel free to email (anne@emnodesigns.com) as soon as you can. I think we are very easy going parents and are looking for someone who is responsible and easy going as well. We have an adorable 10 yr. old wheaton terrier, so hopefully you are ok with pets. The kids started school today and I would like to find someone by Sunday, so depending on your schedule maybe we could touch base and see if you are a good fit. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Anne anne@emnodesigns.com
