The C
re Digest
This episode of the Digest is brought to you by Early September Birthdays!
If you want the Digest to shoutout your birthday, let me know. Then everyone will wish you happy birthday. Everyone.
Today (yesterday?) is (was?) Alyshia's Birthday! Wish her a happy post-facto birthday tomorrow! Also, Lindsay Kaye and Kate Swift-Spong's birthdays were Wednesday! Wish them a happy double-post-facto birthday! It's also Jon Cass's half-birthday, but I don't know if that counts. He claims it's like sin and cosine, but I don't buy it. It's not any of the R2's birthdays this week, so wish them all happy birthday and see if you can do it before they realize what's going on.
Here is how to most effectively hit up all the fun Olin events this weekend. Wake up, go to any applicable classes, and some non-applicable ones if you are up to it. Then go to the Club Fair from 4:00 to 6:00. Then, eat some dinner. Following dinner, go to the OCF Ice Cream Social between the dorms. Following that, head back up the stairs to go to SAC Hypnotist show! Word on the street is you might see some of your favorite Assistant Deans of Campus Life on stage. At this point, it is probably a good idea to go to sleep. But fret not! Saturday morning, you can go check out the first soccer game of the year at 10:00AM. Then, on Sunday, go to the Disc Club Hat Tournament from 1:00 to 7:00 and play frisbee with the whole BBOW community. Then you have to make a tough choice: SWE is having their first meeting of the year at 7:00 in WH1, complete with cheesecake, or Disc Club is concluding their tournament with a barbeque.
If you choose the SWE meeting, turn to page 37.
If you choose the barbeque, turn to page 42.
Don't forget to vote in the CORe Elections for your (Class and) Hall Reps! Go to http://core.olin.edu/apps/vote and vote for your representatives! The secret passwords for classes were mailed to classes, and secret passwords for halls were said aloud at the election speeches. Ask your neighbors or e-mail CORe if you have forgotten them.
Note: Due to popular demand and saving your inboxes from half meg emails, attachments that are large (ie: Not small images or iCals) will not be included as attachments with the e-mailed digest. They can be found on the Digest website as downloads.

Ultimate Frisbee Hat Tourney!
Olin hosts a hat tournament for the BBOW consortium
Come one, come all to the first ever BBOW frisbee tournament on Sunday, September 9th! Players of all skill levels are encouraged to come. This is a hat tournament, so you don't need to be part of a team to play - just show up and give us your name and we'll make some teams.
Play will go from approximately 1 PM until 7 PM. If you can't make it at 1, just come when you can and we'll add you to a team!
There will be an inter-school BBQ for socializing directly after the tourney between the dorms.
We will provide bagels, water, and some snack foods of some kind.
Be sure to bring a light shirt and a dark shirt as well as appropriate footwear!
If you know in advance that you will (or probably will) be coming, or if you have any questions, please e-mail Jon Cass at
Jonathan.Cass@students.olin.edu and let him know what your status is. Hope to see you on the field!
ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS
Direct deposit information
As a condition of employment and/or acceptance to the College, students are required to accept direct deposit for their wages and reimbursements for approved expenses. The College will deposit the funds directly into the bank account(s) of your choice, as long as the designated bank is a member of NEACH (New England Automatic Clearing House). Therefore, it is necessary for all students to fill out the attached direct deposit form and return it to Financial Services (OC316) immediately.
Thank you.

Volunteer Position with NERGG ( New England Regional Genetics Group)
Part-time web support for non-profit genetics education organization.
Build your resume and earn a glowing letter of recommendation in exchange for very limited
web assistance. We are looking for a student to upload/replace PDFs, add links, and rework our
site as needed. We estimate approximately 5 hours of work a month. NERGG, New England Regional Genetics Group, and their executive director are based here in Needham. Student would work in communication with Executive Director via phone, email or occasional meeting. Please view
www.nergg.org and contact Mary Frances Garber at 781-444-0126 for more information.
Donate Old Athletic Shoes
Recycle your old shoes!
There is a drop-off location in Chestnut Hill that will take up to 10 pairs. I can collect the shoes from you and as soon as I have 10 pairs I will head on over to Chestnut Hill. I will do this as often as I can throughout the semester. You can drop the shoes off at my office in OSL and I will take it from there. If I'm not in the office, just leave the shoes with a note on them so I know who to thank!
Social Justice Reading Group
What does it mean to strive for social justice? Where do our visions of
justice come from? How will we know we are on the right track? Who decides?
An eclectic set of readings and topics emerge as we sit around and munch on
sweet and savory late evening snacks in Mark and Caryn¹s apartment. This
year we have purchased new floor mats for our members!
We will begin the year with a book called Gender and Discourse. Caryn hopes
we can finally bite into some Foucault on power and knowledge this year. The
rest is up to you. Readings are light (around 20 pages per week);
conversations have occasionally become heavy.
If interested, please email Mark Chang (mark.chang@olin.edu) so we can
schedule a time in the next week.
Audition for The Power Chords - Olin's a cappella group

Auditions will be held in the Jam Room (AC129) on
Friday, September 7th from 6-8 PM
Saturday, September 8th from 1-3 PM
(if you can't make any of these time slots please e-mail Jon and we will work something out)
and callbacks will be
Saturday, September 8th from 7-9 PM
Auditions will consist of
- Warmup / range check
- Singing scales
- Tonal memory
- Learning/singing a few bars of a harmony
- Sight-singing a few bars
- Singing a prepared solo piece (just a verse of a song is fine - nothing to worry much about)
Voice Lessons
A group of students is planning on taking a passionate pursuit in voice this semester. We will be working with Ms. Kathryn Fields, a voice instructor at Brown University, and will be studying pieces in French. We have worked with Ms. Fields before and have had a wonderful time learning the art of voice. We will be meeting Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 in the jam room each week. This activity will be accompanied by a recital at the end of the semester where we will each perform a piece that we have worked on all semester to showcase our improvement. All skill levels are welcome. Please contact Lauren Glanville if you have any questions or would like to join us.
Gender and Engineering Co-Curricular Starting Up!
Come, see, experience, discuss the intersection of gender and engineering (and math and science too!) at the Gender and Engineering co-curricular. We will watch films and read relevant articles. Meets Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 in OC373. Contact Alisha, Caitrin, Oscar, or Zhenya for info!
THE SAATCHI & SAATCHI AWARD FOR WORLD CHANGING IDEAS 2007 (For Innovation in Communication)
Deadline: Friday September 28th
The Saatchi & Saatchi Award for World Changing Ideas exists to recognize brilliant thinking, to bring it to the world’s attention and to reward the most outstanding innovation with a prize worth $100,000.
Who Can Enter What
We invite submissions from innovators around the world.
Their ideas may be scientific, linguistic, artistic, technological. They may be hi-tech, lo-tech or no-tech.
Their ideas may be in prototype, the finished thing or merely a compelling concept.
Previous finalists have ranged from a tornado early-warning system, self-adjusting spectacles, a sonar system that enables the visually-impaired to ‘see’ with their ears, a compound that can replicate the sensitivity of human skin, a new kind of aeroplane, a storage system for the world’s languages, viable electric lighting for the developing world, and near-instant buildings for disaster relief.
Yes, communication is a vast territory.
Any innovation which could improve, revolutionize, or make possible communication between individuals, between individuals and their environment, between companies and their customers, between performers and their audiences, between nations or even between planets will be considered.
It costs nothing to enter the Saatchi & Saatchi Award for World Changing Ideas, but winning the prize could change your world.
HOW TO ENTER
For entries to be complete and correct they must contain the following:
- A typewritten description of no more than 500 words. This description should include what the innovation is, explain how it works and entrants should specify what they believe to be the impact of the innovation. - A completed entry form
- A signed Deed of Eligibility and Release
- Proof that your idea is capable of patent, copyright, registered design, design right or equivalent protection.
