CORe Digest

The Cre Digest

This episode of the Digest is brought to you by BACK TO SCHOOL!

Fun replacement O's will return next week. I promise.

Hello Class of 2011! I hope all of you had exciting orientations, and are ready for the upcoming year at Olin!

The CORe Digest is a weekly newsletter sent out by CORe (Council of Olin REpresentatives (Student Government)) to inform students of events going on on campus and any announcements that might affect them. Whether FWOP (Franklin W. Olin Players) is putting on a show, Midnight Riders (Unicycling Club) is busting out the extra-tall unicycle, or DISCO (DISCO Is a Sweet Club at Olin (DDR Club)) is having a tournment, the CORe Digest is your place to find out. You can expect a copy delivered fresh to your inbox every week.

There are a lot of awesome events coming up on campus! OSL has a lot of awesome announcements about easier ways to get to cross enrolled courses and Boston with new and improved shuttle services, SERV has tons of upcoming opportunities for you to easily get involved in community service on campus (sign up for Race for the Cure at lunch!), and there's just generally a lot of start-of-the-year type things you're going to want to know about!

CORe Calendar: In Outlook Friday August 31:

Jean Ricker -- Financial Aid Officer in the StAR Center
Come to the Meet n' Greet!
Jean Ricker, previously Vice President for Compliance and Client Relations at the Higher Education Assistance Group (HEAG), Inc., has joined the staff as part-time Financial Aid Officer.  She reports to Linda Canavan.  Prior to her role at HEAG, she served as an Associate Director of Financial Aid at Regis College, a Senior Assistant Director of Financial Assistance at Emerson College, and an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Financial Assistance at Boston University.  Jean can be found in the Student Accounts & Records (StAR) Center, at jean.ricker@olin.edu or at x2343.  Please welcome her to the Olin community.

On Wednesday, September 12, 2007, there will be an informal "meet and greet" in the dining hall from 11-1pm. Come by and say hi!
OSL Open Office Hours
Come talk to us!
Have a question?  Have something on your mind?  Need to relax and chat?  Come visit OSL staff during open office hours this semester: Mondays from 3:00 to 5:00 with Carol, Tuesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 with Nick, Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 with Alison, and Thursdays from 12:00 to 2:00 with Rod.  On Fridays, we will continue with our Student Life lunch table in the dining hall at noon.  In addition, Nick has open hours in his West Hall apartment on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 and Rod has open hours in his East Hall apartment on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 6:00.  Can't remember all of this information at once?  Flyers are posted with this info in the residence halls and around campus.
Profs with Props!
Class of 2011:  Come learn fun and interesting things about some of Olin's professors at the wildly popular event entitled "Profs with Props."  We'll meet in the West Hall first floor lounge on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00pm.  Professors will share talents, interests, experiences, and even some props!  You never know what you might find out.
Putnam Math Competition Prep (informal co-curricular)
Over the past few years, students at Olin College have participated in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition (Putnam exam). This is an informal weekly seminar/meeting which is designed to prepare you for the Putnam exam. The Putnam exam is held in the first week of December each year and consists of two three-hour exams totaling 12 problems. These problems, in principle, can be solved using elementary calculus and discrete mathematical techniques, but are notorious for their difficulty (out of 120 points, the median score is 0).  You are only allowed to take the exam four times, only during your undergraduate years. The Putnam exam is well known in the mathematical, science, and even business world and a score above the median could and should be a part of your resume in the future.

An additional activity will be the attempt to solve sertain interesting problems proposed regularly by Math Horizons and Mathematics Magazine - solutions to those problems would be sent to the magazines for publication, and do count as a publication on your record!

Yet another possiblity, if there is enough interest, is a short chess break once in while. Chess is as much about mathematical thinking as it is about personality, so this should provide a different kind of exciting challenge and tap on your competitive spirit! We could also learn, provided we have the equipment, an interesting team-chess varaition I learned from some fellow Harvard math professors and students.

Sessions will meet once weekly in the evening.  There will be some work to be done outside of the session, which will be posted in an open format for all students.

Since this is informal, please, contact me to sign up if you are interested!

It's on the Portal!
For the past several years, Olin College has used the Olin Community on Blackboard for posting items such as student jobs, Olin policies, forms and other items of interest.  We have been working over the last few months to transition these items over to the Portal.  IT, in conjunction with the Portal Working Group, would like to invite you to sign-on to the Portal for all your on campus needs.  The Portal will provide you with access to the following:

  • Resource Links
  • Campus events
  • Academic information
  • Class lists, course schedules and can input grades
  • Benefit information and other resources.
  • Student Employment information
What does this mean for Blackboard?

This means that the Olin Community on Blackboard will no longer be accessible.  Blackboard will continue to serve Olin as means to access course materials.

How do I access the Portal?

To login into PhoenixNet, point your browser to https://my.olin.edu and enter your network credentials.  Please contact helpdesk@olin.edu if you have difficulty accessing PhoenixNet.

I have feedback to give.  Where do I send it?

As always, your feedback is always welcome at myolin@olin.edu

And remember:  It’s on the Portal…
