CRe Digest

Special Pre-Freshmen Edition!

Hello Class of 2011! I hope all of you are having exciting summers, whether you are working, taking a break after high school, or planning how it is you're going to fit all your clothes into one little tiny dresser at Olin!

The CORe Digest is a weekly newsletter sent out by CORe (Council of Olin REpresentatives (Student Government)) to inform students of events going on on campus and any announcements that might affect them. Whether FWOP (Franklin W. Olin Players) is putting on a show, Midnight Riders (Unicycling Club) is busting out the extra-tall unicycle, or DISCO (DISCO Is a Sweet Club at Olin (DDR Club)) is having a tournment, the CORe Digest is your place to find out. You can expect a copy delivered fresh to your inbox every week.

This issue of the CORe Digest is tailored to informing you of events that will be going on at Olin shortly after you arrive! Some clubs have been hard at work over the summer planning their fall events (and the rest will be scrambling to do so once we all get back!). Below, you will find a list of club events relevant to freshmen happening in the first few days after Orientation.

So take a read through this e-mail for a sample of what the CORe Digest is like, and read about all the exciting events taking place shortly after you arrive!

SERV - Volunteerism!
Hey 2011! Remember all those essays you wrote about philanthropy? Take some time out of your coming days at Olin to help out and serve our local community!

Upcoming opportunities include volunteering at soup kitchens and working with Boston Cares during Labor Day weekend (sign up at the SERV table at Club fair!)

Want to get a head start now? Go over to the SERV website: serv.olin.edu and look at the link entitled "Do It Now!" It will have instructions to sign up for Race for the Cure in Boston.

Last year Olin had the largest team at the event- larger than MIT or Tuft's dental and we'd love to do it again. Thanks to co-sponsorship by SAC (Student Activities Committee), Olin subsidizes entry so it only costs you $10, it's a great way to meet people, and have a fun day while helping fight breast cancer.

Parents are also invited to participate on our team if they want to be in the race, but we cannot subsidize their entries.

Questions? Want to know how to get more involved with SERV? Contact any of the SERV Board: firstname.lastname@students.olin.edu

You Got Me Hypnotized, September 7th, 9pm at Olin OSL and SAC team up to leave you laughing, clapping, and most importantly, hypnotized! Dan Lornitis, a magician/comedian/hypnotist with over 2000 live performances, is coming to Olin on September 7th for what promises to be an awesome show.

Announcement:
SAC RECRUITING
Freshmen: Interested in helping to plan and execute events for the Olin student body?  Check out the SAC table at the club fair on September 7th to pick up an application or email sac@olin.edu to request one.
Babson-Olin Catholic Association - Catholic Mass
Catholic students: please be aware that orientation happens over a Sunday. If you would still like to attend mass that weekend, Fr. Gene from Babson will be saying mass Saturday evening (at 4:30 or 5:00 PM) and Monday evening (at 5:00 PM), in the Glavin Family chapel, which is a 5 minute walk from Olin. We have already confirmed that these times do not conflict with any orientation activities.

Thanks, and have a blast at orientation,
The Babson-Olin Catholic Association

Olin Phoenix Soccer Club
Olin will be fielding a team for the full field, outdoor, 11v11 Boston Ski and Sports Club Saturday league. This team will be co-ed, with players of all skill levels welcome. It will ask a medium (~6 hr/wk) level of commitment, with a few weekly practices and a weekly home game on the Olin soccer fields. The team will be focused on improving skills while having a blast on the soccer pitch. Join us for our 2nd season! Gear up and get some touches/training in before arrival to get a jump on the season. With no league fees and all home games, all you need to do is bring your A game.  Photos here.

First practice Saturday 9/1/07 -  2 to 4 pm, on the Olin soccer field. If you’re going on the Outing Club trip, aim for the Sun/Mon hike to avoid conflicts.
First game Saturday 9/8/07 -  Two 35 minute halves of full field glory!

 Contact Bennett@students.olin.edu if interested.
Open Kickoff Brunch

For the fourth year in a row, Open would like to invite all incoming Olin students to our annual kickoff brunch! This Labor Day, visit Claxton Field in Needham (~5 minutes from campus) for a day of wonderful company, fun activities, and free food. This is a great opportunity to meet returning students and faculty, and celebrate the beginning of the year. We’ll send out more information towards the end of August (coordinating rides, directions, et cetera); in the meantime, go ahead and mark your calendar for 11am–3pm on Monday, September 3. You can contact us at open@clubs.olin.edu if you have any questions.
Olin Christian Fellowship Ice Cream Social
Come have an ICE CREAM SUNDAE, chat, and enjoy good times, Friday the 31st from 7:00 to 9:00 PM between the dorms.  Remember, Olin Christian Fellowship activities are open to everyone! So, come and bring a friend!
Olin Entrepreneurial Group

Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has an exciting year ahead of us and we look forward to having you join us! Take a break and relax at our kick off meeting on Thursday, September 6th (more details to follow later.) This year we will be hosting two exciting conferences: a high school engineering design conference (Design It!) and the SWE Region F 2008 conference, a large event that will involve professionals, other SWE students, great sessions, and a career fair. We'll be discussing these and other opportunities like outreach and volunteer work with local organizations and events around campus. For more information about what SWE does, please see http://swe.olin.edu/ or email swe@olin.edu.
Honor Board!
Honor Board Elections will be help at 7:00pm on September 12th in the Auditorium. Each year the entering class elects two students to the Honor Board. During this session, the student body will hear from those students that are interested in being on the board. Voting will take place immediately afterwards.
