Re Digest
Because you need them to eat most foods.
It's only my first year here at Olin College, so I admit that coming in I didn't really know what to expect. I had heard that this place was dynamic and open to change, and that I couldn't expect anything to be like it was yesterday. A place where you can go up to any faculty or staff member and start up an interesting conversation about almost anything. Did Olin live up to it's reputation as a place never twice the same?
Oh yes it did.
I had finally returned to campus following the long, snowy months at home over winter break, and I was just sitting down to eat my first Olin meal in the dining hall. Little did I know that trickery had occured over the recess, and much to my surprise, not a piece of flatware was to be found anywhere in sight! I looked in all the usual places, which at the time was that little nook under the stairs. Distraught, my search grew wider and wider until I finally I found a source of silvery utensils. They had been right under my nose the entire time, hidden in the last place anyone would look - right next to the food!
I quickly grabbed a fork and knife, lest they disappear again before I acted. But this wasn't to be the end of the silverware shenanigens, oh no. Only a few weeks later, at the first Candidate's Weekend, I showed up early to dinner, eager to edge out the swarm of prospective students that was sure to follow. I grabbed a plastic plate and a napkin, and went to reach for one of the forks. However, as I lifted the glistening, metallic fork, it was surprisingly light and before I could react, it was flying, tines first, through the air. Luckily, no one was injured in the Great February Fork Throwing incident, but children still whisper it to each other when they think parents aren't listening.
The moral of the story is: never forget your fork.
Finals are winding down, which means there isn't much left to do except for Expo and get ready for commencement! Be sure to read this week's announcements for a significant policy change from the Board of Trustees, exciting news about a partner program with Wellesley, and announcements for some of the big events going on on campus this week (including over 300 cookies baked by Mr. Ben Salinas for the OEG Barbeque tomorrow at the Foundry)! The yard sale and CCO are this weekend, so consider selling your extra junk to get extra unrestricted funds for your club. Seriously, there's just so much stuff you have to read the calendar below.
Cordially,

Policy Revision: Students Required to Live on Campus
"Dorms like palaces"
Earlier this week, the Student Life Committee of the Board of Trustees recommended to the full Board of Trustees that all students be required to live on campus. The full Board approved this policy revision. Exceptions will be:
- for 2007-08 only, students who have already notified the Office of Student Life that they plan to live off-campus
- students approved by the Dean of Student Life due to a personal circumstance (e.g., married students)
This new policy acknowledges the importance of community, connectedness, and teamwork at Olin as well as fairness to all students.
Questions about this policy revision may be directed to Rod Crafts, Angela Sharer or Anthony Roldan. Angela has been the student representative to the Student Life Committee during 2006-07 and Anthony will be the student representative during 2007-08. Both Angela and Anthony attended the recent Committee meeting.

Presentation on Global Warming to be Given in Needham
-- Climate Project Slide Show (the basis for the movie An Inconvenient Truth), Sponsored by Democratic Town Committee --
Global warming is real, its impacts can already be seen and America needs to take action now to confront the climate crisis. Keith Bergman, a presenter for The Climate Project will bring that message to Needham when he presents the global warming slide show painstakingly developed by Vice President Al Gore and as reflected in the book and award-winning Paramount Films documentary – An Inconvenient Truth.
The program, hosted by the Needham Democratic Town Committee, will be held on Thursday, May 17th at 7:30 pm in the Community Room at the Needham Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.
“Global warming is a serious issue, and we must all do our part to help solve it,” said Representative Lida Harkins, Chair of the Needham Democratic Town Committee. “I’m happy that we are able to bring Mr. Bergman and the Climate Project slide show to our town, giving Needham citizens an opportunity to become personally aware of this issue and ideas about what they can do to help.”
Bergman was among the first fifty individuals trained by former Vice President Al Gore and his non-profit,
The Climate Project, to go out and give the slide show on global warming featured in
An Inconvenient Truth. Bergman attended the inaugural training program from September 24-26, 2006, in Tennessee. Trainees have all volunteered to give the slide show at least 10 times in the next year, to educate Americans about the climate crisis and what can be done to solve it. Bergman returned to Nashville January 2-4, 2007 accepting an invitation to work with
Al Gore and The Climate Project as a volunteer "mentor" for a new class of 200 trainees.
The Climate Project is a movement to educate and engage citizens, and governments into solving bring education, research and citizen action programs that the growing climate crisis. The Climate Project can be found on the web at
