The Sun is Shining!
I did it! I finally finished my weather machine and have used it to get rid of the rain and clouds once and for all! (The machine is out in one of the shipping containers behind the AC, if you want to check it out. I built it with nothing but twine, a few toothpicks, some solder, and a weather machine). Did you know that the Sun is 8.31 light-minutes from the Earth? That means that by the time you finish reading the Digest, light could have traveled there and back three times!* Can you believe it takes light less time to get from the Sun to the Earth than it takes me to get ready for class in the morning? That's almost as crazy as that one time when the water went out!
- The Sun is a tabloid daily newspaper published in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland with the highest circulation of any daily English-language newspaper in the world, standing at 3,107,412 copies daily in the first half of 2006
- Sun Microsystems, Inc. is an American vendor of computers, computer components, computer software, and information-technology services, founded on 24 February 1982. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California (part of Silicon Valley), on the former west campus of the Agnews Developmental Center.
- The Sun is a 2005 Russian biographical film about Emperor Hirohito directed by Alexander Sokurov.
- The Sun (XIX) is a trump card in the tarot deck. Tarot trumps are often called "Major Arcana" by tarot card readers.
- Sun Tzu was a Chinese author of The Art of War, an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy. He is also one of the earliest realists in international relations theory.

Speaking of which, did you know you can use The Power of the Sun to heat water, get a tan, and power your POE Robot?
There's tons of activities happening on campus as we wind down the year. Check out the announcements below to learn more about the Development Office's video contest below, and use the power of photons to win cool prizes! Go to the farewell party for David Soo next week in OSL (we'll miss you!), find where things you lost will now be found, help make games for the One Laptop Per Child project (pong, anyone?), and much much more!
So get out there and enjoy the sun. The SAC Carnival is all day tomorrow, so hop on the bouncy things and listen to the bands! Also, bring lots of corn starch. If enough people bring corn starch, there might even be a pool of non-newtonian fluid. That would be so cool. Seriously. Get Maxtor, flip him over, and fill him up with cornstarch and water. Then jump on it. Oh man.
Warmly,
Greg "The 'Bright' One" Marra
Vice President of Communication

Video Contest
Video isn't possible without the visible light from our sun!
Have you been stifling your movie making talents? We have a unique opportunity for you to put those talents on display and to win a prize at the same time!
The Student Development Working Group and the Development Office are sponsoring a video competition with the theme of “What Olin Means to Me”. Videos can be produced by a team of no more than five Olin students and can be up to five minutes in length. Entries are due to the Development Office by midnight on May 15th. Videos will be screened by a panel of Olin community members and finalists will have their videos shown in the Auditorium on May 16th at 1pm. Audience members will then have the opportunity to select the prize winners.
Why are we doing this?
- We want to hear from students why Olin is important to them and what the Olin scholarship has made possible.
- When we meet with individuals, corporations, and foundations, direct student feedback is critical, and this is a unique way to present the awesome talent of Olin students.
- We need cool web content in the form of video and audio clips and podcasts!
- We think you can all have fun?
- We want to give away cool prizes!

Lost and Found
This is the lost and found we found. We found it in Public Safety.
Hello everyone!
I wanted to announce that our new Lost and Found processes are in place. As of today, any found items should be reported to Public Safety. The item will be held in the Public Safety office in East Hall (near Lot B) and can be identified and collected there. If you have lost an item, please get in touch with Public Safety to see if someone has turned it in. Periodic listings of found items will be listed in the Link and in the Core Digest. If you think that one of the items may be yours, you will be asked to identify it in further detail.
Thanks!!!!!

One Laptop Per Child seeks student volunteers
Help make video games for kids in the developing world at Olin this June 8-10
The biggest experiment in educational technology is coming to the biggest experiment in technology education. That's right, folks - One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), the nonprofit creators of a sub-$100 laptop for children in the developing world, is hosting its inaugural Game Development Jam at Olin College this summer from June 8-10 (Fri-Sun)… and we need your help.
In the span of 48 hours, teams of amateur and professional game developers, artists, musicians, coders, and educators from across the country will be crowding onto Olin's campus to produce games for kids - from scratch. Mesh networking, tablet mode, and cameras are just a few of the hardware features available to play with. All content will be released under an open license on Sourceforge and featured in the Experimental Gameplay Workshop next spring. Added free-time bonus: get the chance to ask OLPC developers questions about a totally sweet piece of hardware (did you know the antennas double as dust shields, the UI has no desktop, and the laptop has no hard drive?)
We're looking for students to help organize the event and for student (and faculty!) teams with software development experience to hack shoulder-to-shoulder with professional game developers in June; long-distance collaboration is also possible. Spread the word to your friends at other schools who might be interested! For more information or to apply, visit
http://hackronym.com/olpc/gamejam or talk to Mel Chua. We'd love to see Olin students, staff, faculty, and alumni get involved!
Environmental Engineering Competition
Brought to you by ASME
The ASME Student Chapter recently became aware of a great opportunity to share your environmental related research:
"The Environmental Engineering Division is prepared to fund the travel and expenses for 10 students who are engaged in environmentally-related college studies to present posters at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) in Seattle, Washington, November 10 - 16, 2007. The Division will have the posters reviewed by an expert panel and select three prizewinners at the conference. The first prize will be $1000 and there will be two honorable mention prizes of $500 each.
Abstracts should be submitted to Martin Edelson (
edelson@krellinst.org) and George Holliday (
ghh@houston.rr.com) electronically before July 31, 2007. Ten students submitting abstracts will be selected by August 15, 2007 and invited by the Division to present their posters at IMECE2007.
To participate, prepare and submit and abstract of up to 400 words. Please list names of participants and affiliations. The format for undergraduate student research papers will be "poster" form."
Fun, Fondue and Fond Memories is coming up!

Join us as we catch up with old and new friends, reminisce fun memories and celebrate Commencement 2007, while indulging in fondue favorites.
A Mother in my Head
Come see this hilarious one-act play directed by Andrew Bouchard. Starring Alex Trazkovich, Heather Casper, Lauren Glanville and Erin Schumacher. $1 for students, $2 for general admission.
Choral Singing
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti
Hello people who love to sing,
We've started a choral group that has enthusiastic singers from Babson and Olin. We have 43 interested singers from both schools, most who will start singing with us in the Fall and some that will sing with us this summer for fun.
This is for students, faculty and staff.
We had our first meeting with our Maestro David Coccia last week to organize and try out a few songs.
We have a few pieces to sing for starters from Cole Porter to the Beatles, fun stuff, and are hoping for new music ideas from everyone singing. There will be opportunities for solos, duets, etc. with choral ensemble.
All music will be donated or borrowed and our conductor has volunteered his talents.
David Coccia plays piano too, but we would love to find an accompanist to help him. Know anyone?
Next rehearsal is May 17th, Thursday 4:30-6:30 at the Babson Chapel.
Bring a 3 ring binder or folder, anything you have, don't buy anything.
If you're interested, let us know. Do join us if you if you are still on campus. Lateness is OK if you have a conflict, or if you have to leave early, also OK.
We're searching for singers to start a group in the Fall. Some of us may continue singing for fun through out the summer.
Musical cheers,
Stephanie
