CORe Digest

April 6th 2007

And just like that, it comes to this. A mere 357 days ago, I released my first Digest, and 29 Digests later, I've reached my last. Before I start getting all teary-eyed, let's get to some fun stuff. As a majority of the GA turns over in the next week or two, CORe's definitely going out with a bang.

CORe's Second-Annual Phoenix Fest promises to keep the strong tradition going. With a mix of tried-and-true events (30 Second Video Competition, Bonfire) and new ones (Eating Competition, Bouncy Stilts, Senior Storytelling), it'll be a welcomed break. Let's take a look at some of the events:

Phoenix Design Challenge 10am - 7pm

Build a crazy RC vehicle, driven by an action figure of your choosing, and race it around an obstacle course in the O. Check below for more info.

Lawn Activities, Boggle, & Quilt-Making 1pm - 2pm

Play in a Boggle tournament in WH, make Quilts in EH, or play with Unicycles, Bouncy-Stilts, Kites, and more on the Great Lawn. This is a great way to preemtively burn off some of the calories you're sure to amass during the ...

Competitive Eating Contest 2pm - 3pm

How many hot dogs can you eat in 15 minutes? (Note: details not yet finalized) Sign up on the wiki if you're feeling brave, or stop on by and cheer on your fellow classmates.

30 Second Video Contest 3pm - 3:30pm

You've got till midnight tonight to polish off your 30-second entries. Drop them off at \\sandbox\Phoenix_Fest_Video_Competition, and be sure to send Stefan an email as well. Check out a couple of entries from last year:

CORe Town Meeting 3:30pm - 4:30

We're eradicating the December CCO Reallocation meeting, giving the Student Body more explicit power to impeach members of the GA and appeal E-Board line item decisions, and other fun stuff. Check out the Amendments section below for more details.

Bonfire 8pm - 11pm

Ah yes, and then there's the Bonfire. We'll get seniors to tell stories, roast marshmellows, and keep warm in the cold April air. Check out a few pictures from last year's Bonfire to see just how huge and awesome it is:

Arright, I've got a couple of quick announcements, before we jump back into CORe stuff ...

Well, I've really gone crazy with this Digest, but what do you expect? It's the last one ... can't hold anything back now ...

Before I bid adieu, I've gotta thank just a few people for making this year on CORe as much fun as it's been. My fellow E-Board members are especially fantastic; Robin, for tackling the big issues and keeping track of all of the little things on notebooks or the back of her hand; Meena, for always getting stuff done (AR!), keeping our meetings on track, and occasionally mispronouncing words or common english sayings; Angela, for keeping clubs in line, sending oodles of emails, and the lip gloss; and Simone, for almost never interrupting me (or anyone, for that matter), but always saying something profound when she did. Angela will be on the GA next year as the Honor Board Vice Chair, and we might be able to rope Simone into representing us again. Also, thanks to everyone who contributed to the Digest this year -- and for the next VPC's sanity's sake, keep using that Submission Form!

It's been great Digest-ing for you this year! And with that, enjoy Phoenix Fest and the rest of the year, don't give the next VPC a hard time, and thanks for reading, listening, and/or skimming :-)

Sincerely,

Chris "Danger" Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

SERV Competition Finale
One last day to contribute to your team's community service hours! The competitions ends TODAY at midnight. You can still record hours through noon on Saturday; bins will be moved from the dining hall to the first floor of each dormitory after 6pm today.

One last event: make coloring books today during community service time, 3-5pm in the West Hall 1st floor lounge. We've got coloring sheets but now we've got to put them together! Punch holes, tie sheets together with yarn, and make decorative covers.

SERV Elections
SERV elections are coming up fast! The election packet is attached; consider running for Chair, Manager of Finance and Records, Director of Committees, or as a General Member. Make a difference and serve the Olin community as well as the external community. Nominate your friends who are perfect for the job by e-mailing SERV@olin.edu (no nomination is needed to run). Packets are due by April 13 at midnight to SERV@olin.edu and elections will happen on April 18 from 11-12pm in the Auditorium. Please feel free to talk to any of the current SERV Board members about their positions or e-mail SERV@olin.edu with questions.

Engineering Discovery Meeting: Kids, engineering, and education
Come to the Dining Hall Mezz during Open Meeting time on Wednesday, April 11th from 12-1pm for a fantastic meeting about Engineering Discovery. Help kick off the program for next year - brainstorm project ideas, become a leader, and learn how to motivate kids to learn math and science!

Interested in the blood drive? Help with signage.
Create and post signs to help direct Red Cross workers to the Crescent Room for the blood drive on April 23rd. This is a very low time commitment opportunity. E-mail Kelcy Adamec if interested.
Phoenix Design Challenge!
The game is simple…
Six steps to having an awesome Saturday and more crazy stories to impress your friends than you ever needed:
  1. Select a ridiculous action figure to be your driver
  2. Show up Saturday in AC 109 at 10:00 am
  3. Grab an pre-made starter chassis for your team (if you desire) or make your own sweet design.
  4. Build a ridiculous RC vehicle in 8 hours
  5. Start your motors, and RC your thing-a-ma-jig around the "O" obstacle course in a grand red-neck-tacular spectacle!!!!
  6. Say "That was EASY!"
Even if you don't participate in the design-build, come watch the fun at 6pm in the O.  See you there!

Local history -- global impact
During World War II, Unitarian Reverend Waitstill Sharp of Wellesley Hills and his wife Martha traveled to Czechoslovakia and France to rescue Jews and dissidents from the Nazis. This 30-minute documentary takes viewers along on the Sharps’ often clandestine World War II rescue missions and provides background on the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

Windows Automatic Update issues

Windows Automatic Update issues
BITS Service repair

It has come to the IT Department’s attention that many systems on Olin's campus, particularly the freshman D620s, have had trouble with Windows Automatic Updates. The problem has manifested itself in a variety of ways including: the system hanging during shutdown for some, and Automatic Updates simply not working at all on other systems.  In most cases, this issue is caused by a failure of the BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) service to start automatically on startup.  We have created a patch to correct the BITS problem such that it starts and allows the system to download available Windows updates.  It's critical that automatic updates work on all systems to ensure that they're protected against discovered vulnerabilities.

We ask that everyone verify whether or not their Windows systems are properly updating and if not, to follow the instructions for correcting the problem.  If after running our patches, you find that your system still isn't updating, please contact the IT Help Desk for additional follow up.

For more information on Windows Automatic Updates, follow this link:

For the details on correcting the BITS problem, follow this link:

As always, we welcome all your feedback.  If you have additional questions, comments or concerns please contact the IT Help Desk.
Wireless networks upgrade status
On Wednesday, March 21st we upgraded our wireless network infrastructure with a new code stream to address issues we had been experiencing.  Unfortunately, we encountered some new issues in the process resulting in connectivity problems for several days.  With the help of feedback from the community, we have identified and corrected all but one of the issues, which appears to be affecting only MAC computers.

The MAC related issue appears to be solely related to a new wireless update released by Apple, which is affecting a large number of MACs regardless of the wireless systems they connect to.  The IT Department recommends that anyone with MAC wireless connectivity issues contact Apple and submit a case to address the problem.  As for other users/systems, we've heard that connectivity and coverage has improved since the upgrade.  If you have any feedback regarding wireless connectivity, please let us know.

Student wanted for on-campus summer research in colloids
Do you want to learn to use the newest, coolest toy on campus:  the confocal microscope?  Do you have interests in chemical engineering, physical chemistry or materials science?  Join me for my summer research!

Colloids (micron sized particles) are ubiquitous in everyday life, biology, and industry and are increasingly finding new and interesting high-tech applications.  While the interactions which govern the behavior of colloidal suspensions are deceptively simple and involve nothing more advanced than freshman physics, the resulting phase behaviors are diverse and of stunning complexity.  I am looking for an enthusiastic student with good lab practices to help me begin confocal microscopy investigations into the structural phases of two colloidal systems:  binary mixtures of charged spheres and suspensions of uniform ellipses.

If you are interested, please send me a CV detailing your previous classwork and lab experience (in or out of the classroom).
