CORe Digest

March 30th 2007

Dear Chris,

Although this is Slovenia, and everything's a bit slower and more laid back than the United States (especially Olin), I think I feel a bit like you will in a few hours. It is presently 0:41 over here, and I will leave to get on a train for Aix En Provence, France in less than an hour, and I'm still not finished packing. But, as you can see, I have my priorities straight, and you're obviously more important than Avery.

Anyway, Slovenia has been a blast. In the past month, I've been to a World Cup ski race where I found out that painting an American flag on your face gets you hugs, wine, and homemade schnapps; the Vienna opera house, where some guys called Mozart and Beethoven once played, a castle in Bratislava that once housed KGB snipers to pick off anyone trying to cross into the west; a hockey game that laughed in the face of fire safety; powder skiing in half a meter (2 feet) of snow in the middle of March (though that was all we had for winter); the final World Cup ski jumping competition, which was advertised as "the biggest Slovenian sports holiday", but was really closer to "the biggest Slovenian drinking holiday"; one hell of a messy beach party; a national European soccer match; numerous poker tournaments; and of course, plenty of parties on all nights of the week to all hours of the night.

I really have to go now, because it's now 1:30, my train leaves in 50 minutes, and it takes half an hour to get to the train station. But before I go, I want to tell you to take a look at the picture I've sent you. These average Slovenians hated George Bush before I got to them, but look at how happy they became once they met a real, live American. You too can be the envy of every Slovenian guy if you paint your face like that and remember these words: Ti si lepa. Greva fukat. Well, I'm off to France, and then I'll be back here for Easter, and then it's off to Belgrade, Sarajevo, and Kosovo. Hope you're having as good a time back at Olin as I am in Slovenia.

Love, Alex Jenko

With that letter from Alex out in Slovenia, my little experiment of incorporating letters from past and present away students has come to a close. I hope you had as much fun with it as I did! Special thanks go out to everyone who contributed:

After this, I've only got one more Digest as CORe's Vice President of Communication! Which means it's election season. If you're interested in Honor Board, hurry up and get your completed application to Nick Tatar by 9am today! If E-Board strikes your fancy, you've got until Tuesday, April 3 to get together a petition, with signatures. For more information, check out the CORe Corner below, and see the March 28 email from CORe.

This is quite a big Digest. Let's get right to it ...

Boy, CORe is busy this time of year, Between elections, writing the Annual Review, changing the CCO process, amending the Constitution, and Senior Week funding, we sure can keep ourselves busy.

David Soo Leaving Olin for Graduate School at UPenn

David Soo, Hall Director and Study Away Coordinator, will be leaving Olin this coming summer. He has been admitted to the prestigious doctoral program in Higher Education Management at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

We are indebted to David for his many contributions to the Olin community. Among them are enhancement of our study away program, his role as the College's immigration officer, oversight of East Hall, work with the Resident Resources (R2s), sponsorship of several Co-Curricular Offerings, coordination of many student gatherings in the OSL suite (e.g., chocolate fondue for Valentine's Day), and membership on several College committees. More important, however, are his support for individual Olin students, his close working relationships with faculty and staff, and his professionalism.

Stay tuned for word on how we plan to show David our appreciation!

New Honor Board Website
Honor Board’s new website is up at honorboard.olin.edu

The Olin College Honor Board is announcing the launch of its new and improved website.  Instead of wrestling with the depths of blackboard, Ilari Shafer, Evan Morikawa, and the rest of the Honor Board are providing Olin with a one-stop portal where for all Honor Board related activities.  With this new website, anyone connected to Olin’s network, including students, faculty and staff, will have access to the following features:

  • A simple 3-step process for either students or faculty to submit a suspected violation of the Honor Code
  • Sample case abstracts for the community’s reference and education
  • Answers to frequently asked questions about the Honor Board and Honor Code
  • Contact information for the Honor Board’s members and other organization information.

Think of it as the one place you can go to clear up hesitations you may have with the Honor Code and the process for submitting a violation.  If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about the website, please feel free to contact Ilari Shafer or Evan Morikawa.

How do you REALLY feel about OSS?
Come tell the Senior Year Task Force!
As part of the curriculum review, the Senior Year Task Force has been looking at the OSS (Olin Self Study). There is a general feeling that OSS projects are often not technically rigorous and that the OSS (as implemented) does not generally provide a capstone Life-Long Learning experience. The Senior Year Task Force would like to get input from students on the OSS. We don't intend on just tweaking the current OSS program - we want to start over, and replace OSS with an engaging, compelling, interesting and rigorous activity for students. What should the OSS be? Is the OSS really broken right now? What could it be replaced with?

To hear more about our ideas, and to share your own comments and opinions, please have lunch with the Senior Year Task Force on Monday, April 2, from 12 - 1 pm, upstairs in the dining hall. For questions, please see David Boy (the task force student representative) or contact anyone on the senior year task force (Jessica Townsend, Sarah Adams, Steve Holt, Dave Barrett, Gillian Epstein).  If you can't make the lunch meeting, but would still like to be heard, please send David Boy any thoughts you have.
Now Hiring Writing Tutors

If you enjoy writing and would like to get paid to help others develop their writing skills, contact Gillian Epstein at gillian.epstein@olin.edu for an application ASAP.

The College page is located under Learn on the home page and provides both information and convenient links to other areas of the website.

A number of events in coming weeks provide an opportunity for students to learn more about the work of curators and conservators. Curator Marietta Cambareri will give a slide talk on Sunday, April 1, at 2 pm, entitled "Materials and Meaning: Uncovering the Secrets of the Italian Renaissance."

If you have questions or suggestions of further ways in which we can be helpful, please contact me at bmartin@mfa.org or 617-369-3307, and I would be delighted to talk with you further.
