CORe Digest
March 9th 2007
G'day y'all! First off, this will definitely be the lastest CORe Digest of my
tenure as VPC. In fact, I didn't even get started until 3:30 ... yay SCOPE!
I'm obviously also OSL's favorite student ...
This last full week before spring break is full of three fun and engaging things
(besides work, of course) ... Awesome Service Opportunities,
how CORe spends your money,
and The State of the College. Let's quickly dive into each one, plus
a little more while we're at it!

- Help SERV bake cookies and other tasty treats
for CityYear volunteers!
Stop by this afternoon at 3pm for the fun.
- Also this weekend, chill with SERV at their Sunday-night party
to talk about community service and eat other delicious delicacies!
- This past week, CORe passed new Club Funding Guidelines
[linky]
which change a few things, including viewing "controversial" items in a new light. Be
sure to check them out and send your feedback to
CORe@olin.edu.
- This upcoming Wednesday presents a couple of marvelous opportunities to take a step
back and ask how Olin's doing. First, at 11am in the auditurion, come hear President
Miller's State of the College Address. Later that night, meet back to discuss
the Honor Board's results of last year's Academic Integrity survey, along with an
amendment.
- Remember to take the Olin Dining
survey
to add your input!
Well, looking at last week's
graph
(not to mention my window), the sun has gotten the upper hand on me this morning.
But don't worry, I'll
get even
at some point ...

- Mini-Minutes! Check out the full
EBoard
and GA?
minutes.
- Steve Hannabury gave a talk about Olin's current financial situation at GA.
- State of the College Address by President Miller to be held next Wednesday during Open Meeting Time. Be there!
- Spending Guidelines Revision Committee went over additional changes made to the CORe Spending Guidelines document.
Document was adopted.
- Further Developments
- SAC: Expresso Black on Tuesday, 4/3 in Dining Hall. Auditions this weekend and next week.
- SAC: Semi-formal at Wellesley free to Olin students this weekend.

Are You Getting Enough Sleep?
This week is National Sleep Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Sleep Foundation in Washington, D.C. This foundation is a great resource for all things sleep-related. Their web site has cool features like assessments and quizzes, blog opportunities, an "ask the expert" section and much more! A sample of the quizzes available include: Sleepiness Diary, Caffeine IQ Quiz, Sleep IQ Quiz, and Snore Score. Check out this page on their website for the assessments and quizzes:
http://www.sleepfoundation.org/site/c.huIXKjM0IxF/b.2418861/k.B1A8/Tools_and_Quizzes.htm
Over the next couple of weeks, you will be seeing some information around campus about sleep-related issues. I will also be giving the R2s some materials that you can access. If you have any questions, feel free to stop by OSL to see me or send me an email. Thanks!

Polished, Poised, and Professional: Putting the Ease in Etiquette
For the Class of 2007
You're in a professional social setting. How do you introduce yourself effectively? How do you juggle a drink and an appetizer plate and still have a hand free for shaking? What should you talk about (and what should you not talk about) at these things anyway?
Winston Jenkins of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting will address these and other questions so you know how to handle professional social events with ease.
When: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at 5:45 p.m.
Where: Woodside Lounge at the Babson Executive Conference Center
Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Business attire required.
Attendance is limited to the first 50 seniors who respond. Look out for an invitation, sent separately, with instructions to RSVP via EASE.
Team Members Sought for Needham Spelling Bee
Attention Olin students: team members are sought for the Needham Spelling Bee, which will take place on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 pm. The Spelling Bee is a popular community event which helps the Needham Education Foundation fund programs in the town's schools. Being part of the Spelling Bee is a great way to contribute to the local community. It's also a lot of fun. The "Bee" is attended by hundreds of supporters, hosted by local media personalities and broadcast on Needham Cable. Olin has the opportunity to field two teams of three students. If you're interested, and are a good speller, please contact Joe Hunter in the Communication office.
