CORe Digest
March 2nd, 2007
Joe writes to us from the faraway land of
Baja, Mexico,
where he's involved in a
semester-long wilderness survival course. As he describes in his letter, they don't
get the chance to send or receive mail too often, but we were lucky! I'm sure we
all wish Joe well ... we sure miss him on the GA (-: This is a fun Digest, so keep
reading ...

- Want to be part of Olin's history? Yearbook Snapshots are due
tomorrow night (March 3) at midnight.
- Bathroom Inspections are next week, so get scrubbing!
- As per Emily's email yesterday, make sure you don't park in tiers 1, 2, or 3
for candidate's weekend.
- Interested in photography? Babson is hosting introductory classes in
B&W Photography on April 7 and April 14. The fee is $50 for Olin students,
staff, and faculty. Contact Kay Sorensen
for more information.
- CORe held a town meeting last week to discuss the use of public resources at Olin
(tools, equipment, kitchens, lounges, etc). We will continue to investigate specific
solutions; feedback is always welcome at
CORe@olin.edu.
What else is on the horizon? Well, in less than 6 weeks, E-board elections will
be upon us! In order to convince my fellow students to step up to the plate for the awesome
job of Vice President of Communication, I took a look back at the past four years of
VPCs. I always end up with Digests coming out in the wee hours of the morning ... I wonder
how Chris, Grant, and Mike did before me?
What you see above is the time of night when the Digest comes out ... looking back four years!
These data are accurate to the minute, for each one of the 100 CORe Digests since the
current Seniors arrived on campus. A special thanks goes out to Simon Helmore for digging
back into his archives to get me that first year of data ... from when I was still in high school.
As you can see, I've been doing an OK good job getting it done before sunrise.
But just think, you could be the first VPC with mad time management skills!
What else is CORe up to?

- Mini-Minutes! Check out the full
EBoard,
GA,
and
Town Meeting
minutes.
- CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Candidates! We're excited to have you here. Good luck!
- The E-Board submitted a recommendation to the Board of Trustees about transitioning BOT committee
student representatives.
- R2s have been selected for coming school year. There are no returning R2s.
- Process of beginning Annual Review has started. AR Writing Committees were populated at last
night's General Assembly.
- Spending Guidelines Revision Committee facilitated discussion about changes to the current
Spending Guidelines document.
- A new Budget Process document was approved.
- Further Developments
- Bonfire and related permitting are in the process of being obtained for Phoenix Fest events.
- IT is working on mailing lists for residence halls, the General Assembly, and class representatives.
- To think about:
- How to fund student/staff lunches by DeltaCORe in a sustainable manner?
- How should we revise the Spending Guidelines document? Talk to a CORe Rep, club president, or
join the CORe Discussion
mailing list for more information!

SWE hosts an evening with Alumni, Faculty, Staff and you!
SWE will be hosting a social evening with Olin alumni, faculty, staff and current students to discuss life after graduation. Specific topics include what can be done with an engineering degree, what influence gender balance has on current work or student life, what the alumni wish they knew a year ago, and much more! This is an opportunity for alumni to catch up with students and faculty, talk with current seniors about their upcoming career decisions, and meet the new freshman, who can finally put faces to the stories they hear. We currently have ~10 alumni definitely attending! This will be held from 7-9 pm in the 1st floor lounge of EH on Wednesday, March 7th. We look forward to seeing you there!
Two fabulously sweet SERV events
SERV Social and baking care packages
Bake care packages for CityYear Volunteers: Friday, March 9th, 3-5PM; EH Kitchen
Come join us to bake tasty cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and other delectable creations for CityYear volunteers. CityYear volunteers dedicate a year of their life to volunteering in the community [Olin students Alex Dorsk, Steve Westwood, and Sa'am Oliver participated as CityYear volunteers and CityYear's co-founder visited in 2005 for Big Conversations]. We'll be cheering up these wonderful people with home baked goods on Friday, March 9th during community service time. Supplies and recipes will be out on Thursday, so feel free to bake whenever your schedule permits for these wonderful people.
SERV Social: A Party with a Purpose: Sunday, March 11th, 9-11pm; WH 1st Floor Lounge
SERV is sponsoring another fabulous party to gather your opinions and thoughts. Come on Sunday, March 11th to the WH 1st Floor Lounge for scintillating conversations about community service at Olin and for tasty treats! I promise that there will be home baked goodness…
Also, please remember to fulfill your SERV Auction donations - donors should contact their buyers.
FWOP Presents: "The Importance of Being Earnest"
Written by Oscar Wilde, Directed by Jon Cass
The Franklin W. Olin Players will present Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of chaos in upper-class England, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” February 23-24 and March 2-3 at 8 PM. That means this weekend is your last chance! Directed by Jon Cass, a member of the Class of 2008 at Olin College, the performances will take place at Babson’s Sorenson Theater.
The play tells the story of Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing, who take the pseudonym of Earnest to enjoy a risk-free break from their normal lives. Little did they know that they would fall in love with women who loved them as much for their name as anything else. Contact Andrew Bouchard at andrew.bouchard@students.olin.edu for more information.
FILM--Trust Me: Shalom, Salaam, Peace
Part of OSL's ongoing diversity series
Watch this short documentary that follows middle school students through a week of summer camp. The students are Jewish, Christian, and Muslim, and they discover the stereotypes and misunderstandings they had going in were easy to overcome. What lessons can society take from this simple story? Are there lessons for us at Olin?
Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30pm | WH 1st floor lounge
New Fulbright opportunity: The Power of Music Globally
The Fulbright Commission has just announced a new grant opportunity
for graduating seniors -- travel somewhere abroad to learn about "the
power of music" and report back on it to colleges in the US through
creative means such as blogs, vlogs, etc.. See
https://us.fulbrightonline.org/thinking_mtv.html. Deadline is at the end of
March. If interested, contact Caitrin. This will require a serious
few weeks of work to prep the application.
