CORe Digest
February 9th 2007
Thanks Ray ... I never knew. That whole time in Scotland ... did anyone else know
he had a thing for me? Oh well, now all I can do is ponder what can never be ...
But seriously though, what's up, students of Olin College? I'll tell you what's up ...
kitchens, fridges, and common space! While there were more details in my email
from yesterday afternoon, the truth is out ... there is a
tragedy
unfolding right before our eyes. The tough part, too, is that this doesn't
just affect the kitchens; our community has also had a tough time in the past
with toolboxes, stockrooms, printing, lounges, etc. Look for a bit of community discussion
on this point materializing over the next few weeks -- the last thing any of
us wants is Olin getting any more bureaucratic or less free.
If you have any ideas or want to be a part of the discussion, email
core@olin.edu!
But back to a more cheerful mood ...

Can I get a "C"!
Can I get an "O"!
Can I get an "R"!
can i get an "e"! ...

Announcing the winners of the Room Superlatives Contest!
The Yearbook would like to thank all those who entered the contest, as well as Mike Maloney for photographing and judging the contest. The winners are:
Most Creative Use of Space, Bryce Lee and Marco Morales - Sandbox Beach Team - I wonder if it is a good place to get a tan in the winter?
Neatest (Women's), Cathy Murphie - Cleanest as well
Neatest (Men's), Jeffrey Moore and Bradley Powers
Messiest, Alex Davis, Conor Frackleton, Jeremy Freeman, George Jemmott, Eugene Kozlenko, and Olek Lorenc - DO NOT SHOW ANYONE anytime ever. If someone complains you have a messy room show this. What scared me about this room is they cleaned up before I took photos!
Most Girly, Pamela Darvirris and Sarah Zimmermann - Great color use even down to the fish.
Most Manly, Luis Diego Cabezas - If you are a man, this is the room you show friends, job interviews, girlfriends, and your mother.
Most Olin-esque, Kevin Bretney, Eamon Doyle, Clark McPheeters, and Aisaku Pradhan - Work Hard, Play Hard. Best work space, for teams and individuals, best home theatre. These two rooms say Olin; too bad they did not have a fire pole between them. (No, you can’t do it.)
Most Inviting (Men's), Matt Crawford and Matthew Roy - Only if you do not look at the ROC poster.
Most Inviting (Women's), Tiana Veldwisch
Most Colorful, Caitlin Greeley and Joan Liu
Best Painted, a tie between Gavin Boggs and Jonathan Raphael and Kiralyse Gonzalez and Alyshia Olsen - These students will always have a job.
Biggest Waste of Electricity, Matthew Wootton - Loudest, most toys. This is the room not to be next to, above, or below!
The Vagina Monologues
Come support the 3rd Annual Babson-Olin Production!
The Vagina Monologues is a racy show that discusses taboo subjects in an engaging manner. All proceeds are donated towards efforts to fight violence against women, as part of V-Day, a global campaign to this end.
Directed by our own Laura Stupin this year, the show will be presented by Babson and Olin College in collaboration with the Coalition for Women's Rights and Sexuality.
The Olin faction of this year's cast includes Martina Balestra, Casey Canfield, Heather Casper, Lauren Hafford, Anahita Karimi, Tiana Veldwisch and Meena Vembusubramanian.
Tickets: $8 at the door, and $6 for students.
Where: Carling-Sorenson Theater at Babson College
When: 8:00pm - 10:00pm, Friday, February 16th

Ultimate Frisbee UPA Team Meeting – Friday Feb. 9th 7 PM, Dining Hall
The Flying Franks are at it again this season, so, if you are interested in playing competitive Ultimate Frisbee in the spring, come to this informational meeting. We will talk about UPA registration, practice times, games, and the year-end tournament.

Where's That Baby?
Participate in the first FWOP publicity game and win prizes!
In anticipation of FWOP's upcoming production of "The Importance of Being Earnest," during both Candidates' Weekends, the best theater group on campus will be holding a competition with elements related to the play. Baby John Moncrieff is missing somewhere in Boston, close to a T stop. Your task is to find him and return him to Olin College unharmed. In order to find him, you will be given challenges, which when completed will give you clues to his location, and the tools that you need to free him. Prizes will be awarded in three categories:
$50 for the first team to find Baby John
$25 for the team that completes the most challenges
Free show tickets for the most creative team
Rules have been attached, and the competition will take place from 8 PM Friday, February 16 until 8 PM Saturday, February 17. Please gather a team of four or five people if you want to participate, and e-mail me before next Friday.
2010 Imperative: webcast and discussion
How can we make ecological literacy a central tenet of design education?
The 2010 Imperative is an interactive web-cast broadcast live from New York, reaching more than 500,000 students, faculty, deans and practicing professionals in the architecture, planning and design communities in both North and South America. The organization behind this is working to make ecological literacy a central tenet of design education.
A group of us will be watching the broadcast in AC428 from noon to 3:30pm on Tuesday, Feb. 20 (an Olin Monday). Speakers include Dr. James Hansen (international expert on global warming), Edward Mazria (founder of Architecture 2030), Chris Luebkeman (Director and leader of Arup’s global Foresight and Innovation initiative, senior fellow of the Design Futures Council), and Susan Szenasy (editor-in-chief of Metropolis magazine). Grab your lunch and join us - in addition to watching the webcast we'll be having our own discussions on how Olin can build awareness of global and environmental concerns into its own activities and curricula.
If you'd like to watch but can't make this time, email us - we're trying to put together an evening showing for those who have class during the day. Full details are available on the 2010 Imperative website.

Olin College to Hold Art Exhibition Reception February 22
Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering will hold the opening reception for a solo art exhibition of the work of Erica Daborn on February 22, 2007, from 5-7 PM. The exhibition, entitled “Interplay: A Painter’s Dialog with Photography,” will be on view from February 22 through March 31. The reception will be held in the Olin Art Gallery, which is located on the first floor of the Olin Center at Olin College, Olin Way, in Needham. Gallery hours are Mon - Fri. 9 AM - 5 PM, Sat. and Sun. 9 AM - 5 PM. For directions to the gallery go to
www.Olin.edu/camput/getting_around.asp.
Ms. Daborn’s work featured in this exhibition integrates photographic imagery with drawing. As Ms. Daborn comments, “Central to this work is the idea of transformation. Narrative themes and forms of coded representation combine the formal and technical with the theatrical. The drawings’ art relies on the imaginative potential and the liberating interplay of documentary imagery and fantasy. The characters, patterns, buildings and landscapes employed as participants in these dramas do not refer directly to any one cultural source but rather to many sources, creating a catalyst or reservoir of possible meanings that, for the viewer, can unravel many discursive journeys.”
Educated at the Royal College of Art in London (MFA), Ms. Daborn now lives in the Boston area and is a full-time member of the drawing faculty at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and in the UK and her work is held in many prominent public collections including The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, The Boston Public Library, The Boston Center for the Arts and the Contemporary Art Society for Wales.
