CORe Digest
February 2nd, 2007
Next in our extensive lineup of great thinkers coming back from a semester abroad
is Ryan Hubbard, who now speaks a bit of Italian! I'm sure he's getting back into
the Olin swing of things ... busy, busy, busy. By this point in the semester, you
should have a pretty good idea what's gonna p0wn you this semester. But just in
case you somehow managed to escape your first week-and-a-half at Olin with some
free time remaining, I've got plenty of great stuff to fix that problem!

- As 3/4s of us know, our great mailman of the past, Paul Foscaldo, left Olin
last year. As a special parting gift for him, CORe has purchased a mailbox.
We hope to fill this mailbox with many of the good memories Paul left us with,
such as puzzles, jokes, trivia, and other notes. Stop by the EH 1st floor today
and drop in a note!
- Send in your feedback for this semester's committee nominees ...
- Great opportunities abound, like
FIRST volunteering,
becoming an R2,
mathematics researching,
cleaning basements and attics,
and the loads upon loads of summer jobs & careers!
Of course, CORe always keeps itself busy ...

- Mini-Minutes! Check out the full
EBoard
and
GA
minutes [not yet live].
- Joanne Kossuth gave an informative talk about fundraising at Olin
- BE THERE: Charlie Nolan will be at next week's GA meeting
[iCal]
- State of the College address during Open Meeting Time on 3/14
- SAC: Variety show will be held for Candidate's Weekend
- SAC: Valentine's flower selling this week, Super Bowl party this weekend
- To think about:
- Should student employment be funded by the SAF for clubs activities?
- What if CORe stopped funding club transportation in general but applied it on
a case-by-case basis?
- Further Developments:
- Phoenix Fest being considered for this year
- Olin’s 10th birthday coming up on 11/18
- Room draw to be held around 5/3
- Line Items:
- FWOP: $550 [GA] - Set Pieces, Props, Costumes, etc
- FILM: $100 [EB] - Food for Semester
- Greening Olin: $60 [EB] - Bike Locks, Tire Tubes
- FWOP: $50, post facto [EB] - Prop
- Christian Club: $40 [EB] - Bible Study Books
- OTASA: $40 [EB] - Conference Registration (x2)
- Friendly Fire: $20 [EB] - Supplies (bin, cords, etc)

And now, for your viewing pleasure, check out this upcoming week's CORe Calendar!
You now have no excuse not to know about what's going on around campus.
Let me take a moment to \begin{enumerate} the ways you have access to the calendar ...
- Get it, as always, through the CORe Public Calendar in Outlook
(how?)
- Use Google Calendar instead? Check out this simple
Agenda
view!
- Use the PhoenixNet Olin Portal? Look for the
CORe Calendar on there, as well!
- Last, but not least, of course, I'll continue to include all the important stuff
right here in the Digest.

Poke me
and let me know.
Have a fantastic week, my fellow Oliners!
Sincerely,
Chris "Danger" Dellin

Coloring Books and a SERV Auction thank you
Ophelia Dahl, and coloring books!
Make Coloring Books TODAY, 3-5PM, WH 1st floor lounge
Come get your art groove on and help make coloring books for the Boston Children's Hospital. Help sketch coloring pages and compile the pages into beautiful booklets that will brighten a child's day. Hone your drawing and writing skills, hole punching skills, copying skills, and become a kid again! (No talent necessary; you can make coloring book covers that say 'Coloring Book' and a kid will love it.) Drop by February 2nd, from 3-5PM to the WH 1st floor lounge - we'll be having tons of fun.
SERV Auction Thank You and a Reminder
Please fulfill your SERV Auction donations as soon as possible - donors are responsible for contacting their winners. As you are doing so (and thank you to those who already have), whether you're cleaning and folding Traz's underwear or taking all of Man Hall on a date, remember the amazing impact that the money raised will have. Here's an excerpt from a thank you note from Ophelia Dahl, executive director at PIH, herself:
"…This [donation] will help PIH enormously with the work we are doing now especially as we expand to Malawi this year. When Ed and I came to Olin we were just beginning our efforts in Rwanda. Since then we have begun a program in Lesotho and are about to launch in Malawi and perhaps another country in Africa next year. Thank you so much for your continued thoughtful fundraising on behalf of PIH and our patients. It means a great deal all of us….
Best wishes,
Ophelia"
MIT Seminar: Using Computing Technologies to Face the Challenges of Autism
In the Fall of 1999, my wife and I learned that our son, Aidan, age 2, had been diagnosed with autism. In the summer of 2003, our second son, Blaise, was also diagnosed with autism, at the age of 3. [Since then,] I have looked for ways to have my research in ubiquitous computing address the challenges of those impacted by autism. My goal is not to use technology to "cure" autism, but to have it play a vital role in increasing our understanding of that unique human condition and to have it ease the everyday struggles for those who deal with it. In this talk, I will give an overview of the research trajectory of a growing community of GVU researchers who are using this real-world health challenge to drive a human-centered research agenda.

Have you ever wondered if you would graduate?
You're not alone, in part because the current audit system needs some love -- maybe from YOU.
We're looking for two students to work with the Engineering Program Group and the AHS group on improving the current audit system This is a "giving back to Olin" opportunity involving a needs assessment and design for the degree audit process. UOCD or similar experience a prerequisite; HFID a plus. No software background is required. This project could involve two students and is available for pay or for credit. If you're interested, please contact Mark Somerville or Lynn Stein.
Seeking First Regional Volunteers
MMmm..Robots
First Regional Volunteers Needed
A message from Mikell Taylor '06, robot extraordinaire:
I’m still working on the Boston FIRST Regional Planning Committee. Last year Olin had an impressive showing of volunteers at the Regional event over spring break; this year I’d like to see that happen again. This year’s competition, 22-24 March at the BU hockey arena, is going to be REALLY awesome, so we need some really awesome volunteers! Assignments range from technical (robot inspector, rookie team assistant, match video database supervisor) to game-based (referee, field reset, safety inspector) to people-based (team queuing, crowd control, pit administration). Volunteers can work one, two, or all three days and will receive a lovely t-shirt and two meals a day (breakfast + lunch) for their troubles.
Professors, staff, and associated family members are welcome to volunteer as well! Any children who would like to help must be over 15, or must be working with a parent at all times.
Come for the warm fuzzy volunteerism, stay for the Woz signing your iPod (or Helen Greiner signing your Roomba – whatever floats your boat).
Celebrate International Week
Join in the festivities next week!
Olin College will be celebrating International Week next week. Please keep your eyes out for interesting and informative displays outside of the dining hall, and mark your calendars for these nighttime festivities.

IEEE Xplore: Learn, Network & Eat Some Pizza!
When: Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, 3-5pm
Where: AC113
RSVP: Kristen Fitzpatrick (k.fitzpatrick@ieee.org) by Feb. 9
More Info: http://ieee.olin.edu/xplore.pdf
The Olin Library has arranged for a unique event on Olin's campus. A representative from IEEE will be visiting Olin to talk about the research tools available to the student body offered by IEEE. These tools can be used for more than just research... Come and discover the variety of ways you can leverage these tools to their fullest.
Here is the basic agenda of the visit:
- Learn how the IEEE Xplore digital library can expedite your research -- it's full text!
- Discover how IEEE Xplore can target employers in your specific field
- Use IEEE Xplore to make an impression in an interview
- Network with faculty, fellow students, library colleagues and IEEE staff
Also, if you wish to be a member of the Olin IEEE mailing list, e-mail scott@students.olin.edu to be added! Dinner with CSTB - February 20 7:00-8:00pm, Dining Hall
Of course, what could substitute a transfer from being bored?
Thinking of spending a semester away? Taking a nifty summer course? What of that special BBW course that will make your curricular design your own? The CSTB (Course Substitution and Transfer Board) will have a general question and answer session on February 20 from 6:00-7:00pm in the upstairs section of the dining hall. David Soo and I will be there to answer any and all CSTB questions, and outline how the process works.
Announcing the first Completely Different!
Did you do something cool over winter break? Maybe during first semester? Perhaps while on summer break? Olin kids do tons of cool stuff, but only some of it gets shown off during Expo or Expresso.
The point of Completely Different is to be an informal opportunity to share something neat you have done. Whether it is building a bipedal robot, starting your own company, or just learning how to play guitar, come show us! Each person will be limited to about 5-7 minutes to make sure we can fit everyone into the hour, but if someone talks about something you think is really neat, talk to them afterwards and find out more!
The actual show-and-telling will be on Next Tuesday, February 6th, from 8-9pm in the Auditorium. Come check out what everyone else has been up to! I bet you will find out something cool you didn't know was happening. Bring your friends and come listen!
If you want to talk at the historic first Completely Different, e-mail Greg Marra with a one paragraph summary of what you'll be sharing. We may not be able to fit everyone's cool stories in, but you can always talk about it at the next Completely Different - hopefully they will become monthly!
OSA: Flash Conference
Come join Olin OSA in launching Olin's first-ever Flash Conference! In just a few hours, from 10 am to 5:30pm this Sunday, you'll go from learning about the water problems in Madudu, a Ugandan Village visited by Ben Salinas over winter break, to coming up with a comprehensive plan to help alleviate their problems. If you've ever wanted to help, but just didn't have the time, this is the place to do it!
And what's more, after we're done you can still go see the Super Bowl!
For more information, or to register, e-mail Ben Salinas.
R2 Applications
R2 applications will be handed out by current R2s on Feb 6th, 7th, and 9th. Attend one of the information sessions to hear a presentation from current R2s and to ask questions. Applications will be distributed at this time only. Contact the Office of Student Life if you are unable to attend one of these sessions.

Part of Fast-Growing Company?
Get your name on a list of fastest-growing companies …
For the first time, Inc. is encouraging all independent, U.S.-based, privately held companies to fill out qualification forms for the Inc. 5,000, even though many may not yet be eligible for the list. "We want to make sure all growing private companies are on our radar screen," said Inc. 5,000 Project Manager Jim Melloan.
Attached is a news release from INC Magazine calling for entries for its list of the fastest growing companies. Although they focus on companies that have several years of revenue figures, they do make allowances for younger companies that might make the list in the future. So, there might be students or alumni whose ventures would eventually qualify.
