CORe Digest

December 8th 2006

My Fellow Students,

Woooo! We're accredited! Join the Facebook group to register your happiness!

I'd like to take this opportunity to plug two great events coming up in the next few days. First, take a break from finals, projects, and papers today at 3pm to help SERV make coloring books for the Boston Children's Hospital. Stop on by in the WH 1st floor lounge ... can't beat that! I've provided one possibility for a coloring book, just to get you thinking ...

Then, after the comma and a couple days, you'll find a figure skater. This Sunday, Olin's own Figure Skating Team will be performing in the Babson Skating Club Annual Winter Show! Our team is very strong this year, led by captain Carmelle Tsai. (In fact, she's so good, she is the Olin College Figure Skating Team!) So stop on by to the Babson Skating Center, right through the trees from Lot A, Sunday evening at 5PM for the show. There will also be local skaters of all ages performing ... and it's free!

And, with that, let's get to some info ...

Call for Interest: Possible Ecumenical Spring Co-Curricular on Passover
The Passover Seder is the single most observed Jewish celebration of the year.  Culturally, it plays a role similar to Christmas.  At the same time, the Passover Seder celebrates universal themes:  freedom, spring, rebirth.  It is on the one hand a text-based holiday with a long history and broad set of traditions and on the other an extremely malleable set of observances centered on a story and a meal.  All of these things have made it a singularly effective bridge to other groups:  "Freedom Seders," "Feminist Seders", and "Study Seders" are only a few examples.

I am interested in putting together an Olin co-curricular for this spring on Passover, exploring some of its history and themes and also using it as a platform for broader cross-cultural discussion.  I am specifically interested in participation from both those who are not Jewish as well as those who celebrate Passover.  If there is sufficient energy, the co-curricular might consider hosting a (creative?) Passover Seder for the Olin community.

At this point, I am VERY interested in identifying others in the Olin community -- students, staff, and faculty members -- who might be interested in helping me to plan such an activity.  If you would be interested, please let me know ASAP as the co-curricular proposal is due on Monday.  (Planning doesn't need to happen before Monday, of course, but I'd like to know whether there's interest out there.)  I'd also love to hear from anyone who might be interested in participating without necessarily taking on a leadership role and, of course, general feedback and suggestions are always welcome.
Design Nature Toy Demonstration - Monday 12/11
On Monday, December 11th from 11:15 to 12:45 Design Nature students will be demonstrating their toy prototypes in the first floor hallway of the Academic Center. This semester, students were challenged to develop bio- inspired walkers for 4th graders. Accordingly seventy 4th grade students from Hillside Elementary School in Needham will be present to evaluate their designs and experience Olin. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
Princeton Review Survey - Deadline 12/8
The Princeton Review is giving you the opportunity to voice your opinions of the academic and social life at Olin. This information will be used as part of the 2008 Best 361 Colleges. Please complete the online survey at http://survey.review.com/. All undergraduates completing and validating a survey will be entered into the "$5,000 for Your Thoughts" Sweepstakes, with a grand prize of $5,000! (Official sweepstakes rules may be viewed at the survey website.) Please complete your survey within the next three days.

The "Students Say" profiles that appear on PrincetonReview.com and in our books will be based on survey responses from students like yourself. This text helps readers understand what life at your school is like, assisting potential students to match themselves with the school most suited to their educational and personal needs.

Please note: We seemed to have worked out some of the problems students were initially experiencing, but please feel free to email alyson.goodrow@olin.edu with questions.
