CORe Digest
December 8th 2006
My Fellow Students,
Woooo! We're accredited! Join the
Facebook group
to register your happiness!
I'd like to take this opportunity to plug two great events coming up in the next
few days. First, take a break from finals, projects, and papers
today at 3pm to help SERV make coloring books for
the Boston Children's Hospital. Stop on by in the WH 1st floor lounge ...
can't beat that! I've provided one possibility for a coloring book, just to
get you thinking ...
Then, after the comma and a couple days, you'll find a figure skater. This Sunday, Olin's
own Figure Skating Team will be performing in the
Babson Skating Club Annual Winter Show! Our team is very strong this year,
led by captain Carmelle Tsai. (In fact, she's so good, she is the Olin
College Figure Skating Team!) So stop on by to the Babson Skating Center,
right through the trees from Lot A, Sunday evening at 5PM for the show.
There will also be local skaters of all ages performing ... and it's free!
And, with that, let's get to some info ...

Deadline Today:
- Buy your Snowball tickets from one of the lovely ladies
(or gentlemen?) at the dining hall!
- For everyone living in East Hall, take a couple minutes to ensure that
Facilities can get to your air filter today. They'll be starting at 9am.
- If you haven't given your Expo poster/presentation a title, go on over
to the wiki
and sign up.
Also:
- Mini Add/Drop opens today at noon.
- Help out the Princeton Review's blurb about Olin by taking their
survey.
- Live in East Hall or a member of the Class of 2008? Consider running
to represent your Hall or Class! Elections will be held immediately
after break.
- Don't forget to buy stuff for that special someone! Oh, and your
Secret Santa buddy too ;-)

- Mini-Minutes! Check out the full
EBoard
and
GA
minutes.
- Getting Students on Board of Trustees Committees: should they
be ex-officio responsibilities of E-Board members, or should they be
selected from the student body?
- Elections for new EH Area Rep, Co2008 Rep scheduled for Thursday,
January 25, starting at 9pm.
- Gift Committee got some shiny, nice jars engraved with the Olin
Logo!
- The gears are rolling on the new Wellesley-Olin Certificate program.
- Olin is looking to replace the current taxi service to Wellesley
with a contracted shuttle, which will run every half hour.
Currently, the plan is that each ride will cost $1. CORe may be asked
to pay for a portion of the shuttle, for next semester only.
- We're probably going to be revamping CORe's spending guidelines!
Food for thought:
- Should we fund 50% of ticket costs? 50% of transportation?
What about plane tickets and conferences?
- Should CORe treat every funding request on a case-by-case basis, entirely
subjectively? Or should we have more objective rules?
- Should CORe encourage on-campus events at the expense of
off-campus events? Big events at the expense of small? Cheap
purchases at the expense of pricy ones?
Ideas? Send your feedback to CORe.
- Line Items:
- Taboo: $150 [EB] - Fund-raising Event Food (loan)
- ASME: $134.66 [GA] - Conference Food (post facto)
- Chinese Club: $125 [EB] - Food at Cultural Study Break
- Game Club: $85 [EB] - Magic Cards
- FWOP: $50 [EB] - Poster Frame
- FWOP: $44.91 [EB] - Play Scripts (post facto)

Remember, check out the

in Outlook for more information about any of these upcoming activities!

Greening Olin tip of the week
Gas prices are on the rise again, and we all know that car exhaust contains greenhouse gases etc. etc. So, help save money and the environment by walking, biking, or organizing carpools whenever possible.

Make Coloring Books today, 3-5PM, WH 1st floor lounge
SERV presents at artsy study break. Come help make coloring books for the Boston Children's Hospital. Help sketch coloring pages, and compile the pages into beautiful booklets that will brighten a child's day. Hone your drawing skills, hole punching skills, copying skills, and become a kid again! Come by today, December 8th, from 3-5PM to the WH 1st floor lounge. Stay for as long or as little as your want.
Toys for Tots Shopping Trip, Saturday and Sunday afternoon
SERV is making two shopping trips to Natick, Saturday leaving at 1PM and Sunday leaving at 2PM. Meet in WH's 1st floor antelounge. Go do your holiday shopping and buy a toy for Toys for Tots, an organization that gives toys to disadvantaged children during the holiday season. This is a perfect opportunity to frolic in a toy store again! Want to go? RSVP to
SERV@olin.edu
SERV Auction Payments
TODAY is the last chance to pay for your awesome items in the dining hall during lunch. Bring cash (we will have change) or checks written out to 'Olin College'. After today, send payments in campus mail to Jessie Sullivan, MB 586, or go by her room, EH309 to drop off payments in the folder. Payments are due by next Friday, December 15th, so we can send the money to the charities before we leave for break.
"Favorite Poem Video" Project Premiere
What do Joe Hunter, Mel Chua, and David Ware have in common? They are three of the five Olin Community members featured in Creative Writing's Favorite Poem Video Project. The Premiere is open to the community. Monday, December 11 from 4-4:30 in AC 109.
Call for Interest: Possible Ecumenical Spring Co-Curricular on Passover
The Passover Seder is the single most observed Jewish celebration of the year. Culturally, it plays a role similar to Christmas. At the same time, the Passover Seder celebrates universal themes: freedom, spring, rebirth. It is on the one hand a text-based holiday with a long history and broad set of traditions and on the other an extremely malleable set of observances centered on a story and a meal. All of these things have made it a singularly effective bridge to other groups: "Freedom Seders," "Feminist Seders", and "Study Seders" are only a few examples.
I am interested in putting together an Olin co-curricular for this spring on Passover, exploring some of its history and themes and also using it as a platform for broader cross-cultural discussion. I am specifically interested in participation from both those who are not Jewish as well as those who celebrate Passover. If there is sufficient energy, the co-curricular might consider hosting a (creative?) Passover Seder for the Olin community.
At this point, I am VERY interested in identifying others in the Olin community -- students, staff, and faculty members -- who might be interested in helping me to plan such an activity. If you would be interested, please let me know ASAP as the co-curricular proposal is due on Monday. (Planning doesn't need to happen before Monday, of course, but I'd like to know whether there's interest out there.) I'd also love to hear from anyone who might be interested in participating without necessarily taking on a leadership role and, of course, general feedback and suggestions are always welcome.
Design Nature Toy Demonstration - Monday 12/11
On Monday, December 11th from 11:15 to 12:45 Design Nature students will be demonstrating their toy prototypes in the first floor hallway of the Academic Center. This semester, students were challenged to develop bio- inspired walkers for 4th graders. Accordingly seventy 4th grade students from Hillside Elementary School in Needham will be present to evaluate their designs and experience Olin. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
Princeton Review Survey - Deadline 12/8
The Princeton Review is giving you the opportunity to voice your opinions of the academic and social life at Olin. This information will be used as part of the 2008 Best 361 Colleges. Please complete the online survey at
http://survey.review.com/. All undergraduates completing and validating a survey will be entered into the "$5,000 for Your Thoughts" Sweepstakes, with a grand prize of $5,000! (Official sweepstakes rules may be viewed at the survey website.) Please complete your survey within the next three days.
The "Students Say" profiles that appear on PrincetonReview.com and in our books will be based on survey responses from students like yourself. This text helps readers understand what life at your school is like, assisting potential students to match themselves with the school most suited to their educational and personal needs.
Please note: We seemed to have worked out some of the problems students were initially experiencing, but please feel free to email
alyson.goodrow@olin.edu with questions.
