CORe Digest

December 1st, 2006

My Fellow Students,

Good Friday morning to everyone! If you want to get right to the real information, feel free to skip right down to the Information heading. However, CORe's very own Meena Vembusubramanian has decided to part ways with one of her favorite fuzzy friends. Bunny is full of love, and is looking for a new home.

Bunny has been known to squeak when squeezed, and loves long walks on the beach, pumpkins, and boxed wines. If you're interested in setting up a meeting, send Meena a note.

Greening Olin tip of the week
We have reached that point in the semester when many of us are working in the AC at late hours.  But before you head back to the dorms, remember to turn off the lights!  A lot of energy is wasted by lights that stay on all night in the AC when no one is using them.
CWe Interviewer Selection Committee Appointments
CORe is pleased to announce that the following students have been appointed to this committee with an obscenely long name:

Martina Balestra ('10)
Tiana Veldwisch ('08)
Anthony Roldan ('08)
Conor Frackleton ('08)

These students will work with Kerin O'Toole ('08) and Leslie Velez ('09) to design and implement a process to select students to serve as part of the interview teams for the 2007 Candidate's Weekends.

Thanks to everyone that volunteered, nominated, or offered feedback.
Audition for the FWOP show "The Importance of Being Earnest"
FWOP's spring show is The Importance of Being Earnest, and it will be going up on February 23rd-24th and March 2nd-3rd (Candidates' Weekends).

If you are interested in auditioning, send an email to Erin Schumacher and Jon Cass (erin.schumacher@students.olin.edu and jonathan.cass@students.olin.edu) and then come to auditions, which will be held on Saturday, December 9th from 6:00 to 10:00 PM in the crescent room.  In your email, please specify a one-hour time slot in which you would like to audition.  If you are interested in auditioning but are for some reason unavailable at that time, also send us an email and we will work something out.  Callbacks will be held as necessary on Sunday, December 10th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM in the crescent room.
STD Testing!
Are you sexually active? Have you been tested recently?
If the answers to those questions are yes and no, in that order, you should get tested for STDs!  Join Taboo for an outing to a clinic on Wednesday, December 6th.

The HealthQuarters clinic in Beverly, MA (a little under an hour from here) is holding a special private clinic day on Wednesday just for Olin students! It will be pretty inexpensive - about $25 if you don't work full time - and will be easy and fun! You can get tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and other STDs if you choose. Most tests are simple urine tests or swabs, so it should be easy. We're getting the paperwork ahead of time so you can fill it out before you get there to save time.

They are open from 8:30am to 3:30pm, and you can go anytime during then (you appointment should take about 20 minutes).

To coordinate rides, we're putting up this wiki: http://mrwiki.olin.edu/mrwiki/TabooWiki/STD_Outing. As a club, we are interested in decreasing the stigma associated with getting STD testing, so we encourage you to sign up on the wiki. If you're not comfortable with that, you can simply email the driver you want to go with and ask them to hold you a spot. Count on the trip taking about 3-4 hours start to finish if you're going with a group of three or four. You can then pick up a packet of paperwork from the folder outside my door (EH 320) or Paul Mandel's door (WH 301).

If you can't make it this time, we'll be doing it again in the spring. If you don't want to go with us, don't want to go to Beverly, or can't afford it, there is a free walk-in clinic at Mass General Hospital. http://www.mgh.harvard.edu/id/clinical_practice/std_clinic/

If you have questions or want more info, please email Tiana.
Reminder - Academic Integrity Survey
This is a reminder for Olin students to take the academic integrity survey if you have not already done so. The survey will be open through Friday, December 8. The goal of the survey is to find out how we are really doing as an institution in terms of academic integrity. The link to the survey can be found in emails sent out last Tuesday by Nick Tatar and Honor Board.

If you have any questions about the survey, please direct them to honorboard@olin.edu

Needham Women's Club Halloween Fest
Remember the Haunted Labyrinth? Needham Women's Club is looking for an Olin student to help plan their Halloween activities for next year. They are thinking of doing things such as face painting, hay rides, labyrinths and more right here on Olin's campus. This would be a low commitment activity for next semester. Student volunteers would be able to help determine, plan, and organize these events. By doing some planning next semester, everything can be squared away before summer break. If interested in learning more or volunteering, email SERV@olin.edu.

Deliver goody bags to seniors!
The Needham Community Council needs volunteers with cars to drop off Senior Helping Bags to senior citizens in Needham. These bags are delivered around the holidays to cheer up those far from family and friends. All the job requires is a friendly face willing to brighten another's day. Delivery hours are very flexible. If you are interested, call Sandra Johnson at 781.444.2415 and let her know you are interested!

Rob Martello @ the Education Luncheon
The faculty side of life: a realistic look at faculty limitations on cool Olin initiatives
Come join us for a discussion at noon on Tuesday, December 5th in the dining hall balcony about what things look like from the other side of the classroom. The illustrious Rob Martello will lead a reflection on various aspects of faculty life that students don't usually get to see - things like teaching loads, prep time for new courses, the difficulties in teaching integrated courses, and so on. We'll run through a bunch of cool possibilities and discuss realistic challenges that we will have to overcome. This is the pilot run of what we hope will become a regular lunch table - please email us if you're thinking of coming so we know how many people to expect!
Public Safety's Toys for Tots Program
Beginning Monday, November 27, 2006 thru Saturday, December 16, 2006, Public Safety will be sponsoring the annual Toys for Tots program at Babson and Olin Colleges to provide toys to underprivileged children.  The response to this program has grown dramatically over the past few years.  We were very pleased with last year's response and we invite you to join us again this year to make the holidays very special for a child who would normally not have the joys of receiving holiday presents.

Many of you wanted to know what ages are in most need of toys.  The answer is toys are needed for children of all ages.  We must further ask that when donating a toy, that it is not a stuffed animal.  Stuffed animals will not be accepted by the U.S. Marines.  Toys must be new and in the original packaging.

Once again, Chief John Jackson invites you to trade a parking ticket for a toy.  If you have received a parking ticket for a violation, other than parking in a Handicap Space or a Fire Lane, between the dates of November 13 and December 16, 2006, the ticket will be voided when you present a new, unwrapped toy with a value of at least  of the parking fine.  Please note that during this period, only one ticket, per person, will be invalidated upon the donation of a toy.

Many people do not realize that the United Parcel Service (UPS) donates their trucks to pick up the toys from drop off locations.  Last year UPS sent two trucks to Babson to transport toys to the U.S. Marine Reserves for distribution.  Please help us in our efforts to make this a great holiday season for children in need.  Please go to our website.  We will be posting pictures of the collection from time to time.

Thank you again from all of us at Public Safety.
ASME Elections
It's that time of the year for ASME to elect our new officers.  We will be electing Chair, Vice-Chair, Records, External Relations, and Projects officers for the 2007 term. Email asme@students.olin.edu if you would like to run or make a nomination.  Voting will take place at a club meeting next week (info below and ical attached).
