CORe Digest

November 17th 2006

My Fellow Students,

Helllloooooooooo Olin College! By the time you read this, nothing but a mere few hours will stand between you and Thanksgiving Break. So work like a dog to get every last thing taken care of -- and then relax! You deserve it.

At the end of the Digest intro last week, I included a little note, offering cookies to the first three people who responded with some "non-trivial" feedback. I ended up getting more than 20 responses in 7.5 hours -- not bad! Congrats to Ryan Mitchell, Mel Chua, and Matt Roy, who got back to me within 30 minutes; each was treated to two-dozen freshly-baked chocolate-chip cookies Saturday night.

I'd also like to thank everyone else who responded. Look for almost all of your feedback to be incorporated into future Digests! And keep your eye out -- I like making cookies, so this might not be a one-time thing. Without further ado, let's make like cowboys and get on this ...

Remember, check out the CORe Calendar in Outlook for more information about any of these upcoming activities!

Saturday Nov 18:

Sunday - Sunday: Thanksgiving Week!

Wednesday Nov 29:

Friday Dec 1:

That's about it for this week! Hopefully, the Digest will continue to change and improve as I'm able to integrate more feedback into it. Thanks again for all the input ... and have a fantastic break!

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Greening Olin tip of the week
Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners, but be sure to minimize food waste by taking small portions.  You can always go back for seconds!
Curriculum Revision Update
We've gathered tons of student, faculty, and staff feedback. ARB is sorting the ones that fall within the scope of the revision, and students will see these on Monday, Nov. 27. The first feedback round gave us an idea of what issues exist; next round will be a rough gauge of which ones the community deems best tackled through this curricular revision process.

We'll post updates weekly here until May (next week is Thanksgiving, so there won't be one then). The revision timescale is long (6+ months) and there will be many opportunities to contribute; we'll let you know as soon as these come up. Please ask a rep if you have questions or suggestions - that's what we're here for!
CWe Interviewer Selection Committee
CORe has yet another committee opportunity for you!
We are looking for three to four volunteers to help out on the Candidate's Weekend Interviewer Selection Committee (now, try saying that fast!). The charge of the committee will be to develop and implement a process for selecting student interviewers for both Candidate's Weekends for the class of 2011.

Clarification: this committee will select/ interview Olin students that will then interview prospective students at Candidate's Weekend. The students that serve on the committee will not be allowed to select themselves as interviewers.

If you are interested in helping out with this committee, please send us a brief statement of your motivations and qualifications at core@olin.edu by 12pm Friday, November 17th. Also, please feel free to nominate peers!

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from you!
Friday Community Service and SERV Auction!
SERV Auction, Boston Rescue Mission, Thanksgiving Service
Boston Rescue Mission - Friday, December 1st @ 2pm
The Friday after we return from Thanksgiving break, we'll be making a service trip to the Boston Rescue Mission(http://www.brm.org/), a homeless shelter in Boston. We'll be preparing and serving the 3 o'clock meal that is open to anyone who is hungry. Please join us! Email SERV@olin.edu to come.

Thanksgiving Break is a great time to get back in the habit of volunteering! Remember that Thanksgiving can be a great time of need for food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Look up places in your area and lend a helping hand!

Save the date for the SERV Auction!
A big thanks to everyone that donated to the SERV Auction. We have more donations now than in any previous year.

The SERV auction is happening right after Thanksgiving - the silent auction will be from Nov. 27th to 11:59am on December 1st. The live auction will be from 12-1pm on Dec.1st.

All the money will go directly to worthwhile charities. Half the money will go to the Chernobyl Children Project, an organization that works to bring healthcare to Russian children affected by Chernobyl and to bring children to Boston to give them hope, good food, clean water, and superb healthcare. Our own Zhenya works with this group as a translator. Your donations can help provide children's hospitals in Russia with needed medical supplies. The recipient of the other half of the money will be determined by you, the Olin community. SERV has chosen three wonderful charities for you to vote upon: The World Wildlife Fund, Heifer International, and Partners In Health. More details will arrive in your mailboxes about these charities and the voting process in the near future. Ballots will appear in student mailboxes after Thanksgiving and will be in the OC's lobby, second floor common area, and third floor common area for faculty and staff.

This year, for something completely new, we have solicited gift certificate donations from your favorite local businesses (Lemon Thai, Not Your Average Joe's, Sweet Basil, and Masala Art, just to name a few) to raffle off. During the silent auction, bring your cash to buy raffle tickets. The honor code system will have tickets, a collection tin, and change - pay $1 for two tickets or $5 for twelve tickets, write your name on the tickets, and pick the prizes you want to win. Each prize will have its own raffle.
Organize Halloween Fun for Needham Kids!
Needham Women's Club
Remember the Haunted Labyrinth? Needham Women's Club is looking for an Olin student to help plan their Halloween activities for next year. They are thinking of doing things such as face painting, hay rides, labyrinths and more right here on Olin's campus. This would be a low commitment activity for next semester. Student volunteers would be able to help determine, plan, and organize these events. By doing some planning next semester, everything can be squared away before summer break. If interested in learning more or volunteering, email SERV@olin.edu.
Winter Course Offerings at Babson
If you are in the area during winter session, you may be interested in a Babson Course Offerings.
