CORe Digest

November 10th 2006

My Fellow Students,

Let the registration begin! Make sure you've checked out the Course Catalog and the Registration Booklet, and you have all your classes planned out. Remember, only one more week till Thanksgiving!

The usual couple of notes:

CORe Business:

Also, CORe amended its Publication Guidelines to address a small concern raised by legal counsel of the college. The addition is as follows:

"Olin student publications, as they are an expression of the Olin student community and affect the reputation of the College, should be drafted with consideration of the College's Core Values and adhere to the Honor Code. In particular, careful consideration should be given to all audiences and the context of the publication. Any concerns regarding the suitability of content for a given audience should be addressed openly with the audience, the CORe General Assembly and/or Dean of Student Life prior to publication."

Note: Jessie Sullivan taught me how to make cookies last weekend. Therefore, the first 3 people who write back to me with a non-trivial amount of feedback about the CORe Digest (ideas, suggestions, etc) get cookies this upcoming weekend. We'll see how long this goes un-noticed ...

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

Greening Olin tip of the week
Do you like to keep your room warmer than the rest of your suite?  If so, keep your door closed.  This will prevent your heater from working overtime to keep your room warm.
Honor Board Table
Wednesday, Nov 15th 11am-1pm in the Dining Hall
Come talk to Honor Board members on Wednesday, November 15th from 11am-1pm in the Dining Hall. We want to hear your thoughts on the Honor Code, the Honor Board, community and academic concerns, and anything else you would like to bring to the table (literally, ha!).
Thinkature Launches!
Hi, everybody!

We're pleased to announce that we've just launched Thinkature, our project for the past several months.  Thinkature provides an environment like the UOCD studio on the web.  It allows you to work with note cards in a shared, web-based workspace.  You can chat with other people in a workspace and communicate complex ideas by creating and moving notecards, drawing pictures, and adding images.  We've seen it used for things ranging from to-do lists to collaboration between design teams overseas.

We invite you to try Thinkature at http://www.thinkature.com/.  We'd also love to hear what you think of it.

Thanks -- we hope you're all doing well!

Friday Community Service and SERV Auction!
Audio books, the SERV Auction, and local community service opportunities!
Audio books and team building activities, TODAY, 3-5PM

Do you like sound editing? SERV is putting together audio books for disabled adults (CODA) to learn how to read - the books are already recorded but need to be spliced together.
Do you want to help make team building kits? SERV is putting together two things for FIRST to use - gain experience with Steve the machiner (sortof like Bob the Builder) and make nifty things that will help high school students work as a team.
Both activities will start in the computer lab TODAY, Nov. 10 @ 3pm in the Computer Lab.

Local community service opportunities - get involved!

Here is a great volunteer website for students who want to volunteer in Massachusetts! The site classifies by different interests, and I have found under education many towns who would love for someone to teach technical skills (Word, PowerPoint, how to use the internet, etc.). Also, this site shows what towns are looking for volunteers so you can find something in the area!http://www.volunteersolutions.org/mass-service/volunteer/

Also, Needham has posted on their community council site (http://www.needhamcommunitycouncil.org/) all of the volunteer services in the Needham community and ways to get involved. You can find a wide range of things to do for the local community. Examples include ESL tutoring and driving senior citizens to the hospital so they can receive medical treatment (appointments, etc.).

Save the date for the SERV Auction!

The SERV auction is happening right after Thanksgiving - the silent auction will be from Nov. 27th to 11:59am on December 1st. The live auction will be from 12-1pm on Dec.1st.
SERV is currently soliciting donations (a packet of all donations will be released the week before Thanksgiving so that you may plan what you want to bid on!). Send us a description of your donation and the starting bid (if any) at SERV@olin.edu. The donation deadline is Tuesday the 14th! Today is your last chance to talk to us in the dining hall - if you said that "you'll think about it," now's the time to Do Something!

Need donation ideas? Here are some: food - baked goods, dinners, fast food runs, care packages, rides, babysitting (on campus during the day and off campus), cool/silly services like dancing like a monkey, services like gardening, lessons, dates, shoveling, arts and crafts items, tutoring, machine shop help, massages…the possibilities are endless!

All the money will go directly to worthwhile charities. Half the money will go to the Chernobyl Children Project, an organization that works to bring healthcare to Russian children affected by Chernobyl and to bring children to Boston to give them hope, good food, clean water, and superb healthcare. Our own Zhenya works with this group as a translator. Your donations can help provide children's hospitals in Russia with needed medical supplies. The recipient of the other half of the money will be determined by you, the Olin community. SERV has chosen three wonderful charities for you to vote upon: The World Wildlife Fund, Heifer International, and Partners In Health. More details will arrive in your mailboxes about these charities and the voting process in the near future. Ballots will appear in student mailboxes after Thanksgiving and will be in the OC's lobby, second floor common area, and third floor common area for faculty and staff.

This year, for something completely new, we have solicited gift certificate donations from your favorite local businesses (Lemon Thai, Not Your Average Joe's, Sweet Basil, and White Mountain Creamery, just to name a few) to raffle off. During the silent auction, bring your cash to buy raffle tickets. The honor code system will have tickets, a collection tin, and change - pay $1 for two tickets or $5 for twelve tickets, write your name on the tickets, and pick the prizes you want to win. Each prize will have its own raffle.
