CORe Digest

September 29th 2006

My Fellow Students,

So, the first thing you'll notice about this week's digest is that there isn't an audio version. While I've gotten some positive reviews (and no negative ones), it wasn't quite worth my time this week. If you think it's worth it, let me know -- this is all experimental, after all!

In lieu of an MP3, I spent a few minutes browsing the Toothpaste For Dinner archives at random, and decided to include the first one that made me chuckle. Of course, it's not even that funny. Maybe it's all that Discrete Math which is finally getting to me ...

A couple of other quick reminders:

This week's events:

As always, if you have any questions or want some more information about any of the above events, check the Calendar or drop me a line. That goes for general feedback too!

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Sudanese Refugee Art exhibit at Brandeis
Students in Brandeis anthropology Professor Mark Auslander's course "Museums and Public Memory" have collaboratively curated an exhibition of art by southern Sudanese refugees residing in Kakuma Refugee Camp in northern Kenya. The exhibit is called "Leave the Bones and Catch the Land: Southern Sudanese Art from Kakuma Refugee Camp." Exhibition Opening: Monday, October 23, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in Dreitzer Gallery, Spingold Theater building, Brandeis University.  Thirty paintings help document the experience of thousands of young southern Sudanese who fled the atrocities of Sudan's long-running civil war; the images are nuanced meditations on the nature of home and dispersal, ambivalent encounters with modernity, and prophetic visions of past and future.  Students have worked closely with members of the  southern Sudanese resettled community in the Boston area to develop the exhibition, which incorporates disparate voices and commentaries on the images and the history they represent.
