CORe Digest

September 29th 2006

My Fellow Students,

As CORe's VPC, I'd like to introduce Olin's very own, newly-created (in my mind only), Community Service Lizard. His name is Livingston, and he'd like you to know that he understands.

Livingston understands that you're busy here at Olin. He knows all about the classes, the homework, the clubs, the outings, and the precious little time you spend off campus. Livingston empathizes with you, and while he sees that you don't want another commitment, he also recognizes that you do want to do just a little more to help people, if you only had the chance once in a while.

But lizards are smart, and Livingston has a solution: SERV events! Later tonight, spend a few hours putting together meals for the less fortunate. See below for more details. Come once, every week or anything in between to SERV events -- no strings attached!

And, while SERV is kicking it up a notch, CORe is also in the midst of tackling some big student issues this week. First and foremost is the draft of student publication guidelines. A draft was sent to your inbox -- check it out, and give us your input! At the same time, a small controversy emerged last week over a prospective club name change. To learn more and voice your opinion about either of these issues, tackle your nearest CORe rep!

A couple of other quick reminders:

This week's events:

As always, if you have any questions or want some more information about any of the above events, check the Calendar or drop me a line. That goes for general feedback too!

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

SERV - community service time, new volunteering opportunities, and old projects seeking leadership
Get involved with new and old opportunities
Don't forget that community service time is every Friday from 3-5pm. Please don't schedule any college sponsored activities over this time. There are plenty of opportunities to fill this time - check out the community service projects below. As always, feel free to e-mail SERV@olin.edu with anything. Faculty, staff, and students, are all invited to participate in SERV opportunities.

Community Servings, TODAY 5-8pm

Community Servings is an organization that provides free home-delivered meals to people homebound with HIV/AIDS and other acute life-threatening illnesses and cannot shop or cook for themselves. Their goal is to help their clients maintain their health and dignity, provide nutritionally and culturally appropriate meals, preserve the integrity of their family, and send the message that someone cares. You would be helping to make these meals - preparing and packaging the 1300 meals a day that Community Servings serves. Volunteer there TODAY from 5-8. E-mail SERV if you can make it and go to http://www.servings.org/index.htm for more information.

Horizons for Homeless Children, Playspace Activity Leaders

Horizons for Homeless Children is looking for Playspace Activity Leaders. This involves working with children ages 1-5 for 2hrs per week. This is a great chance to make a positive impact while playing with kids. Responsibilities include preparing and leading age appropriate activities, games, and/or projects with children in family shelter programs and battered women shelter programs and promoting positive interactions. If interested, please email SERV.

Needham Olin Technology Exchange (NOTE)

Do you like computers and hardware? Do you like people? You can help people with NOTE, refurbishing used computers and donating them to families of K-12 students. NOTE works closely with Needham Public Schools to identify receiving families as well as solicit donations to the organization. By providing computers to those who would otherwise be unable to afford them, NOTE hopes to help narrow the digital divide. If you're interested in participating in this project or leading NOTE, let SERV know! Website: http://serv.olin.edu/note/

Bikes Not Bombs

Bikes Not Bombs (bikesnotbombs.org) is a nonprofit in Roxbury working for alternative transportation and community development. Volunteer crews collect and repair donated bicycles to be sent to places like Ghana, El Salvador, and Guatemala, where Bikes Not Bombs sets up bike mechanic training courses for the local youth to have another opportunity at income.

They run a similar program here at their Roxbury location where inner-city youth have the chance to repair, rebuild, and ultimately earn a bicycle of their own; some teens go on to work in the Bikes Not Bombs bike shop. Volunteers are needed for bicycle repair parties every Wednesday night, or any time; no experience is needed. For those interested in teaching, Bikes Not Bombs runs a free bike mechanics training course every year for those interested in teaching those mechanical skills to teenagers the following fall.

This project is looking for volunteers as well as a leader; if interested, please contact SERV.
Community Service, Geek Style
Want to do community service? Want to use your engineering skills? Read on…
Community service is one of the founding principles of Olin College, and Olin students love to serve. Even so, there are not many opportunities for Olin students to put what they have learned in class into serving the community. Olin TECS (Technical Expertise for Community Service) changes all that. We help you find an organization that needs your higher level skill, so that you can make whatever it is you do an effort for a good cause.

If you are interested, see http://tecs.olin.edu and please contact Mark Chang (mark.chang@olin.edu) directly. We already have community work to be done and are looking for folks to help out. I anticipate the time commitment for meetings to be low, and commitments to actually doing something to be flexible.

Join in!

FILM Presents: Monty Python's Life of Brian
Continuing with our controversial theme...
"Blessed are the cheesemakers," a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python's Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers--it's an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy--things that that fellow from Nazareth didn't particularly care for either. Nevertheless, at the time of its release in 1979, those who hadn't seen it considered it to be quite "controversial."

Life of Brian, you see, is about a chap named Brian (Graham Chapman) born December 25 in a hovel not far from a soon-to-be-famous Bethlehem manger. Brian is mistaken for the messiah and, therefore, manipulated, abused, and exploited by various religious and political factions. And it's really, really funny. … Life of Brian is not only one of Monty Python's funniest achievements, it's also the group's sharpest and smartest sustained satire. Blessed are the Pythons. --Jim Emerson
Help Elect Democrats in November
And have fun, too!
Bring your laptop & cell phone and come phone bank for MoveOn this Sunday from 3-5 in the 3rd floor lounge of the AC (the space where the OCO plays) with the Olin Progressive Alliance!  Come for any or all of the time, or even just come by to say hi.

What you'll be doing: MoveOn is running a targeted get-out-the-vote campaign. What we're doing now is identifying voters that are likely to vote for progressive candidates. If we think they're a good match, MoveOn volunteers will call them again before the elections to encourage them to vote. This is a super-easy and concrete way to boost liberal turnout in highly contested districts.

Questions? Let me know!

So, you wanna blog?
Launching a tech blog at Olin… come and be part
Hey Olin students. Do you like electronic gadgets? Do you appreciate good design? Do you like writing (or wish you got more practice)? Do you want to participate in the revolution that is digital-micro-personal-electronic-publishing-2.0? Well then, have we got an opportunity for you!

Mark Chang and a few students are starting up a design blog where Olin students can write about the good and bad of consumer electronic devices in a format centered upon good design principles (function, interaction, and character). We'll get various devices to play with from around campus or donations/loans and write them up around a common criteria. Individual student commitment will be as little or as much as they are interested in.

We're still determining the exact format and direction that things will be taking, but if you're at all interested in participating, please contact Mark Chang right away!
MySafeCampus Incident Reporting System
Consistent with Olin's Core Institutional Value of Institutional Integrity and Community, we are proud to announce a new service.  This new system is an enhancement, not a replacement, of our current resources and policies/procedures.  Please feel free to utilize this system if you do not feel comfortable using our current procedures.

We are implementing a new anonymous incident reporting system entitled MySafeCampus.  This system will enable each of you to submit a report via the Web (www.mysafecampus.com) or by calling the toll-free number (1-800-461-9330) that is forwarded to a call center, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The workplace issues you may report via MySafeCampus include, but are not limited to:

acceptable use violations, campus safety/security concerns, code of ethics violation, compliance/regulation violations, discrimination, embezzlement, employee relations, financial concerns, fraud, harassment, hazardous campus housing concerns, information security, misuse of authority, safety concerns, sexual harassment, violation of the 1974 Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), waste, and others.

For more information, see the attached addendum.

Possession of fireworks is also prohibited by the College.

Extended Advising Family Lunch
At noon on Thursday, October 5th (Career Initiatives Day), extended advising families will meet for lunch in assigned classrooms in the Academic Center.  Boxed lunches will be provided in the lobby of the Academic Center, and room assignments will be posted.  Corporate guests who will be visiting for Career Initiatives Day will join the extended families.  The purpose of the lunch is to provide an informal setting in which students can ask for career-related advice and tips.  Students will be e-mailed a list of potential questions and faculty members will be sent pertinent information.  This is the only lunch option for students and faculty that day; students of all class years will benefit from this session.  Have fun!

CSTB - Forms due October 2, 2006 !
Thinking of studying away and having the course appear on your Olin transcript? Curious if that Wellesley course you are taking will fulfill a curriculum requirement? Then the way to find out is to fill out either a Transfer Credit Pre-Approval form (non-BBW) or a Course Substitution Form (BBW, approved transfer courses). Both forms can be found at the STaR Office Web Site (http://star.olin.edu), under the Forms tab.  The deadline has been extended for these forms to October 2, 2006 (same day as the study away applications are due).

Too soon, you fret? Not to fear, the next deadline for these forms is the final day of classes (December 12, 2006).

Any further questions? Talk to your friendly neighborhood CSTB (Burt Tilley, Linda Canavan, and David Soo), a wholly owned subcommittee of the ARB.
Summer Book Suggestions Due by October 31
The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee is accepting suggestions for next summer's book.  The committee will consider four factors in reviewing your suggestions:  readability, lends itself to a Convocation discussion, relates to the Olin curriculum, and is available in paperback or at paperback price.  Suggestions (title, author and rationale) should be sent to Rod Crafts (rod.crafts@olin.edu) by October 31.
Babysitter Needed
Needham residents Kevin and Jill Daley are interested in finding an Olin student who would be interested in babysitting this fall to make some extra spending money.  Mr. and Mrs. Daley are neighbors of President Miller and can be reached at (781) 444-2639.

Flexible hours (ideal is 5-9 pm Mon-Thurs, but other times are possible). See http://www.vitaneedle.com/ for more info on the company. It's downtown on Great Plain Ave. A very interesting place, and engineering students may find their production process of interest. They're looking for people to do this kind of work: light industrial, light machine work, packaging, picking orders. Contact the manager directly: Michael, 781-444-1780. I am happy to answer any questions.
Artwork In Autumn Event
A reminder that the Development Office is partnering with the Offices of Parents and Alumni Relations and External Relations and the Parent Advisory Board (PAB) to offer a new event as part of Family Weekend.  On October 14th, there will be a silent auction of artwork as part of a reception.  The reception will be held in the Academic Center and we would love for the artwork to reflect the talents of our students, faculty and staff.  The first two hours of the reception will be for Family Weekend participants only (4-6pm) and the hours of 6pm-8pm will include invitees from the communities of Needham, Dedham and Wellesley.  We are writing to ask for your assistance.

There are a number of ways you can help:
  • Donate a piece of artwork that you have created (we regret that at the present time we cannot accept video submissions but digital photography, works in oil, watercolors, crayon, charcoal, pencil and sculptured materials are all acceptable);
  • Distribute invitations to your friends in the Needham, Dedham, Wellesley area;
  • Volunteer to help with the event itself (registration, set up of the artwork, mingling, etc.);
  • Write about the event for use in Olin and other publications;
  • Solicit potential sponsors who can advertise in the program;
  • Attend the event!  (invitation to come)

If you are interested in donating artwork or otherwise participating in the event please email development@olin.edu.

Artwork donations are due by October 1, 2006 to the Development Office, Olin Center Suite 300.  The artwork should be accompanied by a brief description of the work that will be used in the event catalog.

We look forward to your joining us in making this inaugural Artwork in Autumn event a success!
