CORe Digest
September 21st, 2006
My Fellow Students,
I'm going to take this glorious opportunity to (re)introduce all of my loyal readers
(read:twelve people) to CORe's Public Calendar.
Look for it yourself, in Outlook:
Go > Folder List; Public Folders > All Public Folders > Calendars > CORe
I'll be keeping this thing up to date with everything anyone throws at me.
So here's what you, my minions, are to do:
- If you can think of an event, big club meeting, or anything else Olin Students should know
about -- Email Me!
I'll throw it on there, so that other students can ...
- Check the Calendar while bored or slacking, to find fun stuff to do.
You can even right-click the CORe Calendar and add it to your Favorites.
This way, you'll always have the option of checking it alongside your normal calendar --
so you don't miss a thing.
In each Digest, I'll continue to look ahead a week to pull out events, like these:
Friday:
- 8pm-11pm: Comedian Owen Smith @ Babson / Reynolds Campus Center
Saturday:
- Magic: The Gathering Pre-Release Outing
- 8pm-9pm: SAC's Movies Remixed!
Sunday:

Sincerely,
Christopher Dellin
Your Vice President of Communication
SERV Election Results
Congratulations to the 2006-2007 SERV board's final two members, Jillian Kiser and Heena Mutha from the class of 2010!
Thanks to all who ran and voted in the elections.
Butterfingers Wants You
to join us for juggling and return our equipment
If you're interested in juggling or learning how, sign up for the list
butterfingers@lists.olin.edu! We don't spam you, but often send out an email once a week on Sunday when we'll be getting out the equipment and juggling.
Second, if you've borrowed our things to practice and forgotten to give them back or know someone with some "new" juggling balls, please give them back. Butterfingers is missing a blue club, numerous balls (blue and silver, red, and yellow), and a devil stick. Please return them to the bin in the 1st floor East Hall storage closet. Thanks!
NEW CLUB: Join the Olin Progressive Alliance
Do something this November.
The elections in November could be huge. A new Congress could result in real change on affordable healthcare, the war in Iraq, stem cell research, and a host of other issues. Come make it happen.
The Olin Progressive Alliance was founded to give students on the left side of the political spectrum a chance to express themselves and work for political change. Things we'll be doing this year include reaching out to potential voters, media screening events, working with local campaigns, and whatever you're excited about.
Ways to get involved:
1. Get your MoveOn and come to our inaugural meeting! It's this Sunday from 2-3 in AC109. (iCal attached.) Talk about events and what excites you.
See you there!
Robotics Lab Grand Opening
Have you ever wanted to build a robot? It's quite a task - you get to design something from scratch, build it, add appropriate sensors and electronics, and then develop and program cool control algorithms.
It can be really fun. It can also be overwhelming, especially if you feel uneasy about any of the many engineering disciplines required.
Gill Pratt and his team of researchers are here to help you.
The Biomimetic Robotics Laboratory is now open for business with regularly scheduled working hours posted on our door. Researchers have already started work on a child-sized biped, a deformable wheel, snake robots, cat robots, and more. We would like to invite motivated students to become a part of the lab and to bring any personal robotics projects, dreams or ideas along.
Interested? Come stop by the lab (AC 228) sometime and say hi.
Social Justice Reading group
Get on board for this year!
What does it mean to strive for social justice? Students attending engineering colleges sometimes say they have too few opportunities to sit and think about the world in which we live, social problems, how society is organized, or the workings of power. Olin faculty often speak about the great potential of Olin students to make real differences and significant contributions to society. Given this potential, it is all the more important that we have spaces in which dialogue about social justice can occur.
Join the Social Justice Reading Group! We will meet twice a month, from about 8:00-9:30 p.m., in Mark and Caryn's apartment. The precise time, and day of the week will be decided once we have an idea of everyone's schedules. Readings will be light (about 35 pages per session), and can be chosen together, but may range from critical theorists such as Michel Foucault, postmodernists writing about The Matrix, cultural, postcolonial, and critical race/gender theorists. These folks will help us to think about concepts such as ideology, race, hegemony, class, oppression, feminism, identity politics, language, and, ultimately, social change.
Join us in thinking about what kind of citizens we want to be, or what the world would look like if we could fashion it according to our own vision. This reading group is all about taking the red pill.
If you are interested, please email Mark Chang (
mark.chang@olin.edu) directly. We will be getting started soon, so get on board!
Hindi Table!
Mondays during Lunch
Join Jonathan Raphael and I at the Hindi/Urdu conversation table
Mondays, 12-1 PM in the dining hall mezzanine.
If you speak Hindi/Urdu, or are just interested in the language and culture, come practice with us!
Olin Entrepreneurial Group BBQ
OEG (Olin Entrepreneurial Group) is hosting a BBQ Friday September 29th, from 4-7pm at the Foundry (Olin's Campus, Edison House, 1795 Great Plains Ave). All Olin students are encouraged to come. Please RSVP to Joe Roskowski by Wednesday. If you're interesting in finding out about future events, sign up for the OEG mailing list at lists.olin.edu. Please send questions & comments to Alex Dorsk. Babies and Books: What do you read to kids?
Part of OSL's ongoing diversity series
The residence halls will soon be alive with the sounds of babies! Ramey & Nick and Caryn & Mark are both about to be first-time parents. In this session, we will explore the challenges of what to read to your kids.
- What books would you read to the new baby?
- Do the books you read include people of various races and cultures?
- When or how do you introduce topics such as being gay?
- How would you deal with books they will read in school or at a friend’s house that promote “traditional” norms that you are uncomfortable with?
- Are these topics important to consider?
Join us for an hour of interactive discussion and idea sharing.

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition - Decenber 2, 2006
Sign up to participate by October 4 !
The Putnam Exam is an international mathematical event that pits the best undergraduate mathematical minds on some ingeniously clever problems. Olin has fielded a team in the past, and there has been some interest in forming a team this year. If you are interested in participating, please contact Prof. Tilley (
tilley@olin.edu) to sign up. The exam is on Dec 2 this year, and is
six hours long (two three-hour parts). Historically, the median score (thousands of students take the exam each year) of the 120 point test is either zero or unity.
"The examination will be constructed to test originality as well as technical competence. It is expected that the contestant will be familiar with the formal theories embodied in undergraduate mathematics. It is assumed that such training, designed for mathematics and physical science majors, will include somewhat more sophisticated mathematical concepts than is the case in minimal courses. Thus the differential equations course is presumed to include some references to qualitative existence theorems and subtleties beyond the routine solution devices. Questions will be included that cut across the bounds of various disciplines, and self-contained questions that do not fit into any of the usual categories may be included. It will be assumed that the contestant has acquired a familiarity with the body of mathematical lore commonly discussed in mathematics clubs or in courses with such titles as survey of the foundations of mathematics. It is also expected that the self-contained questions involving elementary concepts from group theory, set theory, graph theory, lattice theory, number theory, and cardinal arithmetic will not be entirely foreign to the contestant’s experience."

MentorNet's One-on-One Mentoring Programs focus on matching women and underrepresented minorities with female or male professionals from all sectors as mentors for one-on-one, email-based mentoring (e-mentoring) relationships. The program has proven effective by providing "real world" information, encouragement, advice, and access to networks that are otherwise often unavailable to those underrepresented in the fields of engineering and science.
