CORe Digest

September 15th 2006

My Fellow Students,

First things first: I have a confession. While many of you might know me as the dorky brown-haired skin-colored Junior who uses Linux on my Dell laptop, I've been hiding something ... A deep, dark secret that was unfortunately discovered by an intrepid young photographer known as Deep Throat ... no, wait, it was Chandra Little. So the truth is, I'm actually a squishy green pillow man who makes the Digest every week with my trusty Apple PowerBook.

But even if I am a pillow, you should still get pumped about this Digest ... There are plenty of things to do this week!

Here's a quick breakdown of all the fun stuff happening at Olin over the next week:

Friday:

Saturday:

Also, our friends involved in Babson Arts programs would like to remind Olin students that there are quite a few great programs and opportunities to help you unwind after a hard week or a tough exam, including Ceramics Classes, B&W Photography, dedicated Art and Music practice spaces, and much more!

If any of this sounds appetizing, feel free to drop me a line ... you'd be amazed all the cool stuff Babson can fit on a campus with more than 5 buildings!

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

10-week Blues Dance Series on Thursday Nights Begins Next Week
Brought to you by ODP
Ogden and Amanda, the nationally-respected blues-swing teachers, will be teaching a 10-week blues dance series here at Olin starting on Thursday, September 21st.  The hour and a half lessons will run from 9:00-10:30 in the Dining Hall and will be followed by open dancing until 11:30; the dates are 9/21, 9/28, 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, and 12/7.   Blues is a slower, more expressive (dare I say sultrier) form of swing dancing with a connection that feels more like tango, yet it is completely compatible with other types of swing.  Just ask around Olin if you're not familiar, as lots of people are already into it!  The cost of attending the lesson series is just $20 for the semester, payable in cash (or check) at the end of the first lesson.  To make sure the classes run smoothly, the size will be capped to 50 people.  Get your dance shoes ready!

Work @ Olin? Then, read this ...

Being a part of the student work force at Olin is contributing to a vital element of the Olin Community.  Students have the opportunity to see a completely different side of the College and to work with faculty and staff outside of the classroom.  In addition, it’s an easy way to pick up some extra $$ and the commute's not bad, either.  As this academic year begins, we welcome you back and ask for your help with the following:

Completing the Paperwork: Once you have an offer of employment, and BEFORE you begin to work, you must report to the Student Employment Office (Elaine Drobnis, Olin Center Suite 300) to complete the necessary paperwork.  This process officially validates you as an employee of the college, sets you up to be paid through direct deposit, provides certain coverage under the College’s employee insurance program, and ensures your eligibility for work.  Only after you complete this process are you considered an official employee.  Hours worked before returning completed paperwork to Elaine Drobnis, (OC300) are ineligible for pay.

Timesheets: Under the terms of your employment, timesheets are due by 5 p.m. EACH Friday* in the student employment office (Olin Center Suite 300).   This is important as it ensures that you will be paid on time and allows us to more accurately predict the number of students we can hire each semester.  *Note: If you work on a Saturday or Sunday, please submit your timesheet by 10 a.m. on Monday morning.

Timesheet Tips:
Establish a specific day/time to get your supervisor’s signature.
Ask your supervisor who can sign when s/he is unavailable for signature.

Things to Avoid: Submitting timesheets late or accumulating several timesheets causes a number of problems.  First, when we hire additional students later in the semester, we end p over budget when late time sheets are turned in.  The accuracy of the timesheets can be questionable or there maybe issues as a result of different tax years.  It is a burden on our Financial Services office when they are presented with a large volume of timesheets i.e. right before a vacation when everyone wants to get paid!

Thanks for your cooperation and if you have any general questions about student employment, contact Elaine Drobnis, (Elaine.drobnis@olin.edu, ext. 2409).

LEICA Confocal Microscope Comes to Campus
Next week, we are hosting a demonstration of a Leica confocal microscope in anticipation of purchasing a confocal microscope for campus.  For those of you who don’t know, a confocal microscope is an awesome microscope which allows you to optically image samples in three dimensions!  How would YOU like to take a look at it and play with the instrument for a while?  On Tuesday from 12-1, there will be a talk in AC 417 introducing the instrument.  Wednesday afternoon from 2-5, we have time available for any student to come by and take a look.  Please email rebecca.christianson@olin.edu if you would like to take advantage of this, and the time on Wednesday afternoon when you are available (you do not need to attend the talk on Tuesday to see the instrument Wednesday).  If you want to see a confocal in action, but this time doesn’t work for you, stay tuned in coming weeks for another demo of an Olympus confocal microscope.

Possible Discolored or Rusty Water
Quick! Shower now before it's too late!
Beginning September 19 and continuing through September 22, 2006, the Charles River Water Treatment Facility will begin maintenance to prepare for activation of an additional Town Well.

Maintenance will result in flow reversals in the water mains throughout the Town.  Some sections of the Town may experience discolored or rusty water.  This discoloration is not a health risk.  Residents are advised to store enough water for drinking & cooking, and not do laundry or dishes until the water clears.  Discolored water should clear within 24 hours of completion of the maintenance.  To flush the discolored water within your home (or residence hall!), open the cold-water faucet and let it run for several minutes.  If the water does not clear within this time, wait an hour and repeat the process.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this work, you may contact the Water Treatment Facility at (781) 416-4071, M-F, 7am-3:30pm.

Thank you for your cooperation,
Robert Lewis, Water & Sewer Superintendent

Artwork In Autumn Event
A reminder that the Development Office is partnering with the Offices of Parents and Alumni Relations and External Relations and the Parent Advisory Board (PAB) to offer a new event as part of Family Weekend.  On October 14th, there will be a silent auction of artwork as part of a reception.  The reception will be held in the Academic Center and we would love for the artwork to reflect the talents of our students, faculty and staff.  The first two hours of the reception will be for Family Weekend participants only (4-6pm) and the hours of 6pm-8pm will include invitees from the communities of Needham, Dedham and Wellesley.  We are writing to ask for your assistance.

There are a number of ways you can help:
  • Donate a piece of artwork that you have created (we regret that at the present time we cannot accept video submissions but digital photography, works in oil, watercolors, crayon, charcoal, pencil and sculptured materials are all acceptable);
  • Distribute invitations to your friends in the Needham, Dedham, Wellesley area;
  • Volunteer to help with the event itself (registration, set up of the artwork, mingling, etc.);
  • Write about the event for use in Olin and other publications;
  • Solicit potential sponsors who can advertise in the program;
  • Attend the event!  (invitation to come)

If you are interested in donating artwork or otherwise participating in the event please email development@olin.edu.

Artwork donations are due by October 1, 2006 to the Development Office, Olin Center Suite 300.  The artwork should be accompanied by a brief description of the work that will be used in the event catalog.

We look forward to your joining us in making this inaugural Artwork in Autumn event a success!
