CORe Digest

September 7th 2006

My Fellow Students,

Important CORe Reminders:

Olin Curriculum, Passionate Pursuits, Expo, Alumni Relations, IT, Art, Crisis Management, ... anything sound interesting? Olin needs you! Despite all the awesome opportunities to join clubs, the Honor Board (applications are due Monday, September 8th), and other awesome groups, don't forget to join Olin Committees! There are over 29 different topics to choose from (OK, there are 30) ... find something you're interested in, and let CORe know! A list of all committees, along with their descriptions and past representatives, is listed on the CORe Website, and more information is upcoming.

It's a busy week, so get your Olin while it's HOT!

Sincerely,

Christopher Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

September 11th Anniversary Candle Lighting
On Monday, September 11th, we will light a candle in the Glavin Family Chapel to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania, and to honor the memory of the victims of those events. The Chapel will be open throughout the day, and I encourage you to stop by to pray, to meditate, or to reflect.

Since that awful day, a number of other events have shaken the world, including the tsunami that devastated southern Asia, hurricane Katrina, continued strife in Africa and the Middle East, and a wide array of other catastrophes and tragedies. Nature is responsible for many of these events, and humans have caused the others. I encourage you, during your reflections on the events of September 11th, to contemplate the role that you will play in making the world a more hospitable place. I also encourage you to contemplate the role that business, education, and engineering might play in that same endeavor.

With best wishes,
The Rev. Dr. Thomas P. Sullivan
Director of Spiritual Life, Glavin Family Chapel
Babson College, 781-239-5623

Mail Room Security
Students should be aware that it is a Federal Offense and breech of the Olin College Honor Code to enter the Olin Mail Room without authorization.

There have been recent after hour attempts to enter the mail room through the rolling metal door at the service window. This door has now been secured and the area is under camera surveillance.

The Monday through Friday window hours for students to pick up packages will be extended beginning next week. The hours will be 11 am to 2 pm.

Thank you for your cooperation relating to this issue.
Olin, Babson, Wellesley Sponsor Lecture Series on Leadership and Ethics
Lectures open to all members of BBOW communities
Olin College, Babson College and Wellesley College are teaming up this fall to sponsor a public lecture series on leadership and ethics. The speakers will offer perspectives based on their research and experience exercising leadership, often in difficult situations fraught with challenging ethical dilemmas. The lecture series is part of a course on professional ethics and leadership development that is being team taught this fall by the presidents of the three institutions.

The series kicks off Tuesday, Sept. 12, with a lecture by Wellesley President Diana Chapman Walsh on Trustworthy Leadership.

Future speakers in the series include Col. Thomas A. Kolditz, Chairman, Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, U.S. Military Academy, speaking on The In-Extremis Leader (Oct. 3);  Mr. Lawrence J. Lasser, former President and CEO, Putnam Investments, on Crisis Management: Lessons I Learned--What I Wish I Had Known (Oct. 31); Dr. James E. Ashton, Chairman, Poco Graphite, Inc. (former whistleblower on the Trident Submarine program at General Dynamics) on Career Experiences: Leadership, Integrity, and Performance (Nov. 7); and Professor Carolyn Hotchkiss, Professor of Business Law, Babson College, on Leadership and Ethics in the Global Economy (Nov. 14).

Each presentation will take place in the Olin Center Auditorium. The presentations will begin at 4:30 pm and will last about an hour. These presentations are free and open to the general public, as well as all members of the Olin, Babson, and Wellesley college communities.

Engineering Education Research Assistant Needed
An NSF-funded study needs you!!!  This study, performed in collaboration with Dr. Mia Ong of TERC and Project SEED at The Civil Rights Project of Harvard University, looks at project-based learning and its effects on student learning, satisfaction, enjoyment, and retention in engineering.  We are particularly interested in gender differences, if any.  The study involves 4 different schools and will span three years, so if you join this year, you may have enough work ahead of you for the next 3! :)

At this time, we are looking for a group of motivated students to join our efforts in this study.  The students will be involved in collecting and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, performing large literature searches and synthesis, as well as writing papers and conference presentations.  (For more information, please see OSSISURB site).  Our group consists of two PI's (myself and Mia), a few graduate students from Harvard, and a group of Olin students.  If you are interested in the project and/or would like to hear more, please, contact me at your earliest convenience.
Paid Thermal-Fluids Lab Assistant Position
We are looking for up to 2 students to work 5 hours a week developing, building and testing thermal-fluids lab experiments and demos.  Brian and I have a lot of ideas of things we'd like to do, and we'd like your help in trying them out.  If you are interested in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, wind tunnels, or sometimes messy experiments, or if you just like building things and doing hands-on experiments, this is the job for you.

Stop by or email if you are interested, or if you have any questions.
Paid Tutor Positions Available
I am looking to hire students from the classes of '07, '08, and '09 as individual tutors to work with other Olin students throughout the year on an as-needed basis.  Hours are very flexible and are agreed upon by the students involved.  Tutors help students with all sorts of academic subjects, but there is always a great demand for assistance in math and physics.  Please contact me for more information.  Thanks!
