My Fellow Students,

Upcoming GA Meeting:
- Visit from Rod Crafts: Questions or concerns about anything related to Commencement? Here's your chance to get the scoop, straight from the top.

Well, that's all the time I have this week, folks. As always, be sure to let me know if you have any feedback!

A Quantum, Quadratic Quickening of Queries
or, Accelerating algorithmic searching with quantum computers and Grover's algorithm
A talk by Mike Curtis as part of the Olin Self-Study
Wednesday May 3rd, 3-4pm
Location: AC 113
Abstract: Quantum computing is a reformulation of computing theory based on a quantum-mechanical description of reality, rather than a Newtonian one. Quantum computing and quantum information theories tie computations and the physical machines which perform them, computers, even closer together with our best theories about the nature of reality. The discovery of several important algorithms which can only be run on quantum computers has sparked a major research effort to try to develop one. This talk will explain the basic mechanics of quantum computation, and one major quantum algorithm: Grover’s database search algorithm. When run on a quantum computer, this algorithm offers a speedup which is quadratic with the size of the input.
Sindbad the Sailor in Translation
OSS / AHS Capstone Presentation
As the semester wraps up, I’m eager to share what I’ve learned during my OSS and AHS Capstone studies. Please join me on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 in AC 109 from 10-10:30am for:
Sindbad the Sailor in Translation
The collection of tales known as One Thousand Nights and One dates back to the early 9th century. This version, and a version from the 15th century are the basis for the hundreds of translations of the work. In my studies I look specifically at the story of Sindbad in the original Arabic work, the first translation of it into French, and a popular English translation, and compare them. I will also be presenting some background on Arabic translation, and the context of this collection of stories from its origin in the Middle Ages.
Hope to see you there!

Want to help at the MPI Workshop this Summer ... Read on! Short-term summer positions
MPI Workshop Positions
The Twenty-Second Annual Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop 2006 (MPI) (see
http://projects.olin.edu/mpi2006 for more information) will be held at Olin this year on June 12-16. This workshop starts with industrial presenters posing a problem that needs to be solved, and the remainder of the workshop is spent by the participants trying to solve them! We have one-week summer positions for students who are interested in being a part of this event and in helping to facilitate the workshop. These duties include helping orient the participants to Olin, getting reference materials (if needed) from MIT, and in general helping to get resources for the participants in the workshop. Students can chose to participate as well, but this is not required.
Involvement in the workshop can be adjusted to your other commitments, so contact Burt Tilley if you are interested in working in the MPI !!
