CORe Digest

April 21st, 2006

My Fellow Students,

It's hard for me to believe that I've hardly been in office for one week. Oh how busy we've been! Along with the usual smattering of events for this upcoming week (including SERV Elections and Earth Day), I'm also experimenting with a few additional sections for your Digest. For instance:

Deadlines:

CORe Announcements:

The Greeter Recommendation Committee and Commencement Steering Committee would like to announce the Faculty/Staff and Student greeters who will speak at Commencement a mere one month away. Mark Somerville and Tommy Cecil have been selected. The committees would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered and wrote speeches.

Yearbook Update:

Earlier this week, the Yearbook staff met with CORe's General Assembly, and then with President Miller, Provost Kerns, and Dean Crafts to discuss the 12-person collaborative snapshot coordinated by Molly Trombley-McCann. The General Assembly made no ruling on whether it could be published, but did request the Yearbook survey its student customers about their opinions on the matter. (All survey data can be found here.) The administration also took no formal stance on whether the art should be included, but at this point the Yearbook is seriously considering alternative content. Please direct questions, comments, or concerns to yearbook@olin.edu or your local CORe representative.

If you've got some free time this weekend (and I know everybody does), take a few minutes and skim CORe's Annual Review. See how far we've come, but push us to do better. Speaking of that, remember that if you like or dislike anything in the Digest, please give me a ring.

Chris Dellin

Your Vice President of Communication

Panel on Religion and Spirituality at Olin
Hear about students’ experiences here at Olin
Listen to four students talk about their experiences and feelings about religion and spirituality at Olin. This is not going to be a theology lesson or a definitive answer on “What It Means To Be Religious.” Rather, it will allow us an opportunity to hear about individual experiences and the climate for being religious or spiritual at Olin.

The panel will be moderated by Patti Blanchette and feature:
  • Dan Bufford
  • Jo Itescu
  • Mohsin Khan (Babson)
  • Carmelle Tsai

Nanotechnology Summer Research Opportunity at Olin!
(The smaller ones are sweeter.)
Are you interested in getting involved in a research project with Olin faculty members?  Do you like really, really, tiny things, like nanoparticles?  Would you like to use these really, really, tiny things to make big things (like jet engines) more efficient?  Rebecca Christianson and Jessica Townsend have two summer research jobs open for Olin students in the Olin Nanofluids Laboratory.  We are looking for self-motivated students to test the physical and thermal characteristics of nanofluids, and to design an experimental set-up to test the cooling properties of the nanofluids in a real-world system (like a liquid-cooled computer).  No research experience necessary, just a can-do attitude and a willingness to jump in and figure out how things work.  There is work for MEs, ECEs and Es in this project.  Email Jessica (jessica.townsend@olin.edu) for more information.  We'll interview interested students next week.
