We are live in five...

.

ON AIR.

This is DGST Radio, Olin College, broadcasting from the lovely and spacious East Hall, Room 229G. DGST Radio, getting ready to rock you from the Antfarm to Parcel B...

Gooooooooooood moooooooooorning Olin Collegeeeeeeeee!

Is it a little too early for being that loud? Hey, time to wake up and start a beautiful, rainy Needham morning. It's oh-six-hundred. What's the 'Oh' stand for? OMGhi2U Fridaymoring!

You're listening to DGST Radio with me, Michael W. Curtis, your host, and special guest today Franklin W. Olin, all the way from the Great Beyond, via satellite. Mr. Olin, thanks for joining us.

"I'm just, very happy to be here, speaking to you all."

Well, Mr. Olin, I think we're all happy to hear from you.

"Please, call me Frank."

Well, Frank, I think we might as well start with the biggest burning question on all of our minds: so… what do you think?

"Ah... think... of?"

This place! It's got your name, we've got your money, you have your own building, and your relics are entombed in the Secret Crypt beneath the O. What do you think of what we've done with your legacy?

"Well, I think it's very nice. I'm of course, honored by all that has been accomplished. You've got a program and curriculum that makes me jealous that I'm not in your shoes now... but, there's just a few things that I should like to mention."

Such as?

"It's just... the Olin Center. It's, well, not really my style."

What? How could you not like the Olin Center? It's all curvy, and has huge windows, and that crazy external staircase that was a giant pain in the #%$ to build… and the LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE! How can you not love the eternal LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE. I mean, it's a big, steel, squarish, lampshade-looking thing… OF KNOWLEDGE! Whenever I walk in, I can just feel the knowledge beams radiating from it, making me smarter… more knowledgeable. Have you ever noticed that? We did it for you, Frank.

"Well, all that is mostly fine. It's just that I don't like the color. And you don't have a baseball team. I am, however, proud to see so many of you sporting ye olde 'stache. Wear them proudly: in all honesty, it's what convinced Mary to go out with me the first time."

Well, that's about all the time we have with Frank today. Thanks for stopping by. We'd love to have you back any time.

It's with a fair amount of sadness that I, too, am just about to run out of time. No, I'm not following Frank back to the Great Beyond. You see, this is my last week as your host of CORe Digest on DGST Radio. I'm ditching this gig and moving on to bigger things. Now, I know what you're saying… "Finally." But after that, I know you're asking who will bring you your favorite digestion of campus events and announcements? I don't know for sure, but if you vote in the E-Board elections next week Wednesday you'll get a say.

I can say for sure that it has been a distinct pleasure carrying out my duties as your VPC, not the least of which has been bringing you the Digest each week. I hope that some of you have enjoyed the Digest... and that the rest of you felt no remorse in ignoring me.

Have a great weekend everyone.

This is Michael Tungsten Curtis, signing off.

How trashy are you?
Carry around your trash for the week of April 16th. Find out how resourceful you are and how much trash you generate. The goal: generate the least amount of trash as possible. Last year we gave over $100 in gift certificates as prizes - and we are always trying to improve ;) Sign up by e-mailing Christie Lee with a team of three people (or as an individual and I will create teams). Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to participate - 33 people did last year, so why not you? Win prizes, do something good for the earth, learn something about yourself, what more can you ask for? Rules and more information will be distributed to all who are interested.

An average American generates four pounds of solid trash each day (Annenberg Foundation) - you can do better!

The winners will be determined at the end of the Earth Day (April 22nd) activities planned by GO. More information about Earth Day will be forthcoming.
Not Getting Enough Sleep?
Have you ever heard of National Sleep Awareness Week?  Well, it just concluded for 2006; it was recognized from March 27th to April 2nd.  The National Sleep Foundation, based in Washington, DC has an excellent web site with lots of fun and interesting stuff, including:  quizzes (sleep myths, sleep IQ, etc.), assessments (such as insomnia assessment), a sleepiness diary, links to research and surveys, as well as the chance to sign up for a free weekly newsletter.  Check out their web site here: www.sleepfoundation.org.  Also, there is a company called Carpenter Co. Labs that commemorated National Sleep Better Night on April 1st.  While I do not claim to endorse the company and/or its products, their web site is filled with useful information, including:  sleep tips, links to research articles on sleep issues, a chat room, and the results of a sleep survey.  Click here to access their web site:  www.sleepbetter.org.  Perhaps you will gain some information that will help you get a better night's sleep!  Sweet Dreams!
Half-Price Tickets to Orpheus X
The American Repertory Theatre -- one of the top three theatres in the country, according to Time magazine -- invites all students to experience Orpheus X with 1/2 PRICE TICKETS for all performances.

Orpheus X is the latest collaboration between A.R.T. Artistic Director Robert Woodruff and composer/performer Rinde Eckert, who created the award-winning production Highway Ulysses in 2003. For this production, they team with acclaimed video artist Denise Marika, who has designed a video installation exclusively for Orpheus X. Inspired by the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus X is the story of Orpheus, a rock star who has locked himself in his recording studio, where he dreams of rescuing from the underworld the poet Eurydice, who was struck and killed by a cab in which he was riding. Eurydice, meanwhile, is welcomed to the afterlife by the Queen of the Dead, who offers her something she could never have in the world above.

Orpheus X features a rich musical score by Rinde Eckert, who mixes rock, jazz, and classic opera, performed by a four-piece band. The production, now playing through April 23 at Zero Arrow Theatre (Mass Ave & Arrow St, Cambridge), stars Rinde Eckert, Suzan Hanson, and John Kelly. To take advantage of this special offer, contact the box office at (617) 547-8300. For more information about Orpheus X and the American Repertory Theatre, visit www.amrep.org.
29 NSSE surveys needed from class of 06 and 09
The NSSE survey is an important measure for Olin--and we have done very well compared to other schools in the past.  We have also been top in the nation for student response rate in the past!  We'd like to maintain this!

We are still looking for 29 NSSE surveys from the class of 06 and 09.  So please…check your email for reminders from Ann Schaffner (one more should be coming out shortly), follow the link and complete the survey--thank you!

Teach Entrepreneurship in South Africa
Olin students interested in entrepreneurship and South Africa: There may be an opportunity to join a Babson group this summer. For the sixth year in a row, an opportunity to teach entrepreneurship is available to a team of Babson students through the “Winter School” at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Babson hopes to send up to eight Babson interns, from both the undergraduate and graduate programs, to work this summer in Stellenbosch, from mid-June to mid-July. Interested Olin students should contact Tom Sullivan, Director of Spiritual Life at Babson, (see attached details) directly. Deadline for applications is Monday, April 10.
Store-to-door storage
Store-to-door storage is working with Olin again to provide students with summer storage options. Store-to-door will bring storage containers to campus which you can rent by yourself or with a couple of friends (2-3 students usually rent one container). The containers are dropped off near the residence halls for convenience at the end of the school year and they are brought back to the residence halls in the fall.

Olin anticipates several new programs on campus this summer so student storage will be limited to storage areas in the residence halls. (i.e. don't plan on storage in the CC or AC this summer)

Seniors - Store-to-door also delivers storage containers to off-campus sites once they have been filled. Contact Store-to-door about specific rates and where you'd like your container dropped off.
