CORe Digest

February 24th 2006

Dear Friends,

It’s my favorite time of year. Candidates’ Weekends are great because they have the energy and enthusiasm of ITLAPD, but last a full half-day longer, and have the added bonus of giving us a glimpse of what Olin will be like in the future, and give us a chance to make a positive impact. What we do at Candidates’ Weekend is just as important as what the candidates do.

If you just walk around while the candidates are arriving, you can literally feel the energy as they come in. Let yourself get sucked in. Be enthusiastic about what you love about Olin—be forthcoming about what you hate. Help the candidates feel welcome to jump into the middle of the Olin Community for a day. Remember how you felt when you came for Candidates’ Weekend. Think about what made you choose Olin. If you remember the students you met, you’ll probably come to the conclusion that our participation contributes to the success of the weekend in a big way.

Think about it: in the short time of 4 days you have the chance to significantly shape Olin’s future – opportunities like that are few and far between. It’s worth it to get involved, and it’s certainly not too late—you don’t need a table at Olin Unplugged or an OVAL name badge to hang out with some cool new people for a couple hours. It just doesn’t get much better or more important than this.

For those of us who would rather receive the CW Schedule in something other than JPEG format (Emily, we still love you), I’ve transcribed the candidate schedule in all its iCal glory. See below.

Enjoy the weekend,

-Mike

The Tipping Point Selected for Summer Reading
Provost David Kerns has approved the recommendation of the Summer Book Program Advisory Committee to use Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Differenceas the book for summer reading. Thanks to Committee members: Rebecca Christianson, Rod Crafts, Alex Davis '08, Ozgur Eris, Sara Marshall '07, Roberto Santana '09, Kathleen Towers '09 and Nikolaus Wittenstein '09. And thanks to members of the Olin community who recommended 29 books for the Committee's consideration.

The Convocation on The Tipping Point will be held on Thursday, August 31, at 7 p.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium. Suggestions for speakers or panelists may be forwarded to Rod Crafts, Alex Davis, Ozgur Eris or Kathleen Towers.

Wellesley Pub Trivia Night!
Wellesley's Class of 07 is hosting a 90's Pub Trivia Night over at Punch's Alley (in their campus center) and Olin is explicitly invited!

The event is on Saturday, March 4th at 9:00 PM.

Trivia starts at 10:00, with the winning team receiving a round of free drinks! (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic)

It's open to everyone, although you have to be over 21 to drink.

There will also be a live band playing all of your favorite songs from the 90s. Oh and pizza and snacks.

And, as if all that wasn't enough incentive, because the Class of 07's class color is yellow, Mike's Hard Lemonade will be the drink of the evening with a special reduced price.

The legendary Grant Hutchins (of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fame) is even expected to make an appearance, so come on out and help show Wellesley a little Olin spirit!
Dare to Diva 2006 wants you!
Grab your cha-cha heels or your three-piece suit and get ready, because we're looking for performers for this spring's Olin-Babson drag show. That's right, you can be a part of Dare to Diva 2006! We're awarding $500 in prizes to the winning drag kings and queens, and who doesn't like prizes? That's right, nobody, so go ahead and email daretodiva@gmail.com by Monday, March 6 if you'd like to participate - this is non-binding.

Wondering exactly what this drag show thing is all about? Well, performers (of any gender) cross-dress and usually dance and lip-sync to a song of their choice. Feel free to put together your own unique act - the only rule is that you have to be in drag. So go ahead, express yourself, and dare to diva!

Dare to Diva 2006 is co-sponsored by Open and GLEE. Thanks to CORe, SGA, and SAC for funding this event. If you have any questions, contact daretodiva@gmail.com or come to Open's next general meeting, Sunday, February 26, 9:30 to 10:30 PM in CC317.
Private Tour of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis
Come chill with Brandeis students and enjoy their new contemporary art exhibits!
Brandeis has invited Olin Students to come visit the new exhibits at their Rose Art Museum. We are organizing a private exhibition (exclusively for Olin and Brandeis students) with the director of the art museum right after we return from Spring Break, on Tuesday, March 28th at 6:00 PM (leave some buffer-time for transportation). It is a great way to get off campus, see some cool art, and meet new people.

Since we will be serving refreshments, we would like to get a rough headcount, so please RSVP to Steve Krumholz with interest by March 17. Also, if you are willing to drive, please say so (and how many other people you can hold) in the RSVP.

For more information about the Rose Art Museum, refer to their website: http://www.brandeis.edu/rose/index.html

I am a junior at Babson College and I have recently started a web-based company called barshots.com (www.barshots.com). I need someone to help me with the design of the site, and more importantly someone with knowledge of javascript or php (preferably php) as to build advanced search features, interactive discussion boards, votings, polls, etc. The company is based on a fun and exciting atmosphere and a person who has an interest-in/knowledge-of bars is preferred. With regards to pay, either an hourly wage or salary will be established based on experience, or an equity stake in the business. We can discuss this in person when the time comes.
