CORe Digest
January 27th 2006
Dear Friends,
I’d like to express gratitude to the members of the Class of 2009. I had the pleasure of seeing some of you in your ICB studio class today, and it made me remember what it was like to be at Olin when it was still that new to me. You’re a lot like we were then, and in some ways I envy you—not for the reasons you always hear about having courses that have been taught before, but for the energy and undying optimism that so many of you possess. Qualities which, I’m sorry to say, we could use more of in the upper classes of Olin students. Our passion for life and for Olin should come from curiosity and a sense of fun, not driven by cynicism and frustration. I hope we can all remember how we used to be able to look on the bright side.
Now, many of you might be thinking: it’s easy for Mikecurtis to tell us to be optimistic as he sits, faceless and insolated in CORedigestland away from the harsh realities of life at Olin: scheduling our own worktime, living isolated suites in East Hall, getting paper cuts... for God’s sake, Dylan Sanders-Garrett was pronounced dead yesterday in SCOPE!
To that I say that I shall cast off the mask of Digest editorship and show my face to y’all for public scrutiny (Figure 1).
I’d also like to thank everyone who has given feedback on the CORe Digest, either in person, via email, or via the CORe Mid-year feedback survey. I take all the feedback seriously, and use it to make decisions about the format and content. I do my best to navigate conflicting advice for the Digest, and I hope everyone can enjoy what they like about it, and forgive the parts they don’t. Please keep it coming! There are still a whole mess of Digests left for me, and I want to know how to make things better.
As always, thanks for reading,
-Mike

LHS Science & Engineering Fair
Looking for judges
At this time of year the faculty and students of the Science Department at Lexington High School are making plans for our annual Science and Engineering Fair to be held Tuesday, March 7th from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lexington High School Field House located at 251 Waltham Street in Lexington.
The success of last year's Lexington High School Science and Engineering Fair, and those that preceded it, was due in large part to
the participation of the judges. It is through the participation of professionals like you that our young scientists have the opportunity
to display their research and interact with professionals in the
field.
We would be honored if you would serve on our judging committee. If you can serve as a judge at this year's fair, please contact me at the LHS science office. You can
reach the science office at (781) 861-2320 ext. 3050 during the school
day or by email
plyons@sch.ci.lexington.ma.us.

Sabbatical visitor at Olin
One more non-engineering faculty!
Please join me in welcoming Professor Ahyoung Kim to Olin. Professor Kim is visiting Babson and Olin during her sabbatical from Ewha Women's University in Seoul, Korea. Prof. Kim is an Educational Psychologist focusing on motivation and assessment. While at Olin, she will be finishing a number of books and projects, as well as embarking on a small research project that will hopefully involve some Olin students.
Of a more personal note, Professor Kim is Caryn Park's mother, and Mark Chang's mother in law, and will be staying with them in East Hall this semester. So, if you see her around, don't be alarmed :).
If you have any questions about her research into motivation and/or spatial ability, please
email Prof. Kim directly (
aykim@ewha.ac.kr), or
stop by Prof. Kim's office in OC361.
