Olin Team Finalists in Fed Challenge
On November 10, 2005 David Boy, Anita Kalra, Meenakshi Vembusubramanian, Kerin O'Toole, and Keoni Mahelona qualified as finalists in the Federal Reserve Challenge at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. The students were supported by Juliana Bernal-Ostos and advised by Prof. Brian Storey. The competition involved a presentation to the Fed about United States monetary policy and suggestions and predictions for the future of the economy. Teams were graded on presentation and quality of economic analysis. Students were honoured to represent Olin at the first ever college level Fed Challenge at Boston, and look forward to participating again next year.

Resident Scholar (Mark Chang) and Graduate School Advising
My role as Resident Scholar is to be an advisor at the intersection of academic and residential life. I have seen and met with a lot of students, but I wanted to make a special announcement to remind everyone, especially the Class of 2006, that I am available to anyone that has questions regarding graduate school.

While I can't answer all questions about all disciplines, I am happy to be a resource during this critical decision-making time. If you would like to discuss any sort of academic issues, now or in the future, please email me directly (mark.chang@olin.edu).

Employee and Student Identity Fraud Insurance
Olin College Risk Management is concerned about the financial security and personal well being of the Olin community. In association with Olin College’s membership in the Boston Consortium for Higher Education Risk Management Advisory Group, the college has purchased a limited identity fraud insurance policy for all students and employees. The insurance coverage reimburses identity theft victims for the following types of loss:

- Lost wages as a result of work absences to deal with the fraud, including wrongful incarceration – up to $500 per week for four weeks.

- Notary and certified mail charges for completing and delivering fraud affidavits.

- Fees to reapply for loans that were denied due to erroneous credit information created by the identity theft.

- Long distance telephone charges for calling merchants, law enforcement agencies or credit grantors to discuss the issues behind the identity theft.

- Attorney fees incurred, with the insurance company’s consent, to defend incorrectly filed legal actions, remove wrongly entered judgments and/or challenge credit report information.

The coverage provides each Olin College Student or Employee with a limit of liability for any one loss of up to $5,000 with no deductible. While we realize this doesn’t compensate people for all the costs or inconveniences resulting from such a loss, we chose to offer this benefit as a reasonable means to assist community members in times of trouble. If you have an identity theft incident you should phone the St. Paul Travelers Claims Department at 1-800-842-8496.

For additional assistance in submitting a claim or to ask questions about the program, please contact Ed Frackiewicz, Director Co-Sourced Risk Management by at Edward.Frackiewicz@olin.edu

NASA Robotics Internship Program
Last summer I worked at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland as part of the NASA Robotics Internship Program. It's a spiffy cool program with lots of opportunities for attending cool lectures and events at NASA, as well as trips to other centers like Johnson. They're looking for people who have finished their freshman and sophomore years as research assistants and for those finishing their junior and senior years as team leads. This year's programs are at Goddard and Ames. Application is now available at http://university.gsfc.nasa.gov/application -- give it a shot! They especially value people with previous robotics experience (like FIRST and similar programs) and with lots of teamwork experience (if you're reading this, you have more than most of the people I worked with last summer). Feel free to track me down with questions about the program if you've got them.

Greening Olin Speaker
Greening Olin is proud to bring Dr. Jennie Stephens, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Policy at Clark University, to Olin as a speaker. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. from Caltech in Environmental Science and Engineering and her B.A. from Harvard in Environmental Science and Public Policy.

She will be giving her talk from 6:30-7:30pm on Monday, Dec. 5th in the auditorium and eating dinner with students afterwards - if you would like to eat with her, let Christie Lee know (limited space).

Her talk is entitled "Policy Challenges for Deploying Climate Change Mitigation Technologies":

As the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary greenhouse gas contributing to climate change, continues to rise at a rapid rate due primarily to the burning of fossil fuels to satisfy growing energy demand, interest is growing in technologies that can produce energy without emitting CO2 to the atmosphere. In addition to improved energy efficiency measures and increased use of renewable energy, technologies that capture and store CO2 are increasingly considered potentially significant contributors to the energy infrastructure changes required to stabilize CO2 concentrations. This presentation will discuss the challenges of deploying these carbon management technologies. Although the technical feasibility of capturing and storing CO2 has been demonstrated, advancement of this set of technologies is constrained due to limited and inconsistent regulatory incentives. Interest and investment in CO2 capture and storage technologies from the private sector are growing rapidly, but government policies limiting CO2 emissions are needed to create incentives for early deployment of these technologies.
